Assessment Of Floating Vertical Raceways For The Culture Of Phase-Ii Hybrid Striped Bass, Eric T. Volkman, Christopher C. Kohler, Susan T. Kohler

Publications

A floating vertical raceway is a system designed to provide a constant, unidirectional flow of water to fish confined in a flexible raceway that is suspended vertically in the water column. This study evaluated the potential of floating vertical raceways for the culture of phase-II sunshine bass (female white bass Morone chrysops × male striped bass M. saxatilis) reared at two densities (125 and 188 fish/m3). Fish with a mean starting weight of 0.7 g were fed a diet containing 40% crude protein to satiation for 121 d. Fish in the low-density treatment reached a significantly higher …

Untangling Eligibility Requirements Under The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, Robert A. Garda Jr. Apr 2004

Untangling Eligibility Requirements Under The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, Robert A. Garda Jr.

Missouri Law Review

This Article attempts to untangle the web of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act eligibility standards in order to determine who is entitled to its extensive benefits. The overriding question addressed is whether children passing from grade to grade may still be IDEA eligible. When the Supreme Court stated famously in Board of Education of the Hendrick Hudson Central School District v. Rowley that not every child passing from grade to grade is receiving a free appropriate public education under IDEA, it necessarily recognized a class of children who were IDEA eligible despite passing marks. Identifying the characteristics of these children …

Magic, Mysticism, And Modern Medicine: The Influence Of Alchemy On Seventeenth-Century England, Lindsay Fitzharris '04 Apr 2004

Magic, Mysticism, And Modern Medicine: The Influence Of Alchemy On Seventeenth-Century England, Lindsay Fitzharris '04

Honors Projects, History

In 1947, historian George Sarton questioned the place of alchemy in the history of science. He was not unlike many historians, who even attacked scholars of the subject, characterizing them as "fabulous creatures" who "seem to be under the wrath of God themselves" and who "become tinctured with the kind of lunacy they set out to describe." For decades, critics fought hard to keep alchemy out of the history of science. Instead, the emphasis of the Scientific Revolution centered on the mathematical sciences, focusing mainly on the intellectual development from Copernicus to Newton and highlighting astronomy and the studies of …

Towards A Complex, Active, Human-Centered Subject Grounded In The Sociopolitical: A Symbiosis Of Edmund Husserl And Michael Foucalt, Kathryn E. Wehr '04

Honors Projects

This thesis responds to the questions "With the empirical, 'found' world prevalent as the paradigm for all valid knowledge, what happened to the relevance of the human in knowledge? Is there an alternative that does not divorce the knower from the knowing?" The ideas of Edmund Husserl (1859-1938) and Michel Foucault (1926-1984), two thinkers traditionally viewed as rivals in continental philosophy and social theory, animate these questions. Both philosophers critique the taken-for-granted aspects of the world: Husserl through the constituting subject and Foucault through the socially, linguistically, and historically constituted subject. Rather than an either-or that oversimplifies the subject, a …

Patterns Of Feline Immunodeficiency Virus Multiple Infection And Genome Divergence In A Free-Ranging Population Of African Lions, Jennifer L. Troyer, Jill Pecon-Slattery, Melody E. Roelke, Lori Black, Craig Packer, Stephen J. O'Brien Apr 2004

Patterns Of Feline Immunodeficiency Virus Multiple Infection And Genome Divergence In A Free-Ranging Population Of African Lions, Jennifer L. Troyer, Jill Pecon-Slattery, Melody E. Roelke, Lori Black, Craig Packer, Stephen J. O'Brien

Biology Faculty Articles

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a lentivirus that causes AIDS-like immunodeficiency disease in domestic cats. Free-ranging lions, Panthera leo, carry a chronic species-specific strain of FIV, FIV-Ple, which so far has not been convincingly connected with immune pathology or mortality. FIV-Ple, harboring the three distinct strains A, B, and C defined by pol gene sequence divergences, is endemic in the large outbred population of lions in the Serengeti ecosystem in Tanzania. Here we describe the pattern of variation in the three FIV genes gag, pol-RT, and pol-RNase among lions within 13 prides to assess the occurrence of FIV infection and …

Importance Of Outcrossing For Fruit Production In Slickspot Peppergrass, Lepidium Papilliferum L. (Brassicaceae), Ian Robertson Apr 2004

Importance Of Outcrossing For Fruit Production In Slickspot Peppergrass, Lepidium Papilliferum L. (Brassicaceae), Ian Robertson

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Plants with insect-mediated pollination are often assumed to be obligate outcrossers; i.e., pollen must be supplied from flowers of other individuals for pollination and subsequent fruit production. Indeed, many flowers with insect-mediated pollination exhibit incompatibility to their own pollen or have a separation in time between pollen production and maturation of the stigma on a given flower (Proctor et al. 1996). However, because the breeding systems of plants are diverse and include varying levels of outcrossing and selfing, experiments are required to determine whether pollination in a particular species occurs via outcrossing, self-pollination, or both. Here I report the results …

Prairie Wetlands Are Important For Carbon Storage, Jay Hestbeck Apr 2004

Prairie Wetlands Are Important For Carbon Storage, Jay Hestbeck

United States Geological Survey: Publications

USGS’s Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center and USDA’s Agricultural Research Service collaborated to study the potential of prairie pothole region wetlands to sequester carbon emitted into the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels. Results suggest that wetlands traditionally functioned as sinks for atmospheric carbon, but cultivation, the current principal land use, has shifted their function to be sources of atmospheric carbon. Data suggest that equal or greater amounts of atmospheric carbon can be stored in wetlands through restoration programs when compared with cropland, even though the acreage of wetlands is much smaller. These restored wetlands will also provide improved …

The International Criminal Court: A Sociological History, Dawn Rothe Apr 2004

The International Criminal Court: A Sociological History, Dawn Rothe

Masters Theses

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has been touted as a new international response to the worst atrocities of mankind: crimes against humanity, war crimes, and crimes of aggression. Indeed, the implementation of a permanent international court is a historical tum. However, the course to which an international criminal court transpired dates back to the late 1800's. One hundred years of political, economic, and social contradictions have aided and abated the process of what is now the International Criminal Court. However, the dialectics between actors and institutions has been neglected in historical and legal analysis. The purpose of this thesis is …

Negotiation As One Among Many Tools, Jennifer Gerarda Brown, Marcia Caton Campbell, Jayne Seminare Docherty, Nancy A. Welsh

Article Extract

Even as this symposium examines the "canon" of negotiation, we think it is also important to consider negotiation's context. In many cases, negotiation cannot be the first or the only activity that takes place. To make significant progress in the resolution or management of some conflicts, other activities will have to precede or supplement negotiation. This can be particularly true in large-scale, multi-party public disputes.

Consider the following situation, one that might be unfolding even as you read this in any number of places in the United States. The setting is the state of Grace, a relatively small …
