Twentieth Century Water Quality Trends In Minnesota Lakes Compared With Presettlement Variability, Joy M. Ramstack, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Daniel R. Engstrom
Twentieth Century Water Quality Trends In Minnesota Lakes Compared With Presettlement Variability, Joy M. Ramstack, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Daniel R. Engstrom
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Abstract: A diatom-based transfer function was used to reconstruct water chemistry before European settlement in 55 Minnesota lakes. The lakes span three natural ecoregions, which differ in their history of land use, as well as in surficial geology, climate, and vegetation. Postsettlement trends were compared with water chemistry change reconstructed from two presettlement core sections (circa 1750 and 1800) as a measure of natural variability. Presettlement water quality changes were generally small and nondirectional in all three ecoregions. In contrast, half of the urban lakes showed a statistically significant increase in chloride, whereas 30% of urban and 30% of agricultural …

Assessing The Efficacy Of Registered Underground Baiting Products For Mountain Beaver (Aplodontia Rufa) Control , Wendy M. Arjo, Dale L. Nolte
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The mountain beaver (Aplodontia rufa) is a fossorialrodent species endemic to the Pacific Northwest and portions of California. This herbivore inflicts millions of dollars of damage annually to forest seedling plantations. Currently, extensive trapping prior to planting is the most reliable method for reducing damage. With increasing restrictions placed on trapping, forest resource managers need alternative tools to minimize forest damage. This study assessed the potential of four toxicants registered for underground use to controlmountain beaver; zinc phosphide, diphacinone, chlorophacinone, and strychnine. Zinc phosphide and strychnine are acute toxicants, whereas diphacinone and chlorophacinone are anticoagulants. Anticoagulants prevent the recycling of …

