Mentoring: A Model For The Future Nurturing Of Culinary Talent, Mairtin Mac Con Iomaire

Conference papers

Should time be invested in nurturing the next generation of Culinarians in order to improve the profession? Is fear and intimidation acceptable in a professional kitchen? Can we identify the reasons behind the high levels of staff turnover? What is mentoring? In this paper I hope to address these questions, and to discuss mentoring as a model for nurturing culinary talent. I draw upon both personal experiences and those of students who have experienced mentoring as part of the Professional Internship Module of the BA in Culinary Arts in the Dublin Institute of Technology to support my position. I propose …

The Impact Of Telework On Performance: A Social Network Approach, Priscilla Arling Jan 2004

The Impact Of Telework On Performance: A Social Network Approach, Priscilla Arling

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Despite almost thirty years of research in the area of telework, the findings regarding outcomes remain equivocal (Bailey and Kurland, 2002). This research in progress hopes to advance understanding by identifying a key mechanism by which telework affects performance, specifically its influence on the social network properties of cohesion, power and structural holes. With knowledge of how the number, frequency and diversity of relationships influences performance, practitioners and academics can develop processes to improve teleworker social networks. This in turn will enhance the use of social capital and also facilitate shared attitudes and behaviors, which will lead to higher organizational …

Keeping The City Totally Clean: Yellow Fever And The Politics Of Prevention In Colonial Saint-Louis-Du-Senegal, 1850-1914, Kalala J. Ngalamulume

History Faculty Research and Scholarship

This article explores the ways in which French colonial authorities met the life and death challenge. represented by the re-emergence of yellow fever epidemics in Saint-Louis-du-Senegal at a time when physicians knew very. little about the etiology, diagnosis, transmission and treatment of most infectious and parasitic diseases. The discussion focuses on changing strategies and policies designed to address yellow fever threats, the attitudes and priorities of the authorities, the limits of 'colonial medicine' and the responses of. people affected by sanitary measures. The article argues that because of the ignorance of the etiology and epidemiology of yellow fever, policies were …

Sociology Faculty Research and Scholarship

This article seeks to broaden understanding of issues and controversies addressed in social science research on women's and gender studies by researchers and activists based in English-speaking sub-Saharan Africa. The topics covered were selected from those ratified by African women in the Africa Platform for Action in 1995 as well as from current debates on the politics of identity. In addition, the authors address theoretical and methodological trends. All four coauthors are feminist sociologists: One scholar is …

Faith And Public Life: Faith-Based Community Organizing And The Development Of Congregations, Mary Ann Ford Flaherty, Richard L. Wood

Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications

The Congregational Development Research Study (CDRS) examines the impact of faith-based community organizing on organizational development in its primary institutional sponsors— religious congregations. That is, we study whether and how congregational development results from the particular form of civic engagement sometimes known as congregation-based, institutional, or broad-based organizing, and termed here faith-based community organizing.'

The Fair City Production Line: An Examination Of Soap Opera’S Potential Contribution To The Public Sphere, Edward Brennan Jan 2004

The Fair City Production Line: An Examination Of Soap Opera’S Potential Contribution To The Public Sphere, Edward Brennan

Articles

Between December 2000 and February 2001 the Irish soap opera Fair City ran an unprecedented, risky and controversial abortion storyline. This came before a looming referendum on the legality of abortion. Here, Fair City was not just offering entertainment, but provoking debate and discussion on a divisive issue in Irish society. In this case, and many others, it appears that soap opera, by promoting such discussion, may contribute to the formation of public opinion in contemporary civil society. Heretofore, most academic studies have overlooked the possible consequences of soap opera for civil society, public opinion and the democratic process. This …

The Future Of Sustainable Development: A European Perspective, Ruth Kelly Jan 2004

The Future Of Sustainable Development: A European Perspective, Ruth Kelly

Articles

We are living in times of turbulence and complex changes without precedent in history. It is becoming increasingly evident that humans are an intrinsic component of nature in that their actions affect both the biotic and abiotic environments, and are in turn affected by everything that shapes those environments. In evolutionary terms, population growth, societal restructuring, exhaustion of natural resources and technological advancements have usually been so slow as to be indiscernible during an individual lifetime. However, in the past two centuries the global economy has shown exponential growth, transforming the character of the planet and especially of human life …

Home And Homelessness In The Middle Of Nowhere, William I. Miller Jan 2004

Home And Homelessness In The Middle Of Nowhere, William I. Miller

Book Chapters

In Iceland one must have a home; it is an offense not to-in some circumstances, a capital offense. A sturdy beggar was liable for full outlawry, which meant he could be killed with impunity. The laws are hard on vagrants. Fornication with a beggar woman was unactionable; it was lawful to castrate a vagabond, and he had no claim if he were injured or killed during the operation. One could take in beggars solely for the purpose of whipping them, nor was one to feed or shelter them at the Thing on pain of lesser outlawry. Their booths at the …

All Party Oireachtas Committee On The Constitution Ninth Progress Report, Tom Dunne Jan 2004

All Party Oireachtas Committee On The Constitution Ninth Progress Report, Tom Dunne

Reports

Ireland, like many other countries with high rates of economic growth, is urbanising rapidly. There has been considerable emphasis on planning for this through the National Development Plan, the National Spatial Strategy, development guidelines and other measures. Through these the state intends that a proper planning process will lead growth rather than leaving it to market forces to drive development in what are regarded as undesirable directions. The latter it is feared will lead to unsuitable social, economic or physical outcomes. Unintended results have flowed from the implementation, or flawed implementation of many of these policies and have given rise …

Participatory Research And Service-Learning: A Natural Match For The Community And Campus, Robert Blundo Jan 2004

Participatory Research And Service-Learning: A Natural Match For The Community And Campus, Robert Blundo

Higher Education

Integrating academic content and service in the community brought my students a sense of connectedness between classroom learning and their personal lives and the lives of others within the larger community. This is the intent of service-learning, and like many other efforts at service-learning, this experience once again engaged students in terms of academic learning as well as affirming their connectedness to the larger community (Stanton, Giles, & Cruz, 1999). How we as faculty can create a setting for this to occur is always challenging and exciting in terms of the unique and creative ways faculty are making these connections …

Service-Learning In Engineering: A Resource Guidebook, William Oakes Jan 2004

Service-Learning In Engineering: A Resource Guidebook, William Oakes

Higher Education

Several issues have motivated reform in engineering education over the past decade. Industry’s call for more well-rounded graduates who are better equipped for today’s fast-moving, global economy has motivated the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) to redefine its accreditation criteria in a way that places professional skills such as teamwork, communication, and awareness of social issues into core engineering curricula. The continued underrepresentation of women and minorities in engineering has fueled innovative curricular models that integrate active learning with relevant engineering applications. At the same time, the overall decline in interest in engineering among high school students has …

Homeless Persons' Residential Preferences And Needs: A Pilot Survey, Russell K. Schutt Jan 2004

Homeless Persons' Residential Preferences And Needs: A Pilot Survey, Russell K. Schutt

Sociology Faculty Publication Series

The 2003 Pilot Survey of Residential Preferences and Needs sampled individuals with psychiatric difficulties at three large generic shelters for adult individuals in Boston and one of four transitional shelters funded by the Metro Boston Region of the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health.

 The survey measured: homeless persons’ residential preferences; the residential recommendations of shelter-based clinicians for these homeless persons; clinicians’ assessments of these persons’ living skills and safety.

 Respondents at the DMH shelter were somewhat more satisfied with their shelter and with the people who stayed there than were those at the generic shelters. The DMH shelter …
