Enhancements To Crisp Possibilistic Reconstructability Analysis, Anas Al-Rabadi, Martin Zwick
Enhancements To Crisp Possibilistic Reconstructability Analysis, Anas Al-Rabadi, Martin Zwick
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
Modified Reconstructibility Analysis (MRA), a novel decomposition within the framework of set-theoretic (crisp possibilistic) Reconstructibility Analysis, is presented. It is shown that in some cases while 3-variable NPN-classified Boolean functions are not decomposable using Conventional Reconstructibility Analysis (CRA), they are decomposable using Modified Reconstructibility Analysis (MRA). Also, it is shown that whenever a decomposition of 3-variable NPN-classified Boolean functions exists in both MRA and CRA, MRA yields simpler or equal complexity decompositions. A comparison of the corresponding complexities for Ashenhurst-Curtis decompositions, and Modified Reconstructibility Analysis (MRA) is also presented. While both AC and MRA decompose some but …

Influence Of Rearrangement Of Actin Cytoskeleton On The Overall Material Properties Of Atdc5 Cells During Chondrogenesis, Madhavi V. S. Ayyalasomayajula
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Studies show that when chondrocytes are cultured in 2D, they lose their phenotype. This change is reversed when the cells are embedded in a 3D culture system such as in agarose gel. Previous experiments in our lab showed that when prechodrocytic cells were embedded in agarose, chondrogenesis was triggered in these cells. This work attempts to understand the mechanical implications of this behavior. It also provides an estimate of the sensitivity of the apparatus that would be required to carry out compression loading experiments of gel-cell constructs that can distinguish between pre-chondrocytes and chondrocytes.;ATDC5 cells were cultured in 3D for …

Impulsivity And Smoking Relapse, Neal Doran, Bonnie Spring, Dennis E. Mcchargue, Michele Pergadia, Malia Richmond
Impulsivity And Smoking Relapse, Neal Doran, Bonnie Spring, Dennis E. Mcchargue, Michele Pergadia, Malia Richmond
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Previous research has shown that elevated trait-impulsivity heightens the risk for initiating tobacco use and indicates that nicotine may be disproportionately rewarding for more impulsive persons. However, the influence of impulsivity on the ability to maintain nicotine abstinence has not been studied. The present study tested the hypothesis that a higher level of trait-impulsivity would predict a more rapid relapse to smoking following 48 hr of nicotine abstinence. Participants were euthymic, regular smokers (N=45), with a history of at least one major depressive episode, who participated in a paid smoking cessation study with biological challenge (tryptophan depletion). Treatment …

The Effects Of A Multimodality Approach On Sentence Production Using Response Elaboration Training With A Reading Component On Aphasic Patients., Sara E. Mccarthy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The effects of a multimodality treatment were investigated using a single subject experimental design across behaviors in two patients with different severity levels of Broca's aphasia. We hypothesized that Response Elaboration Training and an oral reading task would improve accuracy of sentence production, information content, and mean length of utterance. Results indicated that this treatment approach elicited significant improvement in the accuracy of sentence production and information content in the participant with very mild Broca's aphasia. Furthermore, the participant with severe Broca's aphasia demonstrated a very significant improvement in information content and mean length of utterance. The improvements support the …
Transforming The Fairytale: A Diachronic Study Of Utopias Of Popular Romance, Deborah A. Jossart
Transforming The Fairytale: A Diachronic Study Of Utopias Of Popular Romance, Deborah A. Jossart
Theses and Dissertations
Popular romance novels have been examined by a number of critics over the past several decades, but each of these studies has analyzed texts within a fixed, synchronic context. Such analyses, while useful, fail to provide the same depth and breadth of a study of a popular culture genre that combines both synchronic and diachronic approaches. This study evaluates the popular romance novels produced during three distinct historical moments: the early mass-market romance novel, popular during the 1960s and 70s; the contemporary erotic romance novel, produced from the 1980s until currently; and the “chick-lit” sub-genre of popular romance, currently rising …

The Influence Of Menarche On Fathers' Perceptions Of Father-Daughter Relationships, Jennifer L. Mueller
Theses and Dissertations
Adolescence is a time of transformation for a young girl and her relationships with her parents. One way to conceptualize the evolving dynamics between father and adolescent daughter is to use the Circumplex Model of Marital and Family Systems. The purpose of this study is to examine the differences in relationships between fathers and their premenarchal daughters, girls who have not had their first menstrual period, compared to fathers and postmenarchal daughters, girls who have experienced their first menstrual period. The participants completed three questionnaires. The Demographic questionnaire included general demographic questions in order to learn more about the participants. …

