A Review Of Diseases Found In Cabbage And The Effects Of Ultraviolet -B On Black Rot., Dameion J. Crook
A Review Of Diseases Found In Cabbage And The Effects Of Ultraviolet -B On Black Rot., Dameion J. Crook
Theses (Pre-2016)
The objective of this study is to determine the effects of elevated UV-B (320 - 290 run) light on Xanthomonas campestris. Xanthomonas campestris is a bacterium that causes a disease commonly known as Black Rot. This disease affects crucifers a large variety of vegetable crops. The disease is easily recognized by the presence of yellow, V-shaped lesions extending inward from the margin of the leaf. The disease progresses, the yellow lesions tum brown and the tissue dies. Veins darken and the mid-rib of leaves tum black within in the infected area. The veins discoloration progresses toward the base of the …

Nato Technology: From Gap To Divergence?, Donald C. Daniel
Nato Technology: From Gap To Divergence?, Donald C. Daniel
Defense Horizons
A widening technology gap between the United States and other NATO members will challenge the ability of NATO to function as a cohesive, multinational force. Over several decades, great disparities in the funding of defense research and technology by NATO members has produced a widening technological gap that threatens to become a divergence—a condition from which the Alliance may not be able to recover. The technology gap, in turn, is creating a capabilities gap that undercuts the operational effectiveness of NATO forces, including the new NATO Response Force.
With only slight modifications (not additions) to current total defense expenditures, and …
Evolutionary Convergence To Ideal Free Dispersal Strategies And Coexistence, Richard Gejji, Yuan Lou, Daniel Munther, Justin Peyton
Evolutionary Convergence To Ideal Free Dispersal Strategies And Coexistence, Richard Gejji, Yuan Lou, Daniel Munther, Justin Peyton
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
We study a two species competition model in which the species have the same population dynamics but different dispersal strategies and show how these dispersal strategies evolve. We introduce a general dispersal strategy which can result in the ideal free distributions of both competing species at equilibrium and generalize the result of Averill et al. (2011). We further investigate the convergent stability of this ideal free dispersal strategy by varying random dispersal rates, advection rates, or both of these two parameters simultaneously. For monotone resource functions, our analysis reveals that among two similar dispersal strategies, selection generally prefers the strategy …
Should Governments Play Robin Hood? The Effects Of The Repeal Of The Estate Tax On Wealth Apportionment, Mark Bernstein
Should Governments Play Robin Hood? The Effects Of The Repeal Of The Estate Tax On Wealth Apportionment, Mark Bernstein
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The note explores the debate surrounding wealth disparity and the effectiveness of taxes, such as the estate tax and net wealth tax, in addressing this issue. It examines the historical and contemporary arguments for and against these taxes, drawing comparisons between the U.S. and countries like Japan, Sweden, and Switzerland. The analysis highlights the tension between reducing wealth inequality and maintaining economic growth, ultimately suggesting that a well-structured net wealth tax could be a viable solution to both redistribute wealth and generate revenue.
Foreign Policy And Separation Of Powers Jurisprudence: Executive Orders Regarding Export Administration Act Extension In Times Of Lapse As A Political Question, Themes Karalis
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The article examines the interplay between the Export Administration Act (EAA) and the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), particularly focusing on whether the EAA qualifies as an Exemption 3 statute under FOIA. It explores how courts have upheld the EAA's exemption status even during periods of lapse, emphasizing the executive branch's authority to maintain export controls through executive orders. The analysis highlights the deference given to the executive in foreign policy matters and the challenges posed by the EAA's temporary nature, suggesting that Congress should consider amending the EAA for automatic renewal to avoid recurring issues.