Effects Of Size And Exposure To Predation Threat On Mating Behavior And Predation Response In Male Western Mosquitofish (Gambusia Affinis), Alison Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
Trade offs between mating and predator avoidance advantages were studied in the western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis: Poeciliidae). When tested with green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) predators, larger male G. affinis were found to have a higher number of escapes compared to smaller males. Smaller males were captured more often than larger males in groups of six and in both complex and simple habitat types. Large males, on average, were found to attempt more matings and spend a larger proportion of time near the female than smaller males. When trials with predators were compared to trials without predators, large males decreased mating …
The Perfect Angel Hypothesis: The Effect Of Parents' False Perceptions On Children's Adjustment, Sonya Myers
The Perfect Angel Hypothesis: The Effect Of Parents' False Perceptions On Children's Adjustment, Sonya Myers
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This study explored the effects of parental false perceptions of their children's temperament on their subsequent school behavior problems. Participants were parents and teachers of 97 kindergarten children in an urban southern community. Both parents and teachers completed questionnaires on children's temperament, while teachers reported on children's school behaviors. Results indicate that both parent and teacher report of child temperament is related to school behavior problems, however, when parental ratings are more favorable than teacher ratings, this favorability is related to more internalizing and externalizing behaviors in school. In addition, parents rated their children higher on negative emotions, while parents …
Water Quality Study And Plume Behavior Modeling For Lake Pontchartrain At The Mouth Of The Tchefuncte River, Jeimmy C. Leal Castellano
Water Quality Study And Plume Behavior Modeling For Lake Pontchartrain At The Mouth Of The Tchefuncte River, Jeimmy C. Leal Castellano
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Over the last several decades, the Lake Pontchartrain Basin has been impacted by the presence of high levels of Fecal Coliform bacteria following periods of rainfall. This is a potential problem for recreational uses of the area. In 2003 a field sampling study was initiated in the north shore area of the Lake at the mouth of the Tchefuncte River. The objectives were to determine the water quality in the area and to simulate the plume patterns from the Tchefuncte River. Twenty eight stations at the mouth of the Tchefuncte River, and a station at the Madisonville Bridge were selected …
A Numerical Method For Computing Radially Symmetric Solutions Of A Dissipative Nonlinear Modified Klein-Gordon Equation, Jorge Macias Diaz
A Numerical Method For Computing Radially Symmetric Solutions Of A Dissipative Nonlinear Modified Klein-Gordon Equation, Jorge Macias Diaz
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In this paper we develop a finite-difference scheme to approximate radially symmetric solutions of a dissipative nonlinear modified Klein-Gordon equation in an open sphere around the origin, with constant internal and external damping coefficients and nonlinear term of the form G' (w) = w ^p, with p an odd number greater than 1. We prove that our scheme is consistent of quadratic order, and provide a necessary condition for it to be stable order n. Part of our study will be devoted to study the effects of internal and external damping.
Synthesis, Characterization And Properties Of Nanostructured Materials By Template-Directed Method, Ran Liu
Synthesis, Characterization And Properties Of Nanostructured Materials By Template-Directed Method, Ran Liu
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Nanowires and nanotubes with single component such as gold and nickel were fabricated by electrochemical deposition method directed by the Anodic Alumina Membrane (AAO) as a template. A so called "polymer-free" method has been investigated to make striped nanowires with superlattice structure. Various methods have been used to characterize these nanomaterials, including SEM, FESEM TEM, STM and Optical Microscope. The aggregation of the nanowires and their alignment under the magnetic force were observed under the optical microscope.
Maternal And Child Anxiety: Do Attachment Beliefs And Parenting Behaviors Mediate The Association?, Natalie Costa
Maternal And Child Anxiety: Do Attachment Beliefs And Parenting Behaviors Mediate The Association?, Natalie Costa
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This paper examines the role of attachment beliefs and parenting behaviors on the association between maternal and child anxiety in a community sample of mothers and their children aged 6-17 (N = 89). Maternal anxiety was assessed through the SCL-90 & STAI-T. Child anxiety was assessed through the RCMAS-C, STAIC-T, RCMAS-P, & CBCL. Attachment beliefs were assessed through the Experiences in Close Relationships (maternal) and the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (child). Parenting behaviors were assessed through the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire and the Children's Report of Parent Behavior Inventory. Significant associations were found between maternal and child anxiety, attachment …
Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (Fret) Based Sensors For Bioanalysis, Gabriela Blagoi
Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (Fret) Based Sensors For Bioanalysis, Gabriela Blagoi
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The objective of my PhD study was to develop and characterize new methods and sensors based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) for bioanalysis. Chapter 3 describes the use of FRET between donor fluorophores and acceptor labeled murine macrophage cells. FRET microscopy was used to determine whether the donor molecules truly permeate through the cell membrane or only adsorb to the cell surface. This method was found to be partially successful since the donor red tail fluorescence overlapped with the sensitized acceptor fluorescence and led to false reading of FRET. We found that is easier to monitor delivery of acceptor …
Knowing In Childbirth, Jane Savage
Knowing In Childbirth, Jane Savage
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Research on knowing in childbirth has largely been a quantitative process. The purpose of this study was to better understand the ways nine, first-time mothers learn about birth. A phenomenological approach using a feminist view was used to analyze two in-depth interviews and journals to understand first time expectant mothers' experiences of knowing in childbirth. The findings demonstrated a range of knowledge that contributed to issues of control, confidence, hope, and conflict. The participants also described an increased dependency on their mothers and a lack of intuition contiguous to the birth process. These findings contribute understanding as to how expectant …
Secondary Clarifier Modeling: A Multi-Process Approach, Alonso Griborio
Secondary Clarifier Modeling: A Multi-Process Approach, Alonso Griborio
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The performance of settling tanks depends on several interrelated processes and factors that include: hydrodynamics, settling, turbulence, sludge rheology, flocculation, temperature changes and heat exchange, geometry, loading, the nature of the floc, the atmospheric conditions and the total dissolved solids concentration. A Quasi-3D (Q3D) clarifier model has been developed to include the following factors: axisymmetric hydrodynamics (including the swirl component), five types of settling (nonsettleable particles, unflocculated discrete settling, flocculated discrete settling, hindered settling and compression), turbulence, sludge rheology, flocculation with four classes of particles, temperature changes and surface heat exchange with the atmosphere, various external and internal geometry configurations, …
Large Scale Computer Investigations Of Non-Equilibrium Surface Growth For Surfaces From Parallel Discrete Event Simulations, Poonam Santosh Verma
Large Scale Computer Investigations Of Non-Equilibrium Surface Growth For Surfaces From Parallel Discrete Event Simulations, Poonam Santosh Verma
Theses and Dissertations
The asymptotic scaling properties of conservative algorithms for parallel discrete-event simulations (e.g.: for spatially distributed parallel simulations of dynamic Monte Carlo for spin systems) of one-dimensional systems with system size $L$ is studied. The particular case studied here is the case of one or two elements assigned to each processor element. The previously studied case of one element per processor is reviewed, and the two elements per processor case is presented. The key concept is a simulated time horizon which is an evolving non equilibrium surface, specific for the particular algorithm. It is shown that the flat-substrate initial condition is …

An Initial Study Of Town Brook, West Yarmouth, Ma
Watershed Access Lab Projects
Students from the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School began a study this year of Town Brook in West Yarmouth, MA. This year’s activity was the start of what is intended to be a multi-year study of the brook and its associated ponds. The focus of the study was to examine the physical and biological characteristics of the brook as a means of helping to determine the fitness of the brook for the re-introduction of herring to the system.
Town Brook lies within a town conservation area and is supplied water from Little Sandy Pond. The pond is a kettle pond with …
Effects Of Runoff From Downtown Middleboro On The Nemasket River
Effects Of Runoff From Downtown Middleboro On The Nemasket River
Watershed Access Lab Projects
The Nemasket River Watershed has an area of approximately 7.5 square miles. Historically this river has been used for commerce and transportation, fishing and recreation and, more recently, as a sink for wastewater effluent and urban runoff.
Our investigation was to determine what effects, if any, the runoff from “urban” Middleboro was having on the water quality just downstream from the town center and it’s aquatic life.
Our hypothesis was that the downstream location would be impacted from the increased runoff from the urban setting. The increase in pollution would be due to the increase in imperviousness of the urban …
