Transparency Tube Provides Reliable Measure Of Water Clarity And Suspended Solids Concentration In California Waterways, Gary M. Litton, R. Dahlgren, E. V. Nieuwenhuyse Jul 2004

Transparency Tube Provides Reliable Measure Of Water Clarity And Suspended Solids Concentration In California Waterways, Gary M. Litton, R. Dahlgren, E. V. Nieuwenhuyse

All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science

We examined the efficacy of using transparency-tube measurements to estimate turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS) and particulate nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in several California waterways. Just as lowering a black-and-white disk (Secchi disk) into a lake provides a convenient way to measure its water clarity, a transparency tube offers a practical alternative for measuring water clarity and suspended solids concentrations in California streams and waterways. While transparency relationships with turbidity and TSS are strongest within a given sampling location, these relationships are relatively robust across a wide range of water bodies displaying contrasting conditions. However, transparency-tube measurements appear to have …

Model Parameters And Outbreak Control For Sars, Christopher Kribs, Gerardo Chowell, Carlos Castillo-Chavez, Paul W. Fenimore, Leon Arriola, James M. Hyman

Mathematics Faculty Publications - Archive

Control of the 2002–2003 severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak was based on rapid diagnosis coupled with effective patient isolation. We used uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of the basic reproductive number R0 to assess the role that model parameters play in outbreak control. The transmission rate and isolation effectiveness have the largest fractional effect on R0. We estimated the distribution of the reproductive number R0 under perfect isolation conditions. The distribution lies in the interquartile range 0.19–1.08, with a median of 0.49. Even though the median of R0 is <1, we found that 25% of our R0 distribution lies at R0 > 1, even with perfect isolation. This implies the need to simultaneously …

Preliminary Observations Of Global Ocean Mass Variations With Grace, D. Chambers, J. Wahr, R Steven Nerem Jul 2004

Preliminary Observations Of Global Ocean Mass Variations With Grace, D. Chambers, J. Wahr, R Steven Nerem

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Monthly estimates of the Earth's gravitational field from the GRACE mission are used to construct a time‐series of global mean ocean mass variations between August 2002 and December 2003. This time‐series is compared to a mean climatology determined from satellite altimeter measurements of global mean sea level corrected for the steric variation. The GRACE observations show a seasonal exchange of water mass with the continents of the same magnitude (∼8.5 mm) and phase (maximum in early‐ to mid‐October) as the steric‐corrected altimetry. This is one of the first direct validations over the ocean of the primary GRACE science mission to …

Bald Eagle Nesting Status In Texas, Brent Ortego, Chris Gregory Jul 2004

Bald Eagle Nesting Status In Texas, Brent Ortego, Chris Gregory

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has been tracking recovery of the Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) since it was placed on the endangered species list. The number of Bald Eagles nesting in Texas has been rapidly increasing since 1987, with twenty (20) active nests documented at that time. The number of active nests increased to 37 in 1992, 54 in 1997, and 110 in 2002. Nineteen (19) new Bald Eagle nesting territories were located, and 117 of 159 nest territories observed were occupied in 2003. One hundred and fortyfour (144) young were fledged from 92 of the 117 occupied nests. Density …

Assessment Of Aflatoxin Toxicity In Bobwhites And Cardinals, Deana L. Moore, Scott E. Henke, Alan M. Fedynich, Jamie C. Laurenz Jul 2004

Assessment Of Aflatoxin Toxicity In Bobwhites And Cardinals, Deana L. Moore, Scott E. Henke, Alan M. Fedynich, Jamie C. Laurenz

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

Aflatoxin is a widely occurring and dangerous mycotoxin that grows on grain. Wildlife can be exposed by ingesting aflatoxin-contaminated grain supplied though supplemental feeding and baiting. Even though considered harmful, little information has been published on the specific impact of aflatoxin on birds. Therefore, our objectives were to determine the level of aflatoxin that negatively affects normal physiological responses and induces acute morbidity and mortality in northern bobwhites and northern cardinals.

Excitation Energies From Time-Dependent Density-Functional Theory Beyond The Adiabatic Approximation, Carsten A. Ullrich, Kieron Burke Jul 2004

Excitation Energies From Time-Dependent Density-Functional Theory Beyond The Adiabatic Approximation, Carsten A. Ullrich, Kieron Burke

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The nonadiabatic effects for excitation energies from time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) were analyzed. a general analytic expression for nonadiabatic corrections to excitation energies of finite systems was derived and singlet s→s and s→p excitations of closed-shell atoms were calculated. It is observed that as the Vignale, Ullrich and Conti (VUC) functional is based on frequency-dependent xc kernel of homogeneous electron gas so it produces excitation energies with small but finite imaginary parts. the results show that the VUC approach determines excitation energies for atomic and molecular systems as well as for plasmon-like excitations in solids.

