Service Learning Through The High School Pyramid Model: A Case Study, Fawzia Al-Rashid, Kenyon Walker Jan 2004

Service Learning Through The High School Pyramid Model: A Case Study, Fawzia Al-Rashid, Kenyon Walker

School K-12

The intellectual and philosophical roots of service learning have been attributed to the conceptualizations of democratic society put forth by Alexis de Tocqueville in the 1830s and John Dewey in the early twentieth century (Kenny eta!, 2002). Dewey believed that students would learn more effectively and eventually become better citizens if they engaged in activities that linked service to the community and the curriculum. This idea of linking service to curriculum has been further embraced by advocates of service learning today.

In Search Of A Theory Of Cult And Freedom Of Religion In China: The Case Of Falun Gong, Anne S.Y. Cheung

Washington International Law Journal

Cult and anti-cult movements have been high drama ever since the close of the twentieth century. The tragedies caused by some minority religious groups and the corresponding government responses force us to question the meaning of freedom of religion and to confront our societal conviction to upholding our acclaimed constitutional values. This Article examines the fundamental concept of freedom of religion and the tights that it entails in the case of the People's Republic of China. China's recent crackdown on Falun Gong, a seemingly benign breathing exercise group, has been bitterly controversial. The case of Falun Gong illustrates that the …

Analisa Perilaku Rumah Tangga: Preferensi, Fertilitas, Alokasi Waktu Dan Tawar Menawar, Teguh Yudo Wicaksono

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

Economic scholars in Indonesia tends to focus more on market rather than household behavior. This could be caused by their assumption that household behavior often irrational from conventional economic perspective. This paper argues that irrationality behavior is not proven empirically. It is shown that the behavior is economic deterministic; like preference on their child's gender, time allocation and bargaining process in household. The result shows that females are more preferred than males and this can be explained by economic logic. Nevertheless, position and bargaining power of females still weak in household. It has proven empirically by some estimation methods with …

It offers a brief overview of the current threats to privacy from sources other than the government, and, in particular, the impact of the Internet in creating or magnifying those threats. Part I discusses the threat to privacy in general, examining how the Internet and developments in surveillance technology, in information storage and retrieval, in dissemination of information, sound, and images, and changes to the informal "social contract" that defines general standards have all …

Nursing Practice In A Magnet Hospital: A Descriptive Study, Kathleen M. Stolzenberger Jan 2004

Nursing Practice In A Magnet Hospital: A Descriptive Study, Kathleen M. Stolzenberger

Open Access Dissertations

The organizational context of hospital nursing practice has gained international attention as a growing body of research demonstrates its significance as a factor affecting the supply and performance of registered nurses and the quality of patient care. Studies of organizations designated by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as magnet hospitals demonstrate significant and positive relationships among organizational, nurse, and patient variables. However, knowledge about the nursing work environment as an influence on practice is limited by the absence of studies exploring the actual practice of staff nurses and the nursing unit as the more immediate context in which it …

Prolegomenon To The Literary Study Of Hypertext, Edward Steven Shear

Open Access Dissertations

CATHOLICISM AND AMERICAN FREEDOM: A HISTORY. By John T. McGreevy. New York and London: W.W. Norton & Co. 2003. Pp. 431. $26.95.

John T. McGreevy's Catholicism and American Freedom tells the story of how America or, more particularly, American liberalism has reacted and responded to Catholic claims about the nature and purpose of freedom. It also addresses how these claims were, in turn, shaped by Catholicism's own interactions with, internal conversations about, and adjustment to American liberalism. As McGreevy shows, for many people and for many years, the Roman Catholic Church served as a foil for American values and …
