This report contains 30 crop and livestock research and demonstration summaries of projects conducted at Southeast Research Farm in 2004. This year’s cattle report describes a project that compares feeding dried distillers grains to other oilseed supplements for wintering cows on ground corn stalks. Our crop reports show results of the many weed control projects that were conducted here as well as variety trial results and breeder evaluations for oat, corn, soybean, and forages. Several soil fertility research projects focused on strip/zone till, amending soils with gypsum, nutrient management associated with livestock manure, fertilizer placement, and other topics. OBJECTIVE: Inactivation of p53 and p16 tumor suppressor genes, and apoptosis which is crucial in carcinogenesis have commonly been studied in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). However, their prognostic value has not yet been clearly established. METHODS: This study was conducted in the Department of Oral Pathology, Faculty of Dentistry, Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey during the period 2002 to 2003 on formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissue specimens of 12 lip and 18 intraoral primary squamous cell carcinoma cases. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to investigate the morbidity pattern of malaria during pregnancy in New Halfa Teaching Hospital, Eastern Sudan, where malaria transmission is unstable. METHODS: Pregnant (or in the puerperium) women presented with symptoms of falciparum malaria to the hospital during the period of November 2002 to March 2003 were enrolled to the study. Their socio-demographic characters, physical examinations, especially manifestations of severe falciparum malaria were performed and data were recorded. Blood films for malaria, urine, hemoglobin and blood glucose were tested. RESULTS: Fifty-nine pregnant (or in the puerperium) women with falciparum malaria were presented in this study. …

OBJECTIVE: Recently, several studies have indicated the rate of consanguinity ranging between 20 and 70% in the Middle East. Turkey is one of the countries with a high rate of consanguineous unions in the Middle East. In this study, the rate of consanguinity and its effects on spontaneous abortus, stillbirth, infant mortality, and birth defects were investigated in a population sample residing in Kahramanmaras city, Turkey. For various reasons, a dedicated cluster is not always fully utilized even when all of its processors are allocated to jobs. This occurs any time that a running job does not use 100% of each of the processors allocated to it. Keeping in mind the needs of both the cluster’s system administrators and its users, we would like to increase the throughput and efficiency of the cluster while maintaining or improving the average turnaround time of the jobs and the quality of service of the “primary” jobs originally scheduled on the cluster. A survey of abomasal parasites in cervids from Central Spain was conducted at three sites, Quintos de Mora (Toledo), Maluéñez de Arriba (Cáceres), and La Herguijuela (Cáceres). Commonly occurring helminths belonged to three polymorphic species of the Ostertagiinae: Spiculopteragia asymmetrica/S. quadrispiculata, Ostertagia leptospicularis/O. kolchida, and O. drozdzi/O. ryjikovi. Trichostrongylus axei was found in very few cases. Ostertagia drozdzi/O. ryjikovi and the minor male morphotype, S. quadrispiculata, are reported for the first time in red deer from Spain. Titanium and its alloys have been used extensively in orthopedic implants mainly because of its excellent biocompatibility. This biocompatibility is attributed to its surface oxide film (3-7 nm thickness) that forms immediately upon exposure of titanium to air. In the research, the oxidation of Ti-6Al-4V in alpha-calf serum solution was studied. Four different immersion times were tested. Characterization of surface topography and its chemical composition was examined using Atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform-infrared radiation (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Quartz Crystal Microbalances (QCMs) have been widely used for detection of various chemical and biological species in liquid media. In this work an improved binding of Protein A and IgG molecules on QCM biosensors by modifying the gold surface of the quartz crystal with an ultra thin polystyrene film followed by an acidic treatment has been reported. Protein A and IgG immobilizations on quartz crystals with the polystyrene film represented a 65% increase and a 40% increase respectively when compared to immobilization done directly onto the crystals. This paper reports an experimental study of the elastic deformation of a 200 μm thick microfabricated square membrane with sides ranging from 8.5 mm to 15 mm as indented by a fine cylindrical, flat-ended punch with diameter 500 μm in the presence of long-range intersurface forces. an apparatus was constructed to allow simultaneously measurements of the indenter displacement and the applied force. a number of interesting phenomena such as the "jump-into-contact" and the "pull-off" between the membrane and the moving cylinder were observed. a simple theoretical analysis using linear elasticity was adopted to fit the load-displacement curve (compliance) and thus …

Of the domestic relations appellate cases decided during this survey period, twenty-three are discussed below. Georgia law requires that appeals of domestic relations cases occur through the discretionary application process. A party wanting to appeal an order in a domestic relations case must first file an application to obtain the permission of the appropriate appellate court to file an appeal. As part of a pilot project, the Georgia Supreme Court began accepting all "non-frivolous" applications filed in domestic relations cases during the 2003 calendar year. The supreme court extended the pilot project for the 2004 calendar year; however, the supreme …

Current surface sampling methods for microbial contaminants are designed to sample small areas and utilize culture analysis. The total number of microbes recovered is low because a small area is sampled, making detection of a potential pathogen more difficult. Furthermore, sampling of small areas requires a greater number of samples to be collected, which delays the reporting of results, taxes laboratory resources and staffing, and increases analysis costs. This study of African-American consumers living in a large racially segregated midwestern city adds to extant theory on ideology in consumer behavior by considering the role of normative political ideology in provisioning. The specific roles of traditional black liberal and black nationalist political ideologies are discussed. We conclude that normative political ideology is central to understanding shopping as an expression of social and political relations between households confronting attenuated access to goods and services, ranging from housing to food, in a setting stratified by gender, race, and class. Notes of a White Black Woman by Judy Scales-Trent (1995) was the text used for this analysis and offered insight to the process of identity development, and the co-cultural communication practices of an African American woman whom others mistake as European American-a 'White Black Woman.' The basis for this body of research was embedded in the premise that co-cultural communication practices are intrinsically linked to the normal communication of the White Black person's identity development negotiation process.