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of Escherichia coli 0157:H7 on feedlot profits. Fecal samples from 711 feedlot pens in 73 feedlots in Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas were tested for E. coli 0157:H7. Average daily gain and feed-to-gain ratios were computed for each feedlot pen, and managers from each feedlot provided information on various feedlot management practices. Cattle performance and E. coli 0157:H7 prevalence are both affected by feedlot management practices. The indirect effect of E. coli 0157:H7 on potential feedlot profits was determined by measuring the effects of management practices on E. coli 0157:H7 …

The Ultrastructure Of The Olfactory System In Two Species Of Short-Tailed Shrews, Blarina Brevicauda And Blarina Carolinensis, Lisa Johnson Byrum
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Several studies of the fine structure of the olfactory system of rodents have been conducted, but very little research has been done on members of the Insectivora. The olfactory systems of the northern short-tailed shrew, Blarina brevicauda, and the southern short-tailed shrew, Blarina carolinensis, were examined by light and electron microscopy. These shrews were live trapped in the vicinity of Norfolk, Virginia throughout all months of the year. Olfactory tissues were processed following standard transmission and scanning electron microscopy protocols. The olfactory system structures investigated included the olfactory epitheliumlmucosa (OEM), main olfactory bulb (MOB), accessory olfactory bulb (AOB), …
Pavlivian Conditioning To Insulin-Induced Hypoglycemia As Indicated By Glycemic Response Motor Activity And Anxiety, Jermaine Dionte Jones
Pavlivian Conditioning To Insulin-Induced Hypoglycemia As Indicated By Glycemic Response Motor Activity And Anxiety, Jermaine Dionte Jones
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this experiment was to demonstrate the responses to stimuli predicting the onset of hypoglycemia {HG), specifically the overt behavioral and glycemic conditioned responses to insulin-produced HG. When drug-opposite compensatory responses become associated with situational and environmental cues that predict drug administration, compensatory mechanisms can be elicited solely by drugassociated cues. Several studies have been conducted to determine the conditioned bloodglucose responses as elicited by stimuli predicting hypoglycemia. However, only a few studies have examined the behavioral conditioned responses associated with hypoglycemia. Insulin-induced HG and the elevated plus maze (EPM) procedure were utilized to determine the direction of …
A Cross-National Analysis Of The Impact Of Conscription On Crime Rates, Nicolette G. Rose
A Cross-National Analysis Of The Impact Of Conscription On Crime Rates, Nicolette G. Rose
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
Research has repeatedly shown that males in the age range of 16 to 24 years account for a disproportionately large volume of crime (Sampson and Laub 1993 ). The armed forces are major employers of young males in this crime-prone age range and could thus play an important role in crime prevention. The military provides many varied opportunities including a highly structured and regimented institution in which rigid behavioral norms and close monitoring are imposed. Some other incentives that service provides include educational opportunities through the" Advanced Individual Training", the GI Bill, in-service tuition assistance, and world-wide travel. All these …
Field Effect Control Of Electrokinetic Transport Phenomena In Nanofluidics, Song Xue
Field Effect Control Of Electrokinetic Transport Phenomena In Nanofluidics, Song Xue
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Naturally nanofluidics has applications demanding the samples to be handled in exceedingly small quantities due to the small size of the fluidic channels in nanofluidic devices, such as characterization of single biomolecules. Fluids confined in channels of nanometer characteristic dimensions exhibit physical behaviors not observed in large conduits. Charge properties of the nanochannel wall in contact with an aqueous solution play essential roles in the involved electrokinetic transport phenomena occurring in nanofluidic devices. In addition to tuning the charge properties of the nanofluidic channel wall by adjusting the solution properties such as pH and background salt concentration, field effect transistor …
A Staging Sequence And Analysis Of Growth In Postovipositional Embryos Of Lamprophis Fulignosus, Angela Renee Vogel Rivera
A Staging Sequence And Analysis Of Growth In Postovipositional Embryos Of Lamprophis Fulignosus, Angela Renee Vogel Rivera
