Involvement Of Thromboxane A2 And Tyrosine Kinase In The Synergistic Interaction Of Platelet Activating Factor And Calcium Ionophore A23187 In Human Platelet Aggregation, Huma Rasheed, Sheikh Arshad Saeed

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

The present study was carried out to examine the mechanisms of the synergistic interaction of PAF and A23187 mediated platelet aggregation. We found that platelet aggregation mediated by subthreshold concentrations of PAF (5 nM) and A23187 (1 mM) was inhibited by PAF receptor blocker (WEB 2086, IC50 = 0.65 mM) and calcium channel blockers, diltiazem (IC50 = 13 mM) and verapamil (IC50 = 18 mM). Pretreatment of platelets with PAF and A23187 induced rise in intracellular calcium and this effect was also blocked by verapamil. While examining the role of the down stream signaling pathways, we found that platelet aggregation …

A Novel Role Of Lactosylceramide In The Regulation Of Lipopolysaccharide/Interferon-Γ-Mediated Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase Gene Expression: Implications For Neuroinflammatory Diseases, Ravinder Pannu, Je-Seong Won, Mushfiquddin Khan, Avtar K. Singh, Inderjit Singh Jun 2004

A Novel Role Of Lactosylceramide In The Regulation Of Lipopolysaccharide/Interferon-Γ-Mediated Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase Gene Expression: Implications For Neuroinflammatory Diseases, Ravinder Pannu, Je-Seong Won, Mushfiquddin Khan, Avtar K. Singh, Inderjit Singh

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

In the present study a possible role of glycosphingolipids (GSLs) in inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) gene expression and nitric oxide (NO) production after spinal cord injury (SCI) in rats has been established. In primary rat astrocytes lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) treatment increased the intracellular levels of lactosylceramide (LacCer) and induced iNOS gene expression. D-Threo-1-phenyl-2-decanoylamino-3-morpholino-1-propanol·HCI (PDMP), a glucosylceramide synthase and LacCer synthase (galactosyltransferase, GalT-2) inhibitor, inhibited LPS/IFN-γ induced iNOS expression, which was reversed by exogenously supplied LacCer, but not by other glycosphingolipids. LPS/IFN-γ caused a rapid increase in the activity of GalT-2 and synthesis of LacCer. Silencing of GalT-2 …

2004 Gender Study Of The New Jersey Public Relations Society Of America, Megan A. York

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to determine the climate of New Jersey Public Relations Society of America, 2004. The researcher sought to find logical alternatives to the much-touted theory of the "glass ceiling," that many researchers blame for salary differential between the genders. E-mail surveys were distributed to research salary, title, industry, experience, etc.

Although NJPRSA men and women have much in common, not everything is mutual. The average male is older and more experienced. Overall female dominance continues in the trade, including in two of the three highest-paying industries. Most respondents were in management positions; however, men occupy …

Brain Motion And Deformation During Closed Head Injury In The Presence Of Cerebrospinal Fluid, Charles F. Babbs Jun 2004

Brain Motion And Deformation During Closed Head Injury In The Presence Of Cerebrospinal Fluid, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a new analysis of the physics of closed head injury following brief, intense acceleration of the head. It focuses upon the buoyancy of the brain in cerebrospinal fluid, which protects against damage, the propagation of strain waves through the brain substance, which causes damage, and the concentration of strain in critical anatomic regions, which magnifies damage. Numerical methods are used to create animations or "movies" of brain motion and deformation. Initially a 1 cm gap filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) separates the brain from the skull. Whole head acceleration induces artificial gravity within the skull. The brain …

Design And Analysis Of A Process For Melt Casting Metallic Fuel Pins Incorporating Volatile Actinides, Yitung Chen, Randy Clarksean, Darrell Pepper

Fuels Campaign (TRP)

After considering the heating mechanisms, casting issues, crucible design and issues related to the mass transport of americium, an ISM system was selected for melting the feedstock and casting fuel pins containing high vapor pressure actinides (americium). The finite element commercial software (FIDAP) was used to simulate the induction melting process and the casting process. Phase change is considered both in the heating and in the solidification process. Various factors and properties are studied, such as boundary conditions and initial conditions, output current, frequency of the current, main dimensions of the system, mold preheating temperature, heat transfer coefficient and mold …

Quantification And Visualization Of Ld Patterns And Identification Of Haplotype Blocks, Yan Wang, Sandrine Dudoit Jun 2004

Quantification And Visualization Of Ld Patterns And Identification Of Haplotype Blocks, Yan Wang, Sandrine Dudoit

