The Next Step In Scholarly Communication: Is The Traditional Journal Dead?, Jeanne Galvin Apr 2004

The Next Step In Scholarly Communication: Is The Traditional Journal Dead?, Jeanne Galvin

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Electronic journals have been applauded as a solution to the serials pricing crisis, a step toward environmentally responsible behavior and a means for scholars to expedite and expand their modes of communication. On the other hand, until fairly recently some scholars regarded electronic journals as ephemeral and inaccessible to all but the technologically proficient. As rising prices force libraries to cancel subscriptions each year and publication delays slow scholarly communication and academic careers, electronic journals seem to offer some promise. The article will review the recent advances made by electronic journals and the current challenges remaining for scholarly communication.

Review Of Texas Natural History: A Century Of Change By David J. Schmidly, Brian Barnette Apr 2004

Review Of Texas Natural History: A Century Of Change By David J. Schmidly, Brian Barnette

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

As the nineteenth century drew to a close, a team of naturalists ventured out across the state of Texas to capture, identify, and record as many species of wildlife as they could find. Under the direction of Vernon Bailey, they spent more than 2,100 days in Texas between 1889 and 1906 sampling each of the state's ten ecological regions. Their efforts were part of a nation-wide survey sponsored by the Department of Agriculture.

Bailey's 1905 summary of the team's findings, North American Fauna No. 25: Biological Survey of Texas, has served as a standard reference on Texas mammals for …

Simple, Pure, And True: An Emergent Vision Of Liberal Learning At The Research University, Peter Sederberg

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Epiphanies, presumably, strike suddenly. This vision, however, was not like Saul’s on the road to Damascus; rather, it emerged over 25 years of incremental involvement in creating one of the stronger Honors Colleges in the country at the University of South Carolina. Over the past five years, in particular, my evolutionary experience has been shaped by a growing recognition of an underlying problem confronting the contemporary research university.

In general, the demands faced by research universities have not changed since World War II, though some have fluctuated in intensity. The essential problem, I believe, arises less from external demands and …

Review Of North American Box Turtles: A Natural History By C. Kenneth Dodd, Jr., Lynette Sievert

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Box turtles, genus Terrapene, inhabit much of the eastern US and some of Mexico. Many herpetologists and naturalists can recount pleasant childhood memories of encounters with these docile reptiles. Offering a wealth of scientific information to satisfy the highly trained herpetologist, Ken Dodd has written a book about a turtle familiar to most of us sure to appeal to the beginner as well.

Fishes Of The Missouri National Recreational River, South Dakota And Nebraska, Charles Berry, Jr., Bradley Young Apr 2004

Fishes Of The Missouri National Recreational River, South Dakota And Nebraska, Charles Berry, Jr., Bradley Young

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Two sections of the Missouri River, one extending 94 km downstream from Gavins Point Dam, and the other extending 62 km downstream from Fort Randall Dam, are legally designated as National Recreational Rivers. An ichthyofaunal list and fish habitat data were needed for conservation planning by states and federal agencies (e.g., National Park Service). We collected fish during three summers from four macrohabitats, using five fish collection techniques, and measured fish habitat characteristics. Temperature, conductivity, and turbidity varied little, but substrate, depth, and velocity differed among macrohabitats (e.g., depth and velocity in the channel exceeded those elsewhere; sand dominated the …

"A Singular Position:" Women Professors And Women's Community, Florence A. Hamrick, Julie R. Nelson Apr 2004

"A Singular Position:" Women Professors And Women's Community, Florence A. Hamrick, Julie R. Nelson

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Twenty-six professors at a research intensive university participated in this study of senior women professors' career experiences and reflections. Themes surrounding community and collegiality with respect to disciplinary commitment, salience of gender to discipline, and the role of personal choices are identified and discussed. Resulting perspectives on "women's community" in academe are also developed. Respondents maintained close, long-standing supportive ties with women colleagues within their academic disciplines, particularly when women colleagues were scarce in their local departments. Respondents' principal affiliations were rooted in their disciplines, highlighting the influence of discipline in matters related to professional identity as well as community.

The Changing Face Of Higher Education: Why More Administrators Are Wearing Lipstick, Barbara R. Jones, Ronda O. Credille Apr 2004

The Changing Face Of Higher Education: Why More Administrators Are Wearing Lipstick, Barbara R. Jones, Ronda O. Credille

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

During the 150 years women have participated in higher education, they have made tremendous strides. At many post-secondary institutions, women were not accepted as students until the second half of the 20th century. In 2004, women serve in the upper echelons of power at some of the nation's oldest and most prestigious universities. This inquiry examines the history of women's participation in higher education, including their entry into leadership positions within the academy and the barriers and facilitators they experienced. The leadership models and the career development of women are also examined. The results of interviews with eight women administrators …

Double Excitations Within Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Linear Response, Neepa T. Maitra, Fan Zhang, Robert J. Cave, Kieron Burke Apr 2004

Double Excitations Within Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Linear Response, Neepa T. Maitra, Fan Zhang, Robert J. Cave, Kieron Burke

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Within the adiabatic approximation, time-dependent density functional theory yields only single excitations. Near states of double excitation character, the exact exchange–correlation kernel has a strong dependence on frequency. We derive the exact frequency-dependent kernel when a double excitation mixes with a single excitation, well separated from the other excitations, in the limit that the electron–electron interaction is weak. Building on this, we construct a nonempirical approximation for the general case, and illustrate our results on a simple model.

