Symbolic Regression Of Thermo-Physical Model Using Genetic Programming, Ying Zhang Apr 2004

Symbolic Regression Of Thermo-Physical Model Using Genetic Programming, Ying Zhang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The symbolic regression problem is to find a function, in symbolic form, that fits a given data set. Symbolic regression provides a means for function identification. This research describes an adaptive hybrid system for symbolic function identification of thermo-physical model that combines the genetic programming and a modified Marquardt nonlinear regression algorithm.

Genetic Programming (GP) system can extract knowledge from the data in the form of symbolic expressions, i.e. a tree structure, that are used to model and derive equation of state, mixing rules and phase behavior from the experimental data (properties estimation).

During the automatic evolution process of GP, …

Measurement Of The Anticancer Agent Gemcitabine And Its Deaminated Metabolite At Low Concentrations In Human Plasma By Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Yan Xu, Bruce Keith, Jean L. Grem Apr 2004

Measurement Of The Anticancer Agent Gemcitabine And Its Deaminated Metabolite At Low Concentrations In Human Plasma By Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Yan Xu, Bruce Keith, Jean L. Grem

Chemistry Faculty Publications

A liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method has been developed and validated for the determination of the anticancer agent gemcitabine (dFdC) and its metabolite 2′,2′-difluoro-2′-deoxyuridine (dFdU) in human plasma. An Oasis® HLB solid phase extraction cartridge was used for plasma sample preparation. Separation of the analytes was achieved with a YMC ODS-AQ (5 μm, 120 Å, mm) column. The initial composition of the mobile phase was 2% methanol/98% 5 mM ammonium acetate at pH 6.8 (v/v), and the flow rate was 0.2 ml/min. An isocratic gradient was used for 3 min, followed by a linear gradient over 4 min to 30% …

Bioterrorisrn Preparedness Of Rural Hospitals Compared To Urban Hospitals In Minnesota, Lee G. Schotzko Apr 2004

Bioterrorisrn Preparedness Of Rural Hospitals Compared To Urban Hospitals In Minnesota, Lee G. Schotzko

Theses and Graduate Projects

Bioterrorisrn has been a threat to many cultures around the world for centuries. The first record of their use dates back to 184 B.C. in a battle between Hannibal and King Eumenes of Peranum. Within the past five years, the concern over biological weapons and bioterrorism has greatly increased in the United States because of worldwide political dynamics. Is the United States prepared for a bioterrorism attack? Is Minnesota prepared for an attack? These are important questions, and many experts have not agreed upon the answers. Currently there is no industry standard for hospitals in regards to bioterrorisrn preparedness. Utilizing …

Motivation For Medicine: What Factors Influence Men And Women To Enter Physician Assistant School Versus Medical School?, Ross Golla

Theses and Graduate Projects

Background The purpose of this study was to distinguish what factors were most significant in medical and physician assistant student's decision to enter medicine, in addition to comparing male and female student's motivation. Methods A survey consisting of potential motives or deterrents for entering medicine was given to medical and PA students. Results were analyzed using an independent T-test. Results PA students reported greater significance on the duration of academic and clinical training, the ability to balance work and family, the opportunity to achieve a high income, dealing with malpractice allegations and the need to be on-call as motives for …

Educational Choices Of Undergraduate Women In Public Relations: A Quantitative Study, Moira K. Davis Apr 2004

Educational Choices Of Undergraduate Women In Public Relations: A Quantitative Study, Moira K. Davis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Public relations is one of the fastest growing majors chosen by college students throughout the United States, and most of these students are women. This thesis attempts to define the important role that women play in the practice of public relations and to determine why female students choose this major as their desired field of study more often then men. There is a need for such a study because in 1996 women accounted for only 37 percent of managers in marketing, advertising, and public relations, although they comprised 62 percent of all public relations specialists in this country. This research …

The Effects Of Seasonal Change On Copepods And Euphausiids Off The Western Antarctic Peninsula: Results From Biochemical Assays And Respiration Studies, Joël Laurent Bellucci Apr 2004

The Effects Of Seasonal Change On Copepods And Euphausiids Off The Western Antarctic Peninsula: Results From Biochemical Assays And Respiration Studies, Joël Laurent Bellucci

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

We compared four metabolic indicators of nutritional state: citrate synthase activity (CS), malate dehydrogenase activity (MDH), lactate dehydrogenase activity (LDH) and percent body protein to each other and to respiration measurements. These comparisons were made for four species of copepods (Calanoides acutus, Metridia gerlachei, Paraeuchaeta antarctica and another form of Paraeuchaeta that was unidentifiable to species due to its early life stage), three species of Euphausids (Euphausia crystallorophias, Euphausia triacantha, Euphausia superba (including both F6-furcilial and adult stages)) and Thysonessa macrura which were collected off the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) during Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. …

Structural Diversity In Metal-Organic Nanoscale Supramolecular Architectures, Heba Abourahma Apr 2004

Structural Diversity In Metal-Organic Nanoscale Supramolecular Architectures, Heba Abourahma

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Supramolecular synthesis has gained much attention in recent years. Such an approach to synthesis represents an attractive alternative to traditional, multi-step synthesis, especially for making complex, nanoscopic structures. Of particular interest, in the context of this work, is the use of metal-organic interactions to direct the self-assembly of nanoscopic architectures. These interactions are highly directional, relatively "strong" (compared to other supramolecular interactions) and kinetically labile, which allows for "self-correction" and in turn the production, often in high yield, of defect-free products. This also means that a number of related, yet structurally diverse products (supramolecular isomers) could be isolated.

The work …