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Classical measures of linkage disequilibrium (LD) between two loci, based only on the joint distribution of alleles at these loci, present noisy patterns. In this paper, we propose a new distance-based LD measure, R, which takes into account multilocus haplotypes around the two loci in order to exploit information from neighboring loci. The LD measure R yields a matrix of pairwise distances between markers, based on the correlation between the lengths of shared haplotypes among chromosomes around these markers. Data analysis demonstrates that visualization of LD patterns through the R matrix reveals more deterministic patterns, with much less noise, than …

Caring As Catalyst; A Model For Health Possibilities, Brenda A. Becker Jun 2004

Caring As Catalyst; A Model For Health Possibilities, Brenda A. Becker

Theses and Graduate Projects

This graduate field project presents a conceptual model based on the theoretical frameworks of Brentano, Frankl, Rogers, Merry, Benner, and Wrubel and is designed to facilitate the life journey to more complex levels. The model has a foundation in chaos theory and in the search for meaning. Key concepts of catalyst, presence, polarization, and participation are defined and described. Presence is defined at three levels: physical, psychological, and therapeutic. Participation is defined as a sharing of the life and experience between nurse and person. Polarization, or change in pattern, is also defined at three levels: active, collaborative, and passive. The …

Purpose: To 1) critically appraise available randomized controlled trials (RTCs) addressing the efficacy of long-chain ω-3 fatty acids as a secondary prevention agent of hypertriglyceridemia, and 2) make recommendations for clinical practice.

Data Sources: All RCTs identified from several databases from 1993-2003 were reviewed by two independent reviewers who extracted data from each study and used the previously tested Boyack and Lookinland Methodological Quality Index (MQI) to determine study quality.

Results: Ten studies reported long-chain ω-3 fatty acids to be effective in the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia. The average decrease in triglycerides (TG) was 29%, total cholesterol (TC) 11.6%, very low …

Efficacy Of Quality Criteria To Identify Potentially Harmful Information: A Cross-Sectional Survey Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine Web Sites, Muhammad Walji, Smitha Sagaram, Deepak Sagaram, Funda Meric-Bernstam, Craig Johnson, Nadeem Q Mirza, Elmer V Bernstam Jun 2004

Efficacy Of Quality Criteria To Identify Potentially Harmful Information: A Cross-Sectional Survey Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine Web Sites, Muhammad Walji, Smitha Sagaram, Deepak Sagaram, Funda Meric-Bernstam, Craig Johnson, Nadeem Q Mirza, Elmer V Bernstam

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Many users search the Internet for answers to health questions. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is a particularly common search topic. Because many CAM therapies do not require a clinician's prescription, false or misleading CAM information may be more dangerous than information about traditional therapies. Many quality criteria have been suggested to filter out potentially harmful online health information. However, assessing the accuracy of CAM information is uniquely challenging since CAM is generally not supported by conventional literature. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine whether domain-independent technical quality criteria can identify potentially harmful online CAM content. …

Logic, Language And Legal Science: Are We Lagging Behind?, James S. Mcquade Jun 2004

Logic, Language And Legal Science: Are We Lagging Behind?, James S. Mcquade

ExpressO

The central theme of this article is that modern notions of logic, deriving from computer logics and also from the language and logic movement in philosophy, provide a sound basis for legal science and hence for legal writing, law practice and legal education. Scepticism about legal formalism largely derives from the fact that the term logic is still taken to mean the syllogistic logic of Aristotle. Modern notions of logic, generally referred to as formalism or formal studies, view knowledge in general and science in particular in terms of game theory, applying word, number letter and iconic games to data …

Diamond V. Chakrabarty: Gauging Congress’ Response To Dynamic Statutory Interpretation By The Supreme Court , Anna E. Lumelsky Jun 2004

Diamond V. Chakrabarty: Gauging Congress’ Response To Dynamic Statutory Interpretation By The Supreme Court , Anna E. Lumelsky

ExpressO

In this article, I consider the 1980 Supreme Court decision, Diamond v. Chakrabarty, and Congress’ response to it in light of several contemporary views on statutory interpretation. I conclude that in science and technology-related cases in which delay could significantly hamper the advancement of the field, the Supreme Court should interpret federal statutes dynamically in response to a changing social context, but should also attempt to conform its interpretations to legislative preferences in order to avoid a legislative override.

