Local And Regional Impairment Of Fish Assemblages In A Mined Appalachian Watershed, Jason Gregory Freund Aug 2004

Local And Regional Impairment Of Fish Assemblages In A Mined Appalachian Watershed, Jason Gregory Freund

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

I used the Cheat River watershed, West Virginia, as a model system to examine the regional impacts of extensive localized stream impairment. Acid mine drainage (AMD) in the Cheat River watershed provided a unique opportunity to test the hypothesis that regional biological condition can be impacted through multiple local sources of degradation. Acid mine drainage is the result of the interaction among pyrite-rich coal, oxygen, and water. This interaction produces a solution that is generally low in pH and buffering capacity and high in heavy metals and sulfate and is toxic to aquatic life. Acid mine drainage also has the …

Non-Specific Stress Indicators And Growth Efficiency In The Archaic And Mississippian At The Perry Site (1 Lu25) In Northwestern Alabama, Robin Wiebe Aug 2004

Non-Specific Stress Indicators And Growth Efficiency In The Archaic And Mississippian At The Perry Site (1 Lu25) In Northwestern Alabama, Robin Wiebe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Porotic hyperostosis, linear enamel hypoplasias and adult stature are all nonspecific indicators of stress. When studied together, they provide an understanding of the long-term survival of periods of stress occurring in varying stages of the life of an individual. Because the Perry Site contains both Archaic and Mississippian components, it provides a unique opportunity to examine not only how these indicators interact, but also how interactions may change across time and subsistence base. Most studies show increases in frequency of porotic hyperostosis and linear enamel hypoplasias and a decrease in adult stature with a shift to agriculture. The Perry material …

Bias In Perceptions Of Parenting Roles: Analysis Of Gender And Socioeconomic Status, Krislea E. Wegner Aug 2004

Bias In Perceptions Of Parenting Roles: Analysis Of Gender And Socioeconomic Status, Krislea E. Wegner

Theses and Dissertations

After industrialization in the United States, men primarily moved from the farm to the workplace, leaving women responsible for the children and maintaining the household alone. This arrangement contributed to the so called "tender years" doctrine, which suggested that mothers were better caretakers of the children and should therefore receive sole custody. The preference for mothers continued until the 1960's, after the women's liberation movement, when a large portion of women moved from the home into the workforce. State statutes were later changed to establish gender-neutrality for the purposes of determining custody decisions and suggested the custody of children should …

Research-Supported Professional Development Perceptions Of K-12 Educators Of Self-Determined Professional Development Needs, Robert T. Grosz

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the degree of involvement of K-12 educators in a Minnesota district in research-supported professional development (RSPD), to determine the perceived needs for future professional development of the same K-12 educators, and to determine whether recent participation in RSPD activities, areas, and approaches impacted the K-12 educators perceived professional development needs and/or wants.

Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was conducted to determine what differences existed in the recent involvement in RSPD activities, areas, and approaches compared by the variables; gender, years of experience as a classroom teacher, current teaching level, and current education …

The Lesbian Connection: The Negotiation Of Individualism In A Unique Community, Emily E. Lenning Aug 2004

The Lesbian Connection: The Negotiation Of Individualism In A Unique Community, Emily E. Lenning

Masters Theses

This research explores the issue of how individualism is situated within and expressed through a progressive, alternative, and constitutive community. The Lesbian Connection, a lesbian owned and operated publication, will be considered as it relates to the individual-focused dialogue that recent radical theorists claim to be of great importance to the formation of "ideal" communities. Content analysis will be used to investigate how lesbians choose to shape their own community identity while maintaining a sense of personal individualism. Additional attention will be afforded to how lesbians use interaction through text to shape community norms and identify common goals.