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The brown house snake, Lamprophis fuliginosus, is a small, oviparous snake found throughout much of Africa. This lamprophiine colubrid reproduces rapidly; captive females can lay clutches every three to four months for a sustained period. Thus, L. fuliginosus is an excellent model for developmental studies requiring large numbers of embryos. In addition, the embryos of oviparous species are more suitable for some procedures than are those of viviparous forms. The most widely used system for staging embryonic snakes was developed for the common gartersnake, Thamnophis sirtalis, a viviparous natricine colubrid (Zehr, 1962). Based on the examination of 135 …

Effects Of Ultrasonic And Hand-Activated Scaling On Tactile Sensitivity In Second Year Dental Hygiene Students In A Clinical Setting, Miranda Beeson
Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if time spent instrumenting class III, IV, and V calculus clients, either hand-activated or with an ultrasonic scaler, decreased the tactile sensitivity of the clinician, and if change occurs in index finger, middle finger, and thumb tactile sensitivity prior to and following 45-minute scaling episodes. This study also afforded an opportunity to determine if tactile sensitivity changed in the same dental hygiene students over a one-year period of time by comparing data with that of a similar study conducted in the fall of 2002. Random assignment and a sample size of 25 …

Neuropsychological Functioning Of Homeless Men, Cindy L. Solliday-Mcroy, Todd Campbell, Timothy P. Melchert, Terrence Young, Ron A. Cisler
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
Numerous biological and psychological factors associated with impaired neurological functioning have been identified as common among the homeless, but there has been relatively little systematic examination of the cognitive functioning of homeless people. This study explored the neuropsychological functioning of 90 homeless men. There was great variability in their test scores, but the presence of possible cognitive impairment was detected in 80% of the sample. Average general intellectual functioning and reading abilities were found to be relatively low, and the incidence of impairments in reading, new verbal learning, memory, and attention and concentration was high. These findings suggest that the …
Whiteness Enacted, Whiteness Disrupted: The Complexity Of Personal Congruence, Sharon Chubbuck
Whiteness Enacted, Whiteness Disrupted: The Complexity Of Personal Congruence, Sharon Chubbuck
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
This study of the enactment and disruption of Whiteness in two White secondary literacy teachers focuses on their life histories and their practice and policy in relation to students of color. Both teachers demonstrated some disruption of Whiteness as well as some continued enactment of Whiteness, despite their stated intentions. The findings indicate that neither an abolition of Whiteness nor a rearticulation of Whiteness includes a sufficiently complex understanding of how disruption of Whiteness is influenced by the interplay of personal identity, the need to maintain personal congruence, and the cultural constraints of Whiteness. The author suggests that the inclusion …

Performance Of Constraint-Handling Techniques Applied To A Genetic Algorithm-Based Watershed Management Model, Kwisun Park Yu
Performance Of Constraint-Handling Techniques Applied To A Genetic Algorithm-Based Watershed Management Model, Kwisun Park Yu
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Wet detention ponds are a commonly used structural best management practice to reduce nonpoint source pollutant loading into receiving water bodies. Design of these ponds is typically carried out individually to meet a target total suspended solids (TSS) removal level. An improvement to this approach is to generate cost-effective pond configurations that meet system-wide targets for removal of pollutant loadings, corresponding to a specific build-out land use plan. The cost-effectiveness can be further improved through appropriate land use allocation planning conducted simultaneously with the design of detention ponds. Harrell and Ranjithan (2003) presented an evolutionary algorithm- (EA-) based modeling approach …
Idiomatic Expressions And Marital Relationships Over Three Stages Of The Family Lifespan, Meredith T. Raynor
Idiomatic Expressions And Marital Relationships Over Three Stages Of The Family Lifespan, Meredith T. Raynor
Institute for the Humanities Theses
In interpersonal communication language shared between two people becomes important in the everyday life of relational participants. Even more so, the language shared between married couples is vital because of their "unique relationship". Part of that language involves the symbols, gestures and words called idioms that have specialized meaning for the marital dyad.