High Polymorphism In The K-Casein (Csn3) Gene From Wild And Domestic Caprine Species Revealed By Dna Sequencing, Oliver C. Jann, Eva-Maria Prinzenberg, Gordon Luikart, Ana Caroli, Georg Erhardt Jun 2004

High Polymorphism In The K-Casein (Csn3) Gene From Wild And Domestic Caprine Species Revealed By Dna Sequencing, Oliver C. Jann, Eva-Maria Prinzenberg, Gordon Luikart, Ana Caroli, Georg Erhardt

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

We assessed polymorphisms in exon IV of the k-casein gene (CSN3) in ten different breeds of domestic goat (Capra hircus) from three continents and in three related wild caprine taxa (Capra ibex, Capra sibirica and Capra aegagrus). Thirty-five DNA samples were sequenced within a 558 bp fragment of exon IV. Nine polymorphic sites were identified in domestic goat, including four new polymorphisms. In addition to four previously described polymorphic positions, a total of 13 polymorphisms allowed the identification of 13 DNA variants, corresponding to 10 protein variants. Because of conflicting nomenclature of these variants, we propose …

Pressurized Hot Water And Dtpa-Sorbitol, Viable Alternatives For Soil Boron Extraction, Amanda Kathryn Shiffler Jun 2004

Pressurized Hot Water And Dtpa-Sorbitol, Viable Alternatives For Soil Boron Extraction, Amanda Kathryn Shiffler

Theses and Dissertations

Pressurized hot water and DTPA-Sorbitol are two relatively new soil boron (B) extraction methods with potential to replace the cumbersome hot water extraction. The objective of this research is to produce data in support of acceptance or rejection of these two alternative B extractions. The three soil tests were used to extract B from samples of calcareous sand and silt loam and limed, loamy fine sand treated with 10 levels of B and incubated for 7 and 28 d. As B application increased so did extractable B with each extraction method. High correlations (r of 0.977 to 0.999) were observed …

Allosteric Β1 Integrin Antibodies That Stabilize The Low Affinity State By Preventing The Swing-Out Of The Hybrid Domain, Bing Hao Luo, Konstantin Strokovich, Thomas Walz, Timothy A. Springer, Junichi Takagi Jun 2004

Allosteric Β1 Integrin Antibodies That Stabilize The Low Affinity State By Preventing The Swing-Out Of The Hybrid Domain, Bing Hao Luo, Konstantin Strokovich, Thomas Walz, Timothy A. Springer, Junichi Takagi

Faculty Publications

The ligand binding function of integrins can be modulated by various monoclonal antibodies by both direct and indirect mechanisms. We have characterized an anti-β1 antibody, SG/19, that had been reported to inhibit the function of the β1 integrin on the cell surface. SG/19 recognized the wild type β1 subunit that exists in a conformational equilibrium between the high and low affinity states but bound poorly to a mutant β1 integrin that had been locked in a high affinity state. Epitope mapping of SG/19 revealed that Thr82 in the β1 subunit, located at the outer face of the boundary between the …

Neural Networks, Knowledge And Cognition: A Mathematical Semantic Model Based Upon Category Theory, Michael John Healy, Thomas Preston Caudell Jun 2004

Neural Networks, Knowledge And Cognition: A Mathematical Semantic Model Based Upon Category Theory, Michael John Healy, Thomas Preston Caudell

Electrical & Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Category theory can be applied to mathematically model the semantics of cognitive neural systems. We discuss semantics as a hierarchy of concepts, or symbolic descriptions of items sensed and represented in the connection weights distributed throughout a neural network. The hierarchy expresses subconcept relationships, and in a neural network it becomes represented incrementally through a Hebbian-like learning process. The categorical semantic model described here explains the learning process as the derivation of colimits and limits in a concept category. It explains the representation of the concept hierarchy in a neural network at each stage of learning as a system of …

Mechanism Governing The Cellular Susceptibility To Secretory Phospholipase A2, Lauren Blackburn Jensen Jun 2004

Mechanism Governing The Cellular Susceptibility To Secretory Phospholipase A2, Lauren Blackburn Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

Secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) is an important part of apoptosis and disposal of damaged and dying cells. However, healthy cells are not susceptible to attack by sPLA2. Recent studies have focused on membrane properties necessary to induce susceptibility in both artificial and biological membranes. Hydrolysis of phospholipids by sPLA2 requires at least two preliminary steps: first, adsorption of the enzyme to the cellular membrane, and second, movement of a phospholipid into the active site of the enzyme. We determined the effects of susceptibility on each of the two steps and determined the contributions changing the equilibrium constants have on susceptibility. …

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering

The magnitude of future climate change depends substantially on the greenhouse gas emission pathways we choose. Here we explore the implications of the highest and lowest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change emissions pathways for climate change and associated impacts in California. Based on climate projections from two state-of-the-art climate models with low and medium sensitivity (Parallel Climate Model and Hadley Centre Climate Model, version 3, respectively), we find that annual temperature increases nearly double from the lower B1 to the higher A1fi emissions scenario before 2100. Three of four simulations also show greater increases in summer temperatures as compared with …