Mechanism Of Chromium Reduction Of Benzo[A]Pyrene Diolepoxide Mutagenesis In Human Fibroblasts, Cara Suzanne Kriss Aug 2004

Mechanism Of Chromium Reduction Of Benzo[A]Pyrene Diolepoxide Mutagenesis In Human Fibroblasts, Cara Suzanne Kriss

Masters Theses

Environmental agents can cause an increase in cellular stress and damage DNA which can lead to diseases such as cancer. Chromium produces cellular stress by increasing the reactive oxygen species through a Fenton-like reaction, where chromium reacts with hydrogen peroxide to form hydroxyl radicals. Benzo[ a ]pyrene is an environmental carcinogen that is metabolized by cytochrome p450 enzymes into benzo[a]pyrene diolepoxide (BPDE). BPDE is highly reactive with DNA producing large DNA-adducts primarily on guanine nucleotides. The primary intracellular pathway by which mammalian cells remove damaged DNA caused by bulky mutagens is nucleotide excision repair. We have found that, in BPDE …

Pf15p Is The Chlamydomonas Homologue Of The Katanin P80 Subunit And Is Required For Assembly Of Flagellar Central Microtubules, Erin E. Dymek, Paul A. Lefebvre, Elizabeth F. Smith Aug 2004

Pf15p Is The Chlamydomonas Homologue Of The Katanin P80 Subunit And Is Required For Assembly Of Flagellar Central Microtubules, Erin E. Dymek, Paul A. Lefebvre, Elizabeth F. Smith

Dartmouth Scholarship

Numerous studies have indicated that the central apparatus plays a significant role in regulating flagellar motility, yet little is known about how the central pair of microtubules or their associated projections assemble. Several Chlamydomonas mutants are defective in central apparatus assembly. For example, mutant pf15 cells have paralyzed flagella that completely lack the central pair of microtubules. We have cloned the wild-type PF15 gene and confirmed its identity by rescuing the motility and ultrastructural defects in two pf15 alleles, the original pf15a mutant and a mutant generated by insertional mutagenesis. Database searches using the 798-amino-acid polypeptide predicted from the complete …

The Effectiveness Of The Mountain Robin (Turdus Plebejus) As A Seed Disperser In The Monteverde Area, August 2004, Sean Brady Aug 2004

The Effectiveness Of The Mountain Robin (Turdus Plebejus) As A Seed Disperser In The Monteverde Area, August 2004, Sean Brady

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Quantitative and qualitative factors are important in determining the effectiveness with which bird species disperse seeds. This study examined several factors that may influence the quantitative component of dispersal in the mountain robin. Regurgitation times of three common fruits in the area were examined. Additionally, the size at which seeds transition from being regurgitated to defecated was studied. Results show that regurgitation times between these three fruits do not differ significantly. However, there was a significant difference in the size of regurgitated (X = 5.97 mm ± 2.17 mm) and defecated seeds (X = 4.25 mm ± 2.55 mm) (t …

Perceptions Of Monteverde Youth (14-18 Years Of Age) Towards Pro- And Anti-Tobacco Advertising In Costa Rica, August 2004, Joanne Lee, Sandra Oh, Diana Oliva, Susan Walker, Myriam Scally Aug 2004

Perceptions Of Monteverde Youth (14-18 Years Of Age) Towards Pro- And Anti-Tobacco Advertising In Costa Rica, August 2004, Joanne Lee, Sandra Oh, Diana Oliva, Susan Walker, Myriam Scally

Monteverde Institute: Culture, Community, and Health

A study on the youth perceptions of tobacco advertising in the Monteverde region of Costa Rica. Although health risks associated with tobacco use are well documented in the world, tobacco companies continue to seek new smokers to increase sales. As a result, youth have been one of the main targets of tobacco advertising because smokers usually begin smoking in their teen years. This study focused on the youth perceptions of tobacco advertising in the Monteverde region of Costa Rica. Our hypothesis states that while pro-tobacco advertisements attract the attention of youth (between ages 14 and 18 years) to become smokers …

Harvest Restrictions For Soybean Herbicides, Leon Wrage, Darrell Deneke Aug 2004

Harvest Restrictions For Soybean Herbicides, Leon Wrage, Darrell Deneke

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Weather conditions have prompted inquiries about forage use or grazing of treated fields. If early-season conditions indicate that the crop may be used for forage, consider the following restrictions when selecting herbicides. Some herbicides are lacking residue data, and, therefore, are not approved for haying or grazing.

