Sensing Of Aqueous Phosphates By Polymers With Dual Modes Of Signal Transduction, Dmitry Aldakov, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.
Sensing Of Aqueous Phosphates By Polymers With Dual Modes Of Signal Transduction, Dmitry Aldakov, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.
Chemistry Faculty Publications
A new approach to sensing of aqueous phosphate-related anions based on chromogenic conductive polymers is demonstrated. This method utilizes synergy between low-level p-doping in a polythiophene polymer and hydrogen bonding to increase anion-sensor affinity. These chromogenic conductive polymers show anion-specific changes both in color and in conductivity upon increasing concentration of anions, thus providing two independent modes of signal transduction.

Coastal Wetland Subsidence Arising From Local Hydrologic Manipulations, R. Eugene Turner
Coastal Wetland Subsidence Arising From Local Hydrologic Manipulations, R. Eugene Turner
Faculty Publications
Twenty-three estimates of soil subsidence rates arising under the influence of local hydrologic changes from flap-gates, weirs, dikes, and culverts in tidal wetlands were compared to 75 examples of subsidence in drained agricultural wetlands. The induced subsidence rates from these hydrologic modifications in tidal wetlands can continue for more than 100 years, and range between 1.67 to 0.10 cm yr−1 within 1 to 155 years after the hydrologic modifications commence. These subsidence rates are lower than in freshwater wetlands drained for agricultural purposes, decline with age, and are significant in comparison to the rates of global sea level rise or …

On Protecting Children—From Censorship: A Reply To Amitai Etzioni, Marjorie Heins
On Protecting Children—From Censorship: A Reply To Amitai Etzioni, Marjorie Heins
Chicago-Kent Law Review
Etzioni's argument for censorship of minors ignores the fundamental problem with Internet filters, misstates the results of media-effects research, and uses emotional terms like "protection" and "harm" to mask moral judgments about what is appropriate for youth.
Given the size and constantly changing character of the Internet, filters necessarily rely on key words and phrases. As a result, thousands of valuable Web pages are mistakenly blocked by filters, even at their narrowest settings. The problem is inherent in the system.
Most media-effects studies do not show a causal link between violent content and violent (or "aggressive") behavior. The studies that …

Is Fifra Enough Regulation? Failure To Obtain A Npdes Permit For Pesticide Applications May Violate The Clean Water Act, Rebecca E. Leintz
Chicago-Kent Law Review
In the summer of 1999, West Nile Virus, a mosquito-borne illness, appeared in the eastern United States and has since worked its way across the country. Thousands have been infected, and hundreds have died from the virus. Communities, struggling to protect their residents, have often been forced to employ widespread pesticide spraying to stop the virus' spread. Citizens and environmental groups, however, have expressed concern that pesticide spraying is damaging to the environment and contend that the law has been broken. They argue that when these pesticides are deposited onto water bodies, without first obtaining a permit, there is a …

The Distribution Of Fox Squirrel (Sciurus Niger) Leaf Nests Within Forest Fragments In Central Indiana, Carmen M. Salsbury, Rebecca W. Dolan, Emily B. Pentzer
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
We examined the abundance and placement of leaf nests by fox squirrels in six urban woodlots in central Indiana ranging in size from 1.06 to 8.28 ha. Four of the woodlots were disturbed, or subject to extensive human impact, whereas the remaining two were nature preserves. We counted all leaf nests present in each woodlot and recorded nest tree characteristics. We then conducted a quantitative vegetation analysis of trees present and estimated percentages of herbaceous and shrub cover along a minimum of two 100 m transects at each site. Fox squirrels showed a preference to build nests in certain species …

