A Combined Crisp And Fuzzy Approach For Handwriting Analysis, N. Mogharreban, Shahram Rahimi, M. Sabharwal Jun 2004

A Combined Crisp And Fuzzy Approach For Handwriting Analysis, N. Mogharreban, Shahram Rahimi, M. Sabharwal

Computer Science Publications

This paper presents an off-line writer-independent handwriting analysis system which utilizes both classical crisp and fuzzy methodologies to output possible personality traits of the writer. The design deploys an analytical handwriting analysis approach based on two primitives, the baseline and the slant angle of the characters. The objective of the design strategy is to present a group of parameters for handwriting analysis based on the text. These parameters allow for the classification of writing into different categories which could be used as a preliminary step for outputting the personality traits of the writer. Two parameters, the baseline and the slant-angle, …

1. define the product market for white and yellow corn flour,
2. identify underserved geographic locations and demographic groups in the U.S., and
3. assess the growth potential of …

Assessment Of Surface Water Runoff And Groundwater Recharge Using Mathematical Models, Khaled Omar Mohamed Haroon Jun 2004

Assessment Of Surface Water Runoff And Groundwater Recharge Using Mathematical Models, Khaled Omar Mohamed Haroon

Accounting Dissertations

In and semi-arid regions, surface water resources are scarce and, in most cases, groundwater is the onlynatural resource of freshwater. Pumping of groundwater often exceeds natural recharge. Therefore, groundwater level are declining and its quality is deteriorating. Sustainable management of groundwater is thus a key Issue and requires implementation of appropriate technologies to augment ground water resources. Artificial recharge augments the natural movement of surface water into the underground form' illations using some means of construction whereby surface water from streams or lakes is made to infiltrate into the ground.

The UAE is known by its arid conditions and limited …

Enhanced Marine Productivity Off Western North America During Warm Climate Intervals Of The Past 52 K.Y., J.D. Ortiz, S.B. O’Connell, J. Delviscio, W. Dean, J.D. Carriquiry, T. Marchitto, Y. Zheng, A. Van Geen

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Studies of the Santa Barbara Basin off the coast of California have linked changes in its bottom-water oxygen content to millennial-scale climate changes as recorded by the oxygen isotope composition of Greenland ice. Through the use of detailed records from a sediment core collected off the Magdalena Margin of Baja California, Mexico, we demonstrate that this teleconnection predominantly arose from changes in marine productivity, rather than changes in ventilation of the North Pacific, as was originally proposed. One possible interpretation is that the modern balance of El Nino–La Nina conditions that favors a shallow nutricline and high productivity today and …

Eating Ethnicity: Examining 18th Century French Colonial Identity Through Selective Consumption Of Animal Resources In The North American Interior, Rory J. Becker Jun 2004

Eating Ethnicity: Examining 18th Century French Colonial Identity Through Selective Consumption Of Animal Resources In The North American Interior, Rory J. Becker

Masters Theses

Cultural identities can be created and maintained through daily practice and food consum.ption is one such practice. People need food in order to survive, but the types of food they eat are largely determined by the interaction of culture and their environment. By approaching the topic of subsistence practices as being culturally constituted, the study of foodways provides an avenue to examine issues of cultural identity through selective consumption. Eating certain foods to the exclusion of others is one method for establishing social distance between peoples and is simultaneously a reflection of this relationship and the types of interactions that …

Single Professional Women: A Global Phenomenon Challenges And Opportunities, Linda Berg-Cross, Anne-Marie Scholz, Joanne Long, Ewa Grzeszcyk, Anjali Roy Jun 2004

Single Professional Women: A Global Phenomenon Challenges And Opportunities, Linda Berg-Cross, Anne-Marie Scholz, Joanne Long, Ewa Grzeszcyk, Anjali Roy

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper presents the globalization of elite single professional women (SPW) as the first new global sociological phenomenon of the twenty-first century. We trace the economic roots of the phenomenon and how female empowerment interacts with the psychological prerequisites for mating. We then trace how the phenomenon is being expressed outside of the United States, in India, Poland, and Germany. We conclude by putting these observations into a historical perspective and briefly listing possible strategies for responding, adapting, and maximizing one’s options.

Who Are "The Japanese"?: Negotiation Of Identity Among Nikkei In Brazil, Chihiro Nagasue Jun 2004

Who Are "The Japanese"?: Negotiation Of Identity Among Nikkei In Brazil, Chihiro Nagasue

Masters Theses

When Japanese immigrants arrived in Brazil in the beginning of the 20th century, they recognized, for the first time, that they were "Japanese" and different from other ethnic people since it was rare for them to meet ethnically foreign people in Japan. In the ethnically and linguistically foreign country of Brazil, the Nikkei have had to constantly redefine their identity by resisting and accommodating dominant pressures and ideologies such as the Brazilian assimilation policies before and during the Second World War as well as the essentialist ideology of Nihonjinron (what it means to be Japanese). As a result of globalization, …

Evolution Of Morphological Integration. I. Functional Units Channel Stress-Induced Variation In Shrew Mandibles, Alexander V. Badyaev, Kerry R. Foresman