Corn Herbicide Restriction Forage Or Grazing Dry Conditions, Leon J. Wrage, Darrell L. Deneke Aug 2004

Corn Herbicide Restriction Forage Or Grazing Dry Conditions, Leon J. Wrage, Darrell L. Deneke

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Dry conditions may change intended crop use plans. The need for forage may be critical. Several herbicides have a minimum interval between application and crop use for forage or grazing. Tolerances are based on data for intervals shown in the table below. An interval of 30 to 40 days is not likely to be a factor limiting the use of corn for silage. For most fields, a 30 to 40 day requirement will be met by late July or early August. Tolerances for forage or grazing must be established before crop use for these purposes can be recommended. Refer to …

Vegetation Characteristics Associated With Small Mammal Populations In The Las Vegas Wash, Christine Therese Herndon Aug 2004

Vegetation Characteristics Associated With Small Mammal Populations In The Las Vegas Wash, Christine Therese Herndon

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Percent litter, average litter depth, percent bare ground, vegetation density, vegetation canopy, and distance to an ecotone boundary were measured and compared to small mammal capture locations in the Las Vegas Wash. Neotoma lepida appear to be greatly dependent upon the foliage litter of T. ramosissima. Alternatively, ecotone boundaries appear to be the most important factor affecting Dipodomys merriami distributions. Peromyscus eremicus distributions may be predicted based on vegetation density and increased canopy during shorter, winter torpor periods. Chaetodipus penicillatus were consistently associated with dense, seed-bearing vegetation, although C. penicillatus is extremely opportunistic and vegetation density should not limit their …

Combatiendo El Stress Calórico En La Vaca Lechera, Alvaro D. Garcia Aug 2004

Combatiendo El Stress Calórico En La Vaca Lechera, Alvaro D. Garcia

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Alimentación Y Manejode Becerras Y Vaquillas Lecheras, David J. Schingoethe, Alvaro Garcia

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The Network Economic Effects Of Whiteness, Brant T. Lee Aug 2004

The Network Economic Effects Of Whiteness, Brant T. Lee

Akron Law Faculty Publications

In this Essay I demonstrate that a network economic analysis of race provides an important and intuitive explanation of racial inequality. In short, Whiteness is Microsoft's Windows operating system, or the QWERTY keyboard, or the standard (non-metric) measurement system, and it is difficult to dislodge for many of the same reasons. Network effects explain how (1) the establishment of a dominant market standard can be contingent on historical context, and it is not necessarily derived from superior intrinsic merit, and (2) a dominant standard exhibits strong self-reinforcing characteristics that can maintain the dominance of the standard in perpetuity, even in …

Constructions Of Female Identities In Mary Gordon's The Other Side And Maureen Howard's Before My Time, Neli Gogovska Aug 2004

Constructions Of Female Identities In Mary Gordon's The Other Side And Maureen Howard's Before My Time, Neli Gogovska

Theses and Dissertations

In Women's Time Kristeva designates three broad currents of feminist struggle: first, the suffragist movement declaring a universalist view of women's experience regardless of class, age, and cultures; second, the phase of difference, that she regards as "returning to an archaic (mythic) memory as well as cyclical or monumental temporality of marginal movements" (355); and third, a trend that she wholeheartedly supports for their concept that "the dichotomy of man and woman as an opposition of two rival entities is a problem of metaphysics" (366).

This thesis discusses Howard and Gordon as proponents of the second phase because they write …

Exploring The Relationship Between Race-Related Stress, Identity And Well-Being Among African Americans, Darrick Tovar-Murray Aug 2004

Exploring The Relationship Between Race-Related Stress, Identity And Well-Being Among African Americans, Darrick Tovar-Murray

Dissertations

For almost four hundred years, African Americans have been victims of race-related stress. Race-related stress is defined as the encounters between individuals and their environment that surface from racism and strain an individual's resources or threaten his or her well-being. Despite findings on the negative impact of racism on African Americans' well-being, very little research has focused on the relationships between race-related stress, identity and well-being among African Americans.

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between race-related stress, identity, and well-being among African Americans. A total of 196 African American community members and college students participated …

Negative Stereotypes And Childhood Paternal Relationships As Predictors Of Paternal Identity In African American Fathers, Danielle K. Wright Aug 2004

Negative Stereotypes And Childhood Paternal Relationships As Predictors Of Paternal Identity In African American Fathers, Danielle K. Wright

Dissertations

African American men have been widely ignored in the social science literature. When African American men have been studied, it has primarily been from a deficit model. The purpose of this study was to give voice to the African American father, whether he is working-poor, middle-class, or upper-class, biological or non-biological, residential or non-residential. The intent of the study was to explore how African American men view themselves as fathers and their own experiences of being a parent.

One hundred and one men who identified as African American, were at least 18 years old, and who had at least one …