Real Time Digital Signal Processing Adaptive Filters For Correlated Noise Reduction In Ring Laser Gyro Inertial Systems, David A. Doheny Apr 2004

Real Time Digital Signal Processing Adaptive Filters For Correlated Noise Reduction In Ring Laser Gyro Inertial Systems, David A. Doheny

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Existing opportunities in advanced interceptor, satellite guidance and aircraft navigation technologies, requiring higher signal processing speeds and lower noise environments, are demanding Ring Laser Gyro (RLG) based Inertial Systems to reduce initialization and operational data latency as well as correlated noise magnitudes. Existing signal processing algorithms are often less than optimal when considering these requirements. Advancements in micro-electronic processes have made Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC) a fundamental building block for system implementation when considering higher-level signal processing algorithms.

Research of real time adaptive signal processing algorithms embedded in ASICs for use in RLG based inertial systems will help to …

Fabrication, Characterization, And Chemical Sensing Of Silicon Dioxide Microcantilevers, Yanjun Tang

Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this work is to design and fabricate an advanced silicon dioxide microcantilever sensor and to investigate chemical and biological sensing by microtechnology.

Microcantilever sensor technology has many advantages including fast response time, lower cost of fabrication, the possibility of sensor arrays with small overall dimensions, the ability to explore microenvironments, and improved portability for field applications. For all of these advantages, microcantilever chemical and biological sensors have drawn more and more attention.

So far, all other microcantilevers were designed and fabricated for AFM applications. We developed a novel SiO2 microcantilever especially for chemical and biological sensor applications. …

A Numerical Method To Solve The Two-Step Parabolic Heat Transport Equations In A Microsphere Subjected To An Ultrafast Laser Pulse, Ibrahima Khalil Fiman Kaba Apr 2004

A Numerical Method To Solve The Two-Step Parabolic Heat Transport Equations In A Microsphere Subjected To An Ultrafast Laser Pulse, Ibrahima Khalil Fiman Kaba

Doctoral Dissertations

Heat transport at the microscale is the subject of intense investigation due to the growing need to fabricate microstructures for applications in nanotechnology. The need to control the spread of the thermal process zone has led to the development of high power short-pulse lasers. During thermal processing, impurities may form in the material. An amplification of the thermal energy around the impurities may result in severe damage occurring or in the failure of the thermal process. A thorough analysis of the way the impurities dissipates the thermal energy is therefore necessary to minimize the potential damage and optimize the thermal …

Self -Esteem And Sense Of Entitlement In Violent And Nonviolent Criminal Behavior, Susan Frank Apr 2004

Self -Esteem And Sense Of Entitlement In Violent And Nonviolent Criminal Behavior, Susan Frank

Doctoral Dissertations

There are two conflicting theories concerning self-esteem in violent and nonviolent criminal behavior. One theory proposes that low self-esteem is more influential than high self-esteem in an individual's decision to participate in criminal behavior, whereas the other theory proposes the opposite. Limited research is available concerning the role that sense of entitlement has in criminal behavior, beyond its previously explored role in rape. The first purpose of this study was to clarify the role of self-esteem in criminal behavior by having individuals currently incarcerated for both violent and nonviolent crimes complete the Self-Esteem Rating Scale. Using the scores obtained on …

Balancing The Demands Of The Workplace With The Needs Of The Modern Family: Expanding Family And Medical Leave To Protect Domestic Partners, Kimberly Menashe Glassman Apr 2004

Balancing The Demands Of The Workplace With The Needs Of The Modern Family: Expanding Family And Medical Leave To Protect Domestic Partners, Kimberly Menashe Glassman

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Note addresses the importance of expanding the federal Family and Medical Leave Act and state family and medical leave laws to protect domestic partners. Congress passed the Family and Medical Leave Act to allow workers to balance their work lives and family lives by granting workers the right to take leave time to care for an immediate family member in times of medical necessity. The term 'family member," however, is generally limited to relation y blood, adoption, or marriage, and does not include an individual's domestic partner. The concept of family has evolved in our legal system and is …

When Nice Guys Finish First: The Evolution Of Cooperation, The Study Of Law, And The Ordering Of Legal Regimes, Neel P. Parekh Apr 2004

When Nice Guys Finish First: The Evolution Of Cooperation, The Study Of Law, And The Ordering Of Legal Regimes, Neel P. Parekh

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Note adds to the scholarship in the area of Evolutionary Analysis and the Law (EA). EA is a paradigm that comments on the implications of evolution on the law. EA recognizes that many complex human behaviors that the law seeks to regulate have evolutionary origins that remain relevant today. This Note details how an understanding of the evolutionary basis of cooperation can bring about favorable revisions and reforms in the law.

Following a review of the scientific foundation of EA, this Note sets forth the proposition that humans have an evolutionarily developed tendency to cooperate, an idea that contrasts …

Cross-Cultural Considerations In Counseling Clients Of Samoan Heritage, Brian S. Canfield, J. Ty Cunningham Apr 2004

Cross-Cultural Considerations In Counseling Clients Of Samoan Heritage, Brian S. Canfield, J. Ty Cunningham

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

The Samoan islands have been politically, economically, and culturally influenced by the United States and Western European nations for more than one hundred and fifty years. Divided into two political regions, American Samoa is a protectorate of the United States and Western Samoa is an independent nation. Due to its political status and more direct influence from the United States, American Samoa is, in many aspects, a more modernized region compared to its neighbor Western Samoa. In the past half century, many Samoans have migrated to Hawaii and the west coast of the United States, including a significant population to …