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Stress-induced deviations from normal development are often assumed to be random, yet their accumulation and expression can be influenced by patterns of morphological integration within an organism. We studied within-individual developmental variation ( fluctuating asymmetry) in the mandible of four shrew species raised under normal and extreme environments. Patterns of among-individual variation and fluctuating asymmetry were strongly concordant in traits that were involved in the attachment of the same muscles (i.e., functionally integrated traits), and fluctuating asymmetry was closely integrated among these traits, implying direct developmental interactions among traits involved in the same function. Stress-induced variation was largely confined to …

Prediction Of Growth Factor Effects On Engineered Cartilage Composition Using Deterministic And Stochastic Modeling, Sean S. Kohles, Asit K. Saha, J. (Jagannath) Mazumdar

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the design of engineered tissues, guided balance of biomaterial degeneration with tissue synthesis offers refined control of construct development. The objective of this study was to develop a mathematical model that describes the steady state metabolism of extracellular matrix molecules (ECM: glycosaminoglycan and collagen) in an engineered cartilage construct taking into account localized environmental changes that may arise because of the application of growth factors. The variable effects of growth factors were incorporated in the form of random noise rather than the difference in rates of synthesis and catabolism. Thus, the frequency of ECM accumulation for each matrix molecule …

Is Feminist Humor An Oxymoron?, Janet M. Bing Jun 2004

Is Feminist Humor An Oxymoron?, Janet M. Bing

English Faculty Publications

Is the subject of feminist humor male oppression or a celebration of the female experience? This paper argues for the latter and suggests that inclusive jokes can be more effectively subversive than divisive ones. As long as women's jokes focus on men, male definitions, and male behavior, women are marginalizing females, even if their jokes target males. In addition, divisive jokes can strengthen prevailing beliefs about essential female-male differences. However, when straight feminists make jokes and laugh about the shared experiences of females rather than on oppressive male behavior, then feminist humor, like lesbian humor, becomes an agent for change.

Characterization And Magnetic Properties Of Core/Shell Structured Fe/Au Nanoparticles, Sung-Jin Cho, Susan M. Kauzlarich, Justin Olamit, Kai Liu, Fernande Grandjean, Leïla Rebbouh, Gary J. Long Jun 2004

Characterization And Magnetic Properties Of Core/Shell Structured Fe/Au Nanoparticles, Sung-Jin Cho, Susan M. Kauzlarich, Justin Olamit, Kai Liu, Fernande Grandjean, Leïla Rebbouh, Gary J. Long

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Au-coated Fe nanoparticles have been prepared by using a reverse micelle method through reduction of an aqueous solution. Characterizations have been carried out over time to probe the oxidation of Fe. Immediately after synthesis, the samples exhibit metallic conduction and a negative magnetoresistance, consistent with the presence of α-Fe. The temperature dependence of magnetization displays a maximum at a blocking temperature of around 150 K. After a period of 1 month, the samples exhibit insulating behavior, indicating the oxidation of the Fe core. Mössbauer spectroscopy indicates the presence of an α-Fe component and a broad distribution of local environments.

Assisted Reproduction Versus Spontaneous Conception: A Comparison Of The Developmental Outcomes In Twins, Lisa Kelly-Vance, Kristine S. Anthis, Howard Needelman

Psychology Faculty Publications

The use of assisted reproductive technology is increasing rapidly. Research, although sparse, has resulted in inconsistent findings as to the developmental prognosis for infants conceived by assisted reproductive techniques such as in vitro fertilization and the use of fertility drugs. In the present study, the authors compared twins who were spontaneously conceived with those who were conceived through assisted reproductive technology. The authors found differences in birth weight and gestational age. Infants conceived by assisted reproductive technology fared worse than did those who were spontaneously conceived. The authors found no differences between the groups in mental development at 24 months …

“A Different Way To Portray It”: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Audiencing The [New] Newlywed Game, Christopher Reed Groscurth

Masters Theses

This study seeks to extend the body of literature which explores how culturally-situated audiences assign meaning to television texts. Specifically, this inquiry introduces and describes the audiencing behavior of several vintage television audiences. Drawing on existing cultural studies and feminist research, in-depth, semi-structured focus group interviews were used to gather viewer perceptions of the gendered discourse on two episodes of The [New] Newlywed Game (one from the '70s and one from the '90s). The focus group interviews were audio-taped then later transcribed verbatim. Six emergent themes: (1) Understanding the Discourse of Power Structures, (2) Gendered Questions: Form and Content …

The International Committee Of The Red Cross And The Development Of International Humanitarian Law, François Bugnion Jun 2004

The International Committee Of The Red Cross And The Development Of International Humanitarian Law, François Bugnion

Chicago Journal of International Law

Notwithstanding its private-initiative origins, the International Committee of the Red Cross ("ICRC") has been the main driving force behind the development of international humanitarian law for 140 years. It was the ICRC that took the initiative which led to the adoption of the original Geneva Convention of 22 August 1864, an instrument that is the starting point of contemporary international humanitarian law and a landmark in the development of public international law; it was the ICRC that laid the groundwork for the subsequent developments of that law. How was it that five individuals managed to have the initial Geneva Convention …
