From Colorblindness To Intercultural Sensitivity: Infusing Diversity Training In Pete Programs, Joe W. Burden Jr., Samuel R. Hodge, Camille P. O'Bryant, Louis Harrison Jr.

Kinesiology and Public Health

In this paper, we advocate infusing diversity training across physical education teacher education (PETE) programs and curricula (DeSensi, 1995). Specifically, we call for PETE programs to provide curriculum content and professional socialization experiences that enhance intercultural sensitivity to better prepare novice teachers for working effectively with students of various cultures and ethnicities (DeSensi, 1995; Hodge, 2003). We discuss (a) changing demographics in society and schools with implications for preparing teachers, (b) moving from ethnocentricism to ethnorelativism of intercultural sensitivity, (c) implementing NCATE diversity initiatives, (d) infusing diversity training in PETE programs, and (e) understanding physical activity and sport participation patterns …

A Generalized Quasi-Likelihood Model Application To Modeling Poverty Of Asian American Women, Jeffrey R. Wilson

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A generalized quasi-likelihood function that does not require the assumption of an underlying distribution when modeling jointly the mean and the variance, is introduced to examine poverty of Asian American women living in the West coast of the United States, using data from U.S. Census Bureau.

Estimation Of Multiple Linear Functional Relationships, Amjad D. Al-Nasser May 2004

Estimation Of Multiple Linear Functional Relationships, Amjad D. Al-Nasser

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

This article deals with multiple linear functional relationships models. Two robust estimations procedure are proposed to estimate the model, based on Generalized Maximum Entropy and Partial Least Square. They are distribution free and do not rely (so much) on classical assumptions. The experiments showed that the GME approach outperforms the PLS in terms of mean squares of errors (MSE). Empirical examples are studied.

An Empirical Investigation Of Decision-Making Satisfaction In Web-Based Decision Support Systems, Pratyush Bharati, Abhijit Chaudhury May 2004

An Empirical Investigation Of Decision-Making Satisfaction In Web-Based Decision Support Systems, Pratyush Bharati, Abhijit Chaudhury

Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series

Web-based information systems are increasingly being used for decision support applications. However few empirical studies have been conducted on web-based decision support systems (DSS). This experimental research endeavors to understand factors that impact decision-making satisfaction in web based decision support systems. Using structural equation modeling approach, the analysis reveals that information quality and system quality influence decision-making satisfaction, while information presentation does not have an effect on decision-making satisfaction.

Chocolate Plantation: A Geophysical And Archaeological Examination Of A Sea Island Cotton Plantation On Sapelo Island, Georgia, Christopher William Simmons May 2004

Chocolate Plantation: A Geophysical And Archaeological Examination Of A Sea Island Cotton Plantation On Sapelo Island, Georgia, Christopher William Simmons

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chocolate Field, the area containing the ruins of Chocolate Plantation, was occupied from the Late Archaic through the antebellum period into the 20th century. A complex overlay of architectural remains generated during the operation of the plantation by everyone from French nobles to 20th century millionaires is buried at the site. A four- instrument geophysical survey in conjunction with test excavations provides data which make it possible to delineate the extent of the site, determine structure function, and separate the plantation into occupational phases. These results will ultimately serve to help link the Geechee/Gullah community presently living on Sapelo …

Dysacademia In The Ivory Towers: Performativity, Discipline, Control & Chaotically Moving Towards The Shadows Of The 3rd Educational Spaces, Paul René Geisler May 2004

Dysacademia In The Ivory Towers: Performativity, Discipline, Control & Chaotically Moving Towards The Shadows Of The 3rd Educational Spaces, Paul René Geisler

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This theoretical inquiry is based upon an archaeological and genealogical deconstruction of the character, utility and state of being of the modern university in the United States. In introducing Dysacademia as an apt metaphor for today's dysfunctional academy, the current discursive analysis describes the various affects and effects that neoliberalism, performativity, discipline, and control have had upon the inorganic institutions of higher learning, and upon its primary subject concerns, the organic constituents known as the professoriate and the student body. As a follow up to this Ivory Tower deconstruction, a reconstructive enunciation is shaped using a conglomeration of postmodern, open …

The Perils Of Risk Assessment, James J. Chriss May 2004

The Perils Of Risk Assessment, James J. Chriss

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

The article considers how social solidarity has changed over the long march of human history. The distinction that the author Emile Durkheim makes between mechanical and organic solidarity is summarized. In his book "Suicide," Durkheim's pessimism about modern society was fueled by data which indicated that social pathologies were occurring at higher rates in metropolitan communities. The application of postmodern interpretations to the criminal justice arena, especially in terms of the practice of reducing risk via the development of risk assessment tools is illustrated.