The City As Refuge: Constructing Urban Blackness In Paul Laurence Dunbar’S 'The Sport Of The Gods' And James Weldon Johnson’S 'Autobiography Of An Ex-Colored Man.', Thomas Lewis Morgan Jul 2004

The City As Refuge: Constructing Urban Blackness In Paul Laurence Dunbar’S 'The Sport Of The Gods' And James Weldon Johnson’S 'Autobiography Of An Ex-Colored Man.', Thomas Lewis Morgan

English Faculty Publications

This essay analyzes the narrative strategies that Paul Laurence Dunbar and James Weldon Johnson used to represent black characters in The Sport of the Gods and The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man as a means of examining the authors' construction of the city as an alternative space for depicting African Americans. In late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century fiction, the majority of African American images in popular fiction were confined to Southern-based pastoral depictions that restricted black identity to stereotypically limited and historically regressive ideas, exemplified in such characters as Zip Coon, Sambo, Uncle Tom, Jim Crow, and Mammy Jane. The …

Disease Problems And Bill Deformities In Birds, Sumner W. Dana Jul 2004

Disease Problems And Bill Deformities In Birds, Sumner W. Dana

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

Bill deformities in wild birds are rare with a frequency estimated to be less than 0.5%. Two groups, Icterids (blackbirds) and Mimids (catbird, mockingbird and thrashers), seem to have a higher rate of deformed bills than other families. It is interisting that, in my banding experience, these two groups also exhibit more tumors and lesions as well.

Developing Scientific Talent In Students With Special Needs: An Alternative Model For Identification, Curriculum, And Assessment, Carolyn R. Cooper, Susan M. Baum, Terry W. Neu Jul 2004

Developing Scientific Talent In Students With Special Needs: An Alternative Model For Identification, Curriculum, And Assessment, Carolyn R. Cooper, Susan M. Baum, Terry W. Neu

Education Faculty Publications

Can students with learning and attention difficulties in school actually be talented scientists in disguise? This article presents a model that was highly successful in identifying and developing scientific talent in these special students. The factors that contributed to the success of the model were the following: The emphasis was on helping students become creative producers. The model also featured a strong mentoring component that included role-modeling and problem solving within specific scientific domains and provided students with authentic, discovery-based, experiential, advanced level subject matter of the domain. Finally, the alternate means of assessing student achievement focused on a student’s …

Reduction Of Complex Models Using Data-Mining And Nonlinear Projection Techniques, K. Bernhardt, K. W. Wirtz Jul 2004

Reduction Of Complex Models Using Data-Mining And Nonlinear Projection Techniques, K. Bernhardt, K. W. Wirtz

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Complex models of environmental systems typically depend on a large amount of uncertain parameters. Therefore, they are often difficult to handle and do not provide an insight into effective modes of the underlying system’s dynamics. Unlike earlier analytical attempts to find more effective model representations, we present a new combination of methods that only relies on data generated by complex, process-based models. These methods are taken from the field of data-mining and enable the recognition of patterns in measured or modelled data by unsupervised learning strategies. As these methods do not directly lead to a better understanding of the systems’ …

Water Quality Modelling In Rivers With Limited Observational Data: River Elbe Case Study, Renata J. Romanowicz, Ulrich Callies, Peter C. Young Jul 2004

Water Quality Modelling In Rivers With Limited Observational Data: River Elbe Case Study, Renata J. Romanowicz, Ulrich Callies, Peter C. Young

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Water quality predictions in an ungauged catchment require the development of a model that is able to capture the basic physical features of the process and depends only on variables that are easily available. From this point of view, the model has similar requirements to those used in future climate scenario analysis. The mechanistic water quality model, developed in GKSS, Germany, for the purpose of climate change analysis, uses only climatic variables, such as temperature, radiation and discharge, to predict the time variability of algae concentrations. This paper presents the development of a statistical analogue to this mechanistic model. The …

A Spatial Dss For South Australia's Prawn Fisheries. Using Historic Knowledge Towards Environmental And Economical Sustainability, B. Ostendorf, N. Carrick

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The Spencer Gulf Penaeid prawn fishery is an example of a sustainable fishery due to close collaboration between fishers, research and government. The fishery has undergone substantial increase in fishing efficiency due to improvement in gear, increase in crew skill, effective use of communication networks for monitoring catch, stock assessment, and for rapid response for change in harvest strategies. Spatial decision-making has reduced the fishing effort to around 60 days per year and less than 10% of the area of the Gulf is trawled, with increasing economic gain due to development of real time adaptive harvest strategies undertaken in collaboration …

Assessing The Ecological Impacts Of Salinity Management Using A Bayesian Decision Network, A. Sadoddin, R. A. Letcher, Lachlan T. H. Newham Jul 2004

Assessing The Ecological Impacts Of Salinity Management Using A Bayesian Decision Network, A. Sadoddin, R. A. Letcher, Lachlan T. H. Newham

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper outlines a component of a study currently being undertaken to provide a new tool for the holistic management of dryland salinity. The Little River catchment in the upper Macquarie River basin of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, is used as a case study. The model uses a Bayesian Decision Network (BDN) approach to integrating the various system components – biophysical, social, ecological, and economic. The method of integration of the system components is demonstrated through an example application showing the impacts of various scenarios on terrestrial and riparian ecology. The paper outlines these scenarios and demonstrates the way …