This thesis sought to discover what idioms are identified among married couples at three stages of the family lifespan, newlyweds, couples with children and empty nest couples as they seek to maintain a system of "personalized communication" as it relates to their marital satisfaction (Breuss & Pearson, …
Gender And Hiv Risk Behavior In China, Yelan Guo
Gender And Hiv Risk Behavior In China, Yelan Guo
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
Gender differences in prevalence of HIV risk behaviors are well established. Gender differences in major causes leading to HN risk behaviors are much less researched in China. Using data from a large and population-based survey conducted in 2003, in southwestern China, this paper examined gender-specific correlates of HIV risky drug using and sexual behaviors in the general population. Both bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted for males and females separately. The results suggest that men are more likely to inject drugs and share needles than women while women are more likely to exhibit RN risk sexual behaviors than men. Socio-economic …
A Community Assessment Of Drinking And Driving Predictors: Alcohol Outlets And Socioeconomic Factors, Cynthia L. Shier
A Community Assessment Of Drinking And Driving Predictors: Alcohol Outlets And Socioeconomic Factors, Cynthia L. Shier
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to examine drinking and driving behaviors among different socioeconomic status neighborhoods. This study included a telephone survey that measured demographics, characteristics of the environment, and self-report alcohol use. In addition to the telephone survey, the researcher examined archival data such as alcohol-related traffic crash reports. Geographical information systems (GIS) programming was used to graphically plot alcohol-related traffic crash locations simultaneously with the locations of alcohol outlets. A review of the literature on drinking and driving was inconsistent; therefore, the researcher hypotheses were chosen to clear up some of these contradictions. The hypothesis that alcohol …
Modeling Nerve Electro-Stimulation In The Nanosecond Regime, Feng Chen
Modeling Nerve Electro-Stimulation In The Nanosecond Regime, Feng Chen
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Numerical simulations of electrical stimulation of frog gastrocnemius muscles have been carried out for pulse durations in the nanosecond regime. There are a number of potential advantages in using ultra-short pulses for neural stimulation, and no previous electro-stimulation work in the sub-microsecond regime has been reported. A timedependent, three-dimensional analysis model was developed and implemented for three distinct situations: (i) direct stimulation via electrode contact, (ii) indirect excitation based on electrodes immersed in a saline-filled bath, and (iii) remote electromagnetic stimulation through vacuum. The simulations yielded strength-dm ation (S-D) curves with pulse durations as short as 5 ns. Good agreement …
Anthropogenic Lead Deposition And Four National Parks In Poland As Determined By Lead Isotope Ratios, Shannon Simcoe
Anthropogenic Lead Deposition And Four National Parks In Poland As Determined By Lead Isotope Ratios, Shannon Simcoe
OES Theses and Dissertations
Polluted soils are recognized by having high concentrations of heavy metals, including Pb. Partitioning of metals in geochemical fractions, by sequential chemical extractions, may indicate whether a metal has been recently deposited in the soil. While concentration levels alone cannot distinguish between natural and anthropogenic Pb, studies have demonstrated that anthropogenic pollution is accurately recorded by specific Pb isotope signatures, which differ from natural Pb isotopes. The objective of this project was to use 206Pb/207Pb and 206Pb/204Pb isotope ratios to differentiate between the anthropogenic Pb input and the naturally occurring Pb in four national …
The Wedding Bells Heard Around The World: Years From Now, Will We Wonder Why We Worried About Same-Sex Marriage?, Mark E. Wojcik
The Wedding Bells Heard Around The World: Years From Now, Will We Wonder Why We Worried About Same-Sex Marriage?, Mark E. Wojcik
Northern Illinois University Law Review
This article is a historical, international, and timely examination of issues commonly raised by the marriage of same-sex couples in anticipation of the impending changes in this area of the law in the United States. Through a survey of important developments and a comparison of the treatment of same-sex couples vis a vis marriage in various locales, the author argues that fears about recognizing same-sex couples destroying our country or the institution of marriage are irrational, and that it is time now to recognize that same-sex couples deserve the same recognition and protection of the law afforded to opposite-sex couples. …