The Descent Of Darwin—A Theological Understanding Of Charles Darwin, David Kummer May 2004

The Descent Of Darwin—A Theological Understanding Of Charles Darwin, David Kummer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In the process of seeking to understand Charles Darwin and his ideas that have come to dominate much of the modern/postmodern, western worldview, it is essential to elucidate the historical context in which both are developed is essential to elucidate. This approach asserts a reciprocity between Darwin the man (son, explorer, naturalist, husband, father, controversialist)and his ideas that not only derive from his life experiences but also contribute to them. An obvious place to start in this regard is the relationship he has with his mother. Although seemingly Freudian in tone, the purpose for this analysis does not include a …

An Analysis Of Crisis Strategies Used By Schools In Response To Violence And Terrorism, Linda Lewis Gellert May 2004

An Analysis Of Crisis Strategies Used By Schools In Response To Violence And Terrorism, Linda Lewis Gellert

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recurring incidents of school violence indicate the need for effective school crisis plans with unique strategies. Acts of international terrorism combined with highly sensationalized school shootings, although rare but significant, generate demands for additional measures of school safety. This study was designed to investigate the status of crisis preparedness in Indiana schools. The study attempted to determine the adequacy of school crisis plans based on state and federal recommendations for school safety. School crisis strategies and practices were assessed to determine which policies and procedures were in place. Principal experiences were explored to determine the degree of incidence for the …

Contemporary Visions Of Progress In Ecology And Thoughts For The Future, Brian M. Starzomski, Bradley J. Cardinale, Jennifer A. Dunne, Melinda J. Hillery, Carrie A. Holt, Meg A. Krawchuk, Melissa Lage, Sean Mcmahon, Michael C. Melnychuk

Research outputs pre 2011

Although ecological research is progressing rapidly, the answers to certain key questions continue to elude us. This paper considers several of the contemporary challenges facing ecology. (1) Terminology is voluminous and often poorly defined, resulting in inefficient communication. (2) The concept of scale affects our inferences about system structure and function, requiring us to continue an almost heuristic investigation of breaks, domains, and integration. New tools that more explicitly incorporate scalar issues will need to be developed for progress to take place in the field of ecology. (3) Increasingly, it is expected that applied questions will be solved in less …

Straight Away: The Meaning And Literary Function Of Εὐθὐς/Εὐθἐως In The Gospel Of Mark, Daniel Paavola May 2004

Straight Away: The Meaning And Literary Function Of Εὐθὐς/Εὐθἐως In The Gospel Of Mark, Daniel Paavola

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Mark is the Gospel of breathless excitement. The narrative is noted for its rapid movement between scenes and for an urgent tone through the miracles and journeys of Jesus. With its focus upon the actions of key characters, the Gospel leads the reader quickly through the ministry of Jesus as he approaches his passion. From its opening in1:2-3 which promises a straight path ahead, the narrative moves forward to the culmination of that road at the cross.

A key in furthering this journey is the use of εὐθὐς. Used at least forty-two times in the Gospel, εὐθὐς serves as an …

The Corporate Culture Of Nevada Hospitals, Sherese Marie Warren May 2004

The Corporate Culture Of Nevada Hospitals, Sherese Marie Warren

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The initial focus of this study is to identify the dominant culture of Nevada hospitals and to determine whether hospital organizations in Nevada share similar corporate values and beliefs. If differences exist, what are the distinctions in those organizations that make them different? The competing values framework was used to diagnose four corporate culture types of each hospital. The clan culture possesses high affiliation and concern with teamwork and participation. The developmental culture is based on risk taking, innovation, and change. The hierarchical culture reflects values and norms associated with bureaucracy. The rational culture emphasizes efficiency and achievement (Quinn & …

Free At Last?, Adekunle Solaru May 2004

Free At Last?, Adekunle Solaru

Student Scholarship

Academic literature on work entry and professional growth in the United States lacks studies of individuals from cultures other than the dominant culture. Given the prime importance of academic research in the development of public goods, this lacuna contributes to the sub-optimal achievements of efforts to improve employment outcomes for some of America's unemployed and under-employed population. For individuals who have historically deep roots in the United States, such as some African-Americans, psychological adaptation to the American workplace is a key obstacle to the freedom of full participation in the culture of the United States. For individuals who move to …