The purpose of this 2-part study was to investigate the impact of an international service-learning experience (SOLE) on physical therapy (PT) students. The quantitative component compared outcomes relating to civic attitude, interpersonal and problem-solving skills, political awareness, leadership skills, social justice attitudes, and diversity attitudes of PT students who participated in the SOLE to PT students who did not participate. The qualitative portion asked the following questions: 1) What beliefs and attitudes did PT students gain from an international service-learning experience? and 2) Did an international service-learning experience assist the PT student in assuming the role of a servant leader? …
Chaotic Price Dynamics Of Agricultural Commodities, Jeff B. Cromwell
Chaotic Price Dynamics Of Agricultural Commodities, Jeff B. Cromwell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Traditionally, commodity prices have been analyzed and modeled in the context of linear generating processes. The purpose of this dissertation is to address the adequacy of this work through examination of the critical assumption of independence in the residual process of linearly specified models. As an alternative, a test procedure is developed and utilized to demonstrate the appropriateness of applying generalized conditional heteroscedastic time series models (GARCH) to agricultural commodity prices. In addition, a distinction is made between testing for independence and testing for chaos in commodity prices. The price series of interest derive from the major international agricultural commodity …
Application Of Turning Point Theory To Communication Following An Acquired Disability, Katie Neary Dunleavy
Application Of Turning Point Theory To Communication Following An Acquired Disability, Katie Neary Dunleavy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Interpersonal relationships are affected when one relational partner acquires a disability. The acquisition of the disability is considered a turning point and the interest of this study is what occurs after the turning point. In particular, this study investigated the satisfaction, emotional support and solidarity of those who have acquired a disability in their life and one of their able-bodied relational partners. The stages of adjustment to a disability were also quantitatively analyzed. Both the participants who acquired a disability and their relational partners completed self-report measures. Difficulties in obtaining participants led to descriptive results. Challenges to a small participant …
Pentosidine As A Biomarker For Age In Birds And Museum-Prepared Study Skins, Jesse A. Fallon
Pentosidine As A Biomarker For Age In Birds And Museum-Prepared Study Skins, Jesse A. Fallon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The phenomenon of aging is progressive, irreversible and universal to all living things. One unavoidable outcome of aging is the modification of proteins by sugars, which, through a non-enzymatic process, can lead to the formation of crosslinked compounds termed advanced glycation endproducts. One such endproduct, pentosidine (Ps), is an indicator, or biomarker, of biological age. Because most birds have no reliable markers of age beyond adulthood, this investigation examines the accumulation of Ps as an estimator of chronological age in birds. The first study herein examines interspecies comparison of Ps accumulation in Ruffed grouse and Double-crested cormorants. The second investigates …
Precautions Against What? The Availability Heuristic And Cross-Cultural Risk Perceptions, Cass R. Sunstein
Precautions Against What? The Availability Heuristic And Cross-Cultural Risk Perceptions, Cass R. Sunstein
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
Because risks are all on sides of social situations, it is not possible to be globally "precautionary." Hence the Precautionary Principle runs into serious conceptual difficulties; any precautions will themselves create hazards of one or another kind. When the principle gives guidance, it is often because of the availability heuristic, which can make some risks stand out as particularly salient, whatever their actual magnitude. The same heuristic helps to explain differences across groups, cultures, and even nations in the perception of risks, especially when linked with such social processes as cascades and group polarization. One difficulty here is that what …

Prevalence Of Teleological And Lamarckian Misconceptions Of Natural Selection Among College Students, Bryce T. Battisti
Prevalence Of Teleological And Lamarckian Misconceptions Of Natural Selection Among College Students, Bryce T. Battisti
Theses and Dissertations
Science teachers and researchers note that students must correctly understand the role of natural selection in evolution to make sense of biology. The level of understanding of natural selection can be assessed using the Conceptual Inventory of Natural Selection (CINS) which is a 20-item multiple-choice test that incorporates student misconceptions as distractors. In the present study, Item Response Theory (IRT) was used to analyze the occurance of misconceptions on the CINS among 1192 students in an introductory non-majors biology course. The four most difficult topics in the CINS are: (a) how change occurs in a population; (b) origin of variation; …
Integrating Pollution Prevention Measures In Trails Along Waterways, Rosemary C. Kamei
Integrating Pollution Prevention Measures In Trails Along Waterways, Rosemary C. Kamei
Master's Projects
There has been a tremendous increase in the interest of developing watershed protection and trails in Santa Clara County over the last few years. The idea that trails and environmental protection can add greater dimension to the quality of life is well understood by many who call Silicon Valley home. This has been demonstrated by the local support of residents who have committed to pay additional assessments to provide for such amenities as open space, parks and trails, as well as for the preservation and restoration of the environment. Additional community support for watershed stewardship and environmental protection has also …
The Effects Of Predator Presence On Nectarivorous Bat Foraging Behavior, August 2004, Rachael Heuer
The Effects Of Predator Presence On Nectarivorous Bat Foraging Behavior, August 2004, Rachael Heuer
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
For many species, predator avoidance changes normal foraging behavior, altering optimal foraging strategies. In this study, foraging behavior of bats was examined by observing the number of feeding visits to control feeders in comparison to feeders with an artificial snake or owl in close proximity. Trials were also performed between snake and owl treatments to determine if one predator was more strongly avoided during feeding. Nectarivorous bats were found to exhibit predator avoidance behaviors for both snake and owl predators (P < 0.0001, P < 0.0001). There was no significant difference in trials comparing owl and snake avoidance, suggesting that bats do not fear one more than the other (P = 0.947). This study shows that predator presence must be taken into account along with search time, handling time, and caloric reward when evaluating optimal foraging models with necatarivorous bats.
Response To Changes In Location Of Nectar Source By Xylophanes Acrus (Sphyngidae) As A Measure Of “Spatial Memory”, August 2004, James T. Murphy
Response To Changes In Location Of Nectar Source By Xylophanes Acrus (Sphyngidae) As A Measure Of “Spatial Memory”, August 2004, James T. Murphy
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Moths in the family Sphyngidae are known to expend a considerable amount of energy in locating food resources. Considering the high investment of energy required to locate food resources within large areas, a valuable adaptation to aid in more efficiently locating resources might be the ability to “remember” resource locations in order to relocate them when necessary. The purpose of this study was to determine how Xylophanes acrus would respond to sensory cues and if these responses indicated an ability to develop a “spatial memory” for locations of nectar sources. Xylophanes acrus responses to artificial nectar sources were elicited using …

