The Catalytic Role Of Glutamate 151 In The Leucine Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica, Krzysztof P. Bzymek, Richard C. Holz

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Glutamate 151 has been proposed to act as the general acid/base during the peptide hydrolysis reaction catalyzed by the co-catalytic metallohydrolase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP). However, to date, no direct evidence has been reported for the role of Glu-151 during catalytic turnover by AAP. In order to elucidate the catalytic role of Glu-151, altered AAP enzymes have been prepared in which Glu-151 has been substituted with a glutamine, an alanine, and an aspartate. The Michaelis constant (Km) does not change upon substitution to aspartate or glutamine, but the rate of the reaction changes drastically in the following …

Waterfowl Population Status, 2004, Pamela R. Garrettson, Timothy J. Moser, Khristi Wilkins

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

In the Breeding Population and Habitat Survey traditional survey area (strata 1-18, 20-50, and 75-77), the total-duck population estimate was 32.2 ± 0.6 (± 1 standard error) million birds, 11% below last year’s estimate of 36.2 ± 0.7 million birds (P<0.001), and 3% below the 1955-2003 long-term average (P=0.053). Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) numbered 7.4 ± 0.3 million, similar to last year’s estimate of 7.9 ± 0.3 million birds (P=0.177) and to the long-term average (P=0.762). Blue-winged teal (A. discors) numbered 4.1 ± 0.2 million, 26% below last year’s estimate of 5.5 ± 0.3 million (P<0.001) and 10% below the long-term average (P …

The Use Of The Socratic Method In A Contemporary High School Classroom In Developing Problem-Solving, Critical Thinking, And Decision Making Skills, Anna Schneider Muessig Jul 2004

The Use Of The Socratic Method In A Contemporary High School Classroom In Developing Problem-Solving, Critical Thinking, And Decision Making Skills, Anna Schneider Muessig

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this action research was to attempt to use a modified approach to the Socratic method in a contemporary high school classroom as a means of developing problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making skills in high school students. The participants in the study were 16 male students and 13 female students from two sections of an eleventh grade Honors English class at a suburban high school in southern New Jersey. These students were selected as a population of convenience during the researcher's Clinical Internship II experience. As a part of regular classroom instruction, the researcher employed a modified form …

Casuistical Connections From Dunton To Defoe, John E. Fossum Jul 2004

Casuistical Connections From Dunton To Defoe, John E. Fossum

Theses and Dissertations

This master's thesis is primarily concerned with the philosophical conditions of late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century England that encouraged the emergence of periodical literature and perpetuated the birth of the novel. While most connections between periodical literature and the novel are made on how the former created the readership that ensured the latter's success, I focus on how the epistemology unique to the advent of empirical science together with the growing prominence of casuistic thought created a space in which periodical literature could emerge and the early novel could flourish. I investigate the underlying assertion of a particular philosophical amalgam …

Biology Faculty Research

Effects of sediment resuspension-induced benthic detrital flux on the heterotrophic part of the microbial food web in Lake Michigan were examined using a three-dimensional (3-D) coupled biological and physical model. The model was driven by the realistic meteorological forcing observed in March 1999. Wind-induced surface wave dynamics were incorporated into the physical model to generate the bottom flux. The model-generated benthic detrital flux was assumed to be proportional to the difference between model-calculated and critical stresses at the bottom. The model results indicate that detrital flux at the bottom was a key factor causing a significant increase of phosphorus and …