Bayesian Approaches For The Analysis Of Population Genetic Structure: An Example From Platanthera Leucophae (Orchidaceae), Kent E. Holsinger, Lisa E. Wallace
EEB Articles
We describe four extensions to existing Bayesian methods for the analysis of genetic structure in populations: (i) use of beta distributions to approximate the posterior distribution of f and θB; (ii) use of an entropy statistic to describe the amount of information about a parameter derived from the data; (iii) use of the Deviance Information Criterion (DIC) as a model choice criterion for determining whether there is evidence for inbreeding within populations or genetic differentiation among populations; and (iv) use of samples from the posterior distributions for f and θB derived from different data sets to determine whether the estimates …
Ultimate Strength Prediction In Fiberglass/Epoxy Beams Subjected To Three-Point Bending Using Acoustic Emission And Neural Networks, Michele D. Dorfinan
Ultimate Strength Prediction In Fiberglass/Epoxy Beams Subjected To Three-Point Bending Using Acoustic Emission And Neural Networks, Michele D. Dorfinan
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
The research presented herein demonstrates the feasibility of predicting ultimate strengths in composite beams subjected to 3-point bending using a neural network analysis of acoustic emission (AE) amplitude distribution data. Fifteen unidirectional fiberglass/epoxy beams were loaded to failure in a 3-point bend test fixture in an MTS load frame. Acoustic emission data were recorded from the onset of loading until failure. After acquisition, the acoustic emission data were filtered to include only data acquired up to 80 percent of the average ultimate load.
A backpropagation neural network was constructed to predict the ultimate failure load using these AE amplitude distribution …

Are Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurses A Solution To Rural Mental Health Workforce Shortages?, David Hartley Phd, Mha, Valerie Hart Phd, Msn, Nancy P. Hanrahan Phd, Rn, Stephenie L. Loux Ms
Mental Health / Substance Use Disorders
Advanced practice nurses specializing in mental health are typically referred to as advanced practice psychiatric nurses (APPNs). Clinical outcomes for these professionals have been found to be of high quality, as indicated by skill in diagnosis and treatment of mental illness (Merwin & Mauck, 1995). With an established scope of practice, including prescribing privileges, and with increasing numbers of APPNs seeking independent practice settings, it would appear that these mental health professionals may be an ideal mental health generalist for rural areas. This paper presents data on the geographic distribution of APPNs, and investigates the content of their training curriculum …
The Speech-Enhancing Effect Of Internet Regulation, Emily Buss
The Speech-Enhancing Effect Of Internet Regulation, Emily Buss
Chicago-Kent Law Review
In this Article, the author suggests that certain speech-reducing regulations will, in fact, be speech-enhancing for children. This is because children are vulnerable to far greater censorship at the hands of their parents than at the hands of Internet regulators. Regulations that inspire parents to relax their grip on their children's access to information are likely to produce significant net speech gains for children. Viewed this way, regulations designed to protect children can be conceived as pitting the speech interests of adults against the speech interests of children. The Article suggests a number of reasons we might value the children's …

Engaging County Educators In Science Education Reform: The New York 4-H Environmental Inquiry Program, Timothy Depriest, Marianne Krasny
Journal of Extension
We attempted to engage 4-H educators in facilitating science research experiences for youth. Through interviews and surveys of county educators and on-site observations, we determined that although nearly all educators implemented youth research projects, they faced challenges related to their own and their partner educators' lack of research experience and to fitting research projects into ongoing school curricula and county Extension programs. Future efforts might consider providing short research experiences for county educators and teachers to better enable them to facilitate research experiences for youth and thus to help schools meet inquiry-based science education standards.

Factors Influencing Seagrass Recovery In Feather Sound, Tampa Bay, Florida, Feather Sound Seagrass Recovery Workgroup
Factors Influencing Seagrass Recovery In Feather Sound, Tampa Bay, Florida, Feather Sound Seagrass Recovery Workgroup
Reports
This document is a summary of the findings and recommendations of the Feather Sound Seagrass Recovery Workgroup.
In response to nutrient load reductions and resulting clearer water, seagrasses have expanded significantly in many areas of Tampa Bay since the mid-1980s. However, the recovery rate and expansion of seagrasses in several areas, especially in the Feather Sound region of Old Tampa Bay, have been much slower. This project was designed to examine factors that may be affecting seagrass recovery and growth in the Feather Sound region compared to three other areas of Old Tampa Bay.
