Reproductive Activity And Distrubution Of Bats In Nebraska, Russell A. Benedict Apr 2004

Reproductive Activity And Distrubution Of Bats In Nebraska, Russell A. Benedict

Western North American Naturalist

New geographic, reproductive, and seasonal records are presented for 11 of 13 bats inhabiting Nebraska. New geographic records are presented for 10 species, most notably Myotis lucifugus (120 miles west of nearest known record), M. septentrionalis (42 miles west of nearest record), Nycticeius humeralis (72 miles west of nearest record), and Pipistrellus subflavus (258 miles northwest of nearest record). New reproductive localities are recorded for 9 species, particularly the 1st records of breeding by Pipistrellus subflavus in Nebraska (Cherry and Dixon Counties) and the 2nd record of breeding by Lasionycteris noctivagans in Nebraska (Lancaster County). New records of timing of …

Immobilization Of Fission Iodine By Reaction With A Fullerene Containing Carbon Compound And Insoluble Natural Organic Matrix, Spencer M. Steinberg Apr 2004

Immobilization Of Fission Iodine By Reaction With A Fullerene Containing Carbon Compound And Insoluble Natural Organic Matrix, Spencer M. Steinberg

Separations Campaign (TRP)

The recovery of iodine released during the processing of used nuclear fuel poses a significant challenge to the transmutation of radioactive iodine. During the first two years of this program the use of Fullerene Containing Carbon (FCC) compounds and Natural Organic Matter (NOM) as potential sorbents for iodine release from the reprocessing of nuclear fuel was examined. This work also included the development of bench-scale testing capabilities at UNLV to allow the testing of the FCC and NOM materials in a simulated process off-gas environment. In the final year of the project we will complete studies of FCC and NOM …

Temperature And High Salinity Effects In Germinating Dimorphic Seeds Of Atriplex Rosea, M. Ajmal Khan, Bilquees Gul, Darrell J. Weber Apr 2004

Temperature And High Salinity Effects In Germinating Dimorphic Seeds Of Atriplex Rosea, M. Ajmal Khan, Bilquees Gul, Darrell J. Weber

Western North American Naturalist

Atriplex rosea L. (Chenopodiaceae; tumbling orach), an annual herb, is a widely established weedy species of disturbed sites in all counties of Utah. Seeds of Atriplex rosea were collected from a salt marsh in Faust, Utah, and are dimorphic, light brown, and 2–2.5 mm wide, or black and 1–2 mm wide. Seed germination responses of the black and brown seeds were studied over a range of salinity and temperature. Both brown and black seeds germinated at 1000 mM NaCl, and the optimal temperature for germination of both types was 20–30 °C. Variation in temperature, however, affected germination of black seeds …

A Conserved Aspartate (Asp-1393) Regulates Nadph Reduction Of Neuronal Nitric-Oxide Synthase: Implications For Catalysis, Koustubh Panda, Subrata Adak, David Konas, Manisha Sharma, Dennis J. Stuehr Apr 2004

A Conserved Aspartate (Asp-1393) Regulates Nadph Reduction Of Neuronal Nitric-Oxide Synthase: Implications For Catalysis, Koustubh Panda, Subrata Adak, David Konas, Manisha Sharma, Dennis J. Stuehr

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Nitric-oxide synthases (NOSs) are flavo-heme enzymes whose electron transfer reactions are controlled by calmodulin (CaM). The NOS flavoprotein domain includes a ferredoxin-NADP+ reductase (FNR)-like module that contains NADPH- and FAD-binding sites. FNR-like modules in related flavoproteins have three conserved residues that regulate electron transfer between bound NAD(P)H and FAD. To investigate the function of one of these residues in neuronal NOS (nNOS), we generated and characterized mutants that had Val, Glu, or Asn substituted for the conserved Asp-1393. All three mutants exhibited normal composition, spectral properties, and binding of cofactors, substrates, and CaM. All had slower NADPH-dependent cytochrome c and …

Cultural Competence In Physician Assistants And Their Associated Characteristics, Leann Aldape Burgher Apr 2004

Cultural Competence In Physician Assistants And Their Associated Characteristics, Leann Aldape Burgher

Theses and Graduate Projects

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Cultural diversity continues to expand within the United States- People of diverse cultural backgrounds have diverse expectations about the healthcare they should receive. When expectations of healthcare providers and patients conflict, quality of care, patient outcomes, ind the healthcare economy suffer. Consequently, the need for culturally competent healthcare has risen to the attention of healthcare professionals. Physician assistants (PAs) have acknowledged the need to provide culturally competent care. This study aimed to determine the level of cultural competence in PAs and identify characteristics of PAs that are associated with cultural competence. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Culrural competence was measured …

Crystal Engineering Of Metal-Carboxylate Based Coordination Polymers, Jianjiang Lu Apr 2004

Crystal Engineering Of Metal-Carboxylate Based Coordination Polymers, Jianjiang Lu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation endeavors to delineate practical paradigms for crystal engineering based upon the understanding of supramolecular chemistry and self-assembly, i.e. the design and synthesis of novel functional crystalline materials.

Two basic metal-organic building units, Zn(RCO2)2(py)2 and (L2)M2(RCO2)4 (M = Zn, Cu), as well as nano-scaled secondary building units (nSBUs) that are constructed from Cu2(RCO2)4 are researched and discussed. Design strategies have been developed to propagate these metal-organic synthons into predictable coordination polymer networks. A series of crystal structures, as well as their syntheses …

Paper Session I-B - Mass Spectrometer-Based Hazardous Gas Detection For Aerospace Applications, C Richard Arkin

Space Congress® Proceedings

The Hazardous Gas Detection Lab at Kennedy Space Center has a history of developing mass spectrometer-based instrumentation for the detection and quantification of the cryogenic fuels used by Shuttle and hazardous gases in general. Presented is a talk focusing on the past, present and future of the lab. In the past, the lab had designed, developed and manufactured very specific gas analysis instruments for Shuttle processing. More recently, the lab has been involved in pushing the limits of mass spectrometer-based gas analysis instruments by making smaller, more robust systems. The experienced gained will allow the lab to develop more advanced …
