Introduction Of Healing Touch Into An Established Torture Treatment Center: A Graduate Field Project, Kathleen Mccullough-Zander Jul 2004

Introduction Of Healing Touch Into An Established Torture Treatment Center: A Graduate Field Project, Kathleen Mccullough-Zander

Theses and Graduate Projects

Healing Touch, an energetic treatment modality developed by nurses, was introduced into an established torture treatment center with the goal of decreasing torture-related symptoms and increasing survivors' overall sense of well-being and health. Three methods of evaluation were used to determine if the project goal had been met. The first project objective of showing a decrease in participants' reported feelings of anxiety and depression was not achieved. The second project objective of demonstrating a reduction in participant's reported levels of pain was achieved with statistically significant results. The third project objective of obtaining statements of recognition of the therapy as …

Discovering Transcriptional Regulatory Rules From Gene Expression And Tf-Dna Binding Data By Decision Tree Learning, Jianhua Ruan, Weixiong Zhang Jul 2004

Discovering Transcriptional Regulatory Rules From Gene Expression And Tf-Dna Binding Data By Decision Tree Learning, Jianhua Ruan, Weixiong Zhang

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Background: One of the most promising but challenging task in the post-genomic era is to reconstruct the transcriptional regulatory networks. The goal is to reveal, for each gene that responds to a certain biological event, which transcription factors affect its transcription, and how several transcription factors coordinate to accomplish specific regulations. Results: Here we propose a supervised machine learning approach to address these questions. We build decision trees to associate the expression level of a gene with the transcription factor binding data of its promoter. From the decision trees, we extract regulatory rules that specify how the binding of a …

Hermine Cloeter, Feuilletons, And Vienna: A Flaneuse And Urban Cultural Archaeologist Wandering Through Opaque Spaces, Bridging Past And Present To Reclaim What Could Be Lost, Kelli D. Barbour Jul 2004

Hermine Cloeter, Feuilletons, And Vienna: A Flaneuse And Urban Cultural Archaeologist Wandering Through Opaque Spaces, Bridging Past And Present To Reclaim What Could Be Lost, Kelli D. Barbour

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the authority that time holds in the discipline of studying events of the past, not all historians or writers analyzing the past use time to study history—some use space, including writers who write about and interact with an urban topography. The space used by these writers is built space, as well as inhabited and practiced "lived" space. Whereas time provides a transparent overview of history, the urban spaces tend to be opaque. Clarifying history through urban space is additionally troublesome, because built space and its attached memories are visibly forgotten and ignored as time advances. Despite the difficulties of …

Factors Related To Fecal Estrogens And Fecal Testosterone In California Spotted Owls, Brian E. Washburn, Douglas J. Tempel, Joshua J. Millspaugh, R.J. Gutierrez, Mark E. Seamans

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We estimated concentrations of fecal reproductive steroid metabolites in free-ranging California Spotted Owls (Strix occidentalis occidentalis) during the breeding season. We collected fresh fecal samples (n= 142) from 65 individual owls in the Sierra Nevada during April–August of 2001. We developed and validated radioimmunoassay procedures to quantify fecal estrogen metabolites and fecal testosterone metabolites. We used an information- theoretic approach to identify factors that might influence fecal estrogen (E), fecal testosterone (T), and fecal estrogen:testosterone ratio (E:T ratio) levels during the owl’s breeding season. We hypothesized that factors related to sampling procedures, owl characteristics (sex, reproductive …

Deriving In Situ Phytoplankton Absorption For Bio-Optical Productivity Models In Turbid Waters, Christina Orrico, Matthew J. Oliver, Oscar Schofield, Trisha Bergmann, Scott Glenn, Mark A. Moline Jul 2004

Deriving In Situ Phytoplankton Absorption For Bio-Optical Productivity Models In Turbid Waters, Christina Orrico, Matthew J. Oliver, Oscar Schofield, Trisha Bergmann, Scott Glenn, Mark A. Moline

Biological Sciences

As part of Hyperspectral Coupled Ocean Dynamics Experiment, a high-resolution hydrographic and bio-optical data set was collected from two cabled profilers at the Long-Term Ecosystem Observatory (LEO). Upwelling-and downwelling-favorable winds and a buoyant plume from the Hudson River induced large changes in hydrographic and optical structure of the water column. An absorption inversion model estimated the relative abundance of phytoplankton, colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and detritus, as well as the spectral exponential slopes of CDOM and detritus from in situ WET Labs nine-wavelength absorption/attenuation meter (ac-9) absorption data. Derived optical weights were proportional to the parameter concentrations and allowed …

Characterization Of Novel Nitroplatinum(Iv) Complexes For The Treatment Of Cancer, Jeannette Lo Jul 2004

Characterization Of Novel Nitroplatinum(Iv) Complexes For The Treatment Of Cancer, Jeannette Lo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many types of chemotherapeutic agents have been developed to target specific mechanisms within the body that control the progression of cancer, though few have been able to circumvent the existing problems associated with the treatments. The current remedies entail grueling drug regimens and toxic side effects that may undermine the effectiveness of the drugs. Cisplatin, a common nitroplatinum(II) drug widely used to treat a variety of cancers, is administered intravenously and circulates systemically, affecting healthy regions of the body as well. Resistance to cisplatin is increasing and the need for new, less toxic medication must be met for future success …

