Physical Oceanography Technical Reports

Observations were conducted from June 1999 to July 2001 to study the shallow and deep current variability in the southwest Japan/East Sea. Data were collected during the field experiment with a two-dimensional array of pressure-gauge equipped inverted echo sounders (PIES) and deep recording current meters (RCM). The collection, processing and calibration of the PIES are documented in this report. Descriptions of the processes used to identify and remove jumps (offsets) in the pressure and travel time records, that resulted when the instruments were jostled or moved by deep crab-fishing activities in the Japan/East Sea, are given. Data Summary From The Tampa Bay Interagency Seagrass Monitoring Program Through Year 2003, Walt Avery, Roger Johansson

Reports

Results regarding seagrass species abundance, distribution, and zonation over time are presented for the 1997-2003 period in Hillsborough Bay (HB, Figures 15-26) and the 1998-2003 period for Old Tampa Bay (OTB, Figures 3-14), Middle Tampa Bay (MTB, Figures 28-40), Lower Tampa Bay, including Terra Ceia Bay (LTB, Figures 41-56), and Boca Ciega Bay (BCB, Figures 57-68). For each transect, results are presented in a graphic format illustrating annual species composition, abundance, and distribution. Seagrass abundance is presented as percent coverage within a square meter using the Braun Blanquet coverage class system.

Detection Of Clostridium Botulinum Type C Cells In The Gastrointestinal Tracts Of Mozambique Tilapia (Oreochromis Mossambicus) By Polymerase Chain Reaction, P. Nol, J.L. Williamson, T.E. Rocke, T.M. Yuill

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We established a method of directly detecting Clostridium botulinum type C cells, while minimizing spore detection, in the intestinal contents of Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus). This technique involved extraction of predominantly cellular DNA from tilapia intestinal tracts and used a polymerase chain reaction assay to detect presence of type C₁ toxin gene. We consistently detected C. botulinum type C cells in tilapia gastrointestinal contents at a level of 7.5310⁴ cells per 0.25 g material or 1.9310³ cells. This technique is useful for determining prevalence of the potentially active organisms within a given population of fish …

This essay is concerned with women and their educational experience in an Honors Program, and with their educational choices. It deals briefly with the history of women in higher education in the Western world and in the light of this history compares WWU Honors women with historical trends, with men and women students in the institution, and with students nationally in terms of major choices and career aspirations. Noncredit English as a Second Language (ESL) classes often serve as a starting place for new immigrants aged eighteen or older who want to learn "survival English." The students attending these classes are widely diverse in terms of motivations, educational and cultural backgrounds, English-language fluency, life experiences, and learning styles. Classes are designed to equip these adult learners with basic English-language abilities in the context of the situations they are likely to encounter daily at work and in the community. Family, Peer, And Acculturative Correlates Of Prosocial Development Among Latinos, Maria Rosario T. De Guzman, Gustavo Carlo

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The present study was designed to examine the roles of family cohesion and adaptability, parent and peer attachment, and acculturation in predicting prosocial behavior tendencies in Latino adolescents from Nebraska, A total of 63 Latinos (M age = 14.52 years) from Lincoln, NE, completed measures of acculturation, parent and peer attachment, family adaptability and cohesion, and tendencies to perform prosocial behaviors. Results of a series of multiple regression analyses suggest that acculturation negatively predicted pro social behavior tendencies (i.e., the higher the level of acculturation, the lower the tendency to perform prosocial acts). Seeking Coherence And Integrity: Personal And Professional Demands And Expectations Of Senior Women Professors, Florence A. Hamrick, Mimi Benjamin

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

This study of 26 senior women professors at a large research university suggests that, while their negotiation of professional and personal commitments involved calculated balancing acts and strategies, they primarily described searches for integrity and coherence in life. More effective personal management strategies, modified and more realistic expectations, and a refusal to dwell on past decisions were among the themes identified. Respondents described an almost uniform and longstanding self-sufficiency and acknowledged having more control over aspects of their work, lives, and time. However, for many, time was also increasingly spent on some level of attention to health, and retirement preparation.

The Effects Of Gender And Regional Dialect On Performance In Aviation Communication, Erin E. Mccollum

The purpose of this study was to analyze the performance effects of gender and regional dialect on air traffic control statement recall. Sixty-one student volunteers participated in the experiment. Thirty-one participants held a pilot’s license and 30 participants had no flight experience. Each participant listened to one CD with 60 ATC statements each representing a male and female voice and New England, Southern, and General American dialect. Participants were asked to recall exactly what they heard. If the participant could not understand what they heard, they requested a repeat. A single tube, fluorogenic probe-based, real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (Q-RT-PCR) assay was developed for detection and quantitation of bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) using BioRad’s iCycler iQ™. Real-time Q-RT-PCR was compared with quantitative competitive RT-PCR (QC-RT-PCR) and viral titers. Viral mRNA levels were measured in BRSV-infected bovine turbinate cell lysate harvested at eight time points (1.5, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72 h) post-infection. A homologous BRSV cRNA standard was used for quantitation of the mRNA by plotting a standard curve of cycle threshold (Ct) values versus standard 10-fold dilutions of cRNA of known concentrations. Leader-member exchange (LMX) generally refers to the leadership process centered on the interactions between leaders and direct reports. The basic premise of high quality leader-member exchange relationships holds that direct reports gain tremendous benefits through these partnerships. LMX is perhaps the most commonly researched theory of leadership. However, few studies have specifically examined the role of dyad members’ sex as a predictor of quality LMX.