The Effect Of Abiotic Factors On The Distribution Of Cerrorchestia Hyloraina (Taltridae) Above And Below The Monteverde Cheese Factory, August 2004, Vanessa Cervantes
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Taltrid amphipods are terrestrial crustaceans known to favor moist habitats and feed off of decaying matter. They have been found infesting caves, beaches, and garden leaf litter. Within the past three years, the Cerrorchestia hyloraina (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Taltridae) population local to the Monteverde area has exploded due to changes in unknown biotic and/or abiotic factors. Three abiotic factors (distance from river, soil moisture, and temperature) were tested at two different sites: one above and one below the Monteverde Cheese Factory (MCF). Taltrid density was significantly higher below (251.800 ± 170.811 taltrids/trap) the MCF than above (1.619 ± 1.910 taltrids/trap, Mann-Whitney …
Dung Beetle Response In Relationship To Manure Location, August 2004, Margaret Quinn
Dung Beetle Response In Relationship To Manure Location, August 2004, Margaret Quinn
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Dung beetle ecology is an integral part of nutrient cycling within ecosystems around the world. Farms benefit from the decomposer action of dung beetles from the nutrients imputed into the soil and the breakdown of helminthes parasites. This study analyzed the effects of varying dung location within pastures on dung beetle response. It was hypothesized that cow manure closer to forest edges would elicit a greater response than manure located further away. Also, manure located near an edge would elicit a greater beetle response overall when compared to manure in the middle of the pasture. Three pastures located in San …
Fruit Species Preference In Mountain Robins (Turdus Plebejus), August 2004, Leah Bomberger
Fruit Species Preference In Mountain Robins (Turdus Plebejus), August 2004, Leah Bomberger
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The Mountain Robin (Turdus plebejus, Turdidae) (in the Monteverde region in Costa Rica) is an opportunistic feeder and an important disperser for many plant species. This study examined fruit preference of the Mountain Robin between three species of plants: Viburnum costaricanum, Chamaedorea costaricana, and Chamaedorea pinnatifrons. A significant preference was found for C. costaricana over C. pinnatifrons (P = 0.040). These results indicate that C. costaricana offers a higher reward and may attract more dispersers than C. pinnatifrons or V. costaricana.
Nocturnal Vs. Diurnal Insect Diversity Within Tropical Montane Forest Canopy, August 2004, Michael Rosenthal
Nocturnal Vs. Diurnal Insect Diversity Within Tropical Montane Forest Canopy, August 2004, Michael Rosenthal
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Tropical forest canopies are unique environments with complex interactions, allowing for high levels of specialization for insects. The purpose of this study was to test whether increased specialization has created differences in species richness and diversity between nocturnal and diurnal canopy insects. To test this, insects were collected from six trees using suspended traps containing three types of bait (carrion, rotten fruit, and specific scents that attract euglossine bees). Diversity and species richness was quantified for diurnal and nocturnal traps of all three baits and for total number of insects collected diurnally and nocturnally. The results showed that on all …
A Lesson On Symbiotic Interactions For The Centro De Educación Creativa, August 2004, Melissa Reimer
A Lesson On Symbiotic Interactions For The Centro De Educación Creativa, August 2004, Melissa Reimer
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Symbiotic interactions represent the complexity of the functions of tropical ecosystems. Many of these symbiotic interactions are found in the cloud forest. In order to educate students about the importance of these interactions, research was conducted on symbiotic interactions found in the Monteverde area and a lesson plan was created. This lesson plan was created for Centro de Educación Creativa (C.E.C.) a private school in Monteverde, intended for integration into the 6th grade theme four titled “Ecosystem and Relationships in Nature.” It consists of a three-day series of lessons addressing the symbiotic interactions that occur in the cloud forest, including …