Cord Blood Cell Therapy For Ischemic Stroke, Martina Vendrame Jul 2004

Cord Blood Cell Therapy For Ischemic Stroke, Martina Vendrame

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Infusion of the "mononuclear fraction" of human cord blood cells (HUCBC), which is composed of immature blood cells and hematopoietic progenitors, is known to reduce neurobehavioral deficits in rats subject to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). When MCAO rats are infused with 106 cells 24 hours after the induction of the stroke, their motor function improves. To extend these findings, we first examined the behavioral recovery of MCAO rats in the presence of increasing doses of HUCBC. The recovery in behavioral performance seen with measurements of spontaneous activity and motor deficits, depended on the amount of cells delivered, with 10 …

Behavioral And Morphological Consequences Of Rearing Florida Largemouth Bass With Non-Elusive Prey, Alpa Patel Wintzer Jul 2004

Behavioral And Morphological Consequences Of Rearing Florida Largemouth Bass With Non-Elusive Prey, Alpa Patel Wintzer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

(1) Hatchery-reared Florida largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides floridanus, feed on inert pellet food while their wild counterparts capture elusive prey. Differences in levels of prey elusivity often mandate the use of alternate methods of prey capture and are accompanied by a related phenotypic change.

(2) This study investigates (a) differences between the prey capture kinematics and strike modes of hatchery and wild juvenile Florida largemouth bass raised on pellets and live prey, and (b) whether elusivity-based variation in prey capture translates to a phenotypic and functional change during skull development.

(3) Analysis of high-speed videography demonstrates that wild bass capture …

Areawide Ipm Project Under Way To Assist Nebraska Wheat Growers, Paul Burgener

Cornhusker Economics

Areawide wheat Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a program of the United States Department of Agriculture - Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS). To implement the program, the USDA-ARS established cooperative agreements with research and extension professionals from five universities: Colorado State University, Kansas State University, Oklahoma State University, Texas A&M University and the University of Nebraska. The four-year implementation phase of this program began in the fall of 2002. The main theme of the program is to collaborate with growers of dryland winter wheat to evaluate and demonstrate non-chemical pest management techniques, with particular emphasis on the management of the Russian …

Polymorphisms Within A Polymorphism: Snps In And Around A Polymorphic Alu Insertion In Intron 44 Of The Human Dystrophin Gene, Alan D. Lovell, Vania Yotova, Fengxia Xiao, Mark A. Batzer, Damian Labuda

Faculty Publications

A polymorphic Yb-type Alu insertion on Xp21.3 shows a genotypic gradient across worldwide populations. We used single strand conformational polymorphism (SSCP), denaturing high-pressure liquid chromatography (DHPLC), and sequencing to characterize the level of polymorphism within this region. Two novel polymorphic sites were found within the Alu insertion itself, and a further seven novel polymorphic sites in the 2-kb flanking region. Our results showed that while DHPLC was more sensitive than SSCP, the limitations of DHPLC included the lack of ability to distinguish between multiple alleles or safely identify mutations on a polymorphic background. We believe that this is the first …

Genetic Diversity Of Peanut (Arachis Hypogaea L.) And Its Wild Relatives Based On The Analysis Of Hypervariable Regions Of The Genome, Marcio De Carvalho Moretzsohn, Mark S. Hopkins, Sharon E. Mitchell, Stephen Kresovich, Jose Francisco Montenegro Valls, Marcio Elias Ferreira

Faculty Publications

Background: The genus Arachis is native to a region that includes Central Brazil and neighboring countries. Little is known about the genetic variability of the Brazilian cultivated peanut (Arachis hypogaea, genome AABB) germplasm collection at the DNA level. The understanding of the genetic diversity of cultivated and wild species of peanut (Arachis spp.) is essential to develop strategies of collection, conservation and use of the germplasm in variety development. The identity of the ancestor progenitor species of cultivated peanut has also been of great interest. Several species have been suggested as putative AA and BB genome donors …

Mean-Field Theory Of Collective Transport With Phase Slips, Karl Saunders, J. M. Schwarz, M. Christina Marchetti, A. Alan Middleton Jul 2004

Mean-Field Theory Of Collective Transport With Phase Slips, Karl Saunders, J. M. Schwarz, M. Christina Marchetti, A. Alan Middleton

Physics

The driven transport of plastic systems in various disordered backgrounds is studied within mean field theory. Plasticity is modeled using nonconvex interparticle potentials that allow for phase slips. This theory most naturally describes sliding charge density waves; other applications include flow of colloidal particles or driven magnetic flux vortices in disordered backgrounds. The phase diagrams exhibit generic phases and phase boundaries, though the shapes of the phase boundaries depend on the shape of the disorder potential. The phases are distinguished by their velocity and coherence: the moving phase generically has finite coherence, while pinned states can be coherent or incoherent. …
