Ultra-Thin Silicon Chips For Submillimeter-Wave Applications, Robert B. Bass, J. C. Schultz, Arthur W. Lichtenberger, R. M. Weiklel, S K. Pan, E. Bryerton, C. K. Walker, Jacob Kooi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present a process for fabricating ultra-thin silicon chips for submillimeter-wave mixing applications using SOI (Silicon On Insulator) wafers. Such chips allow the profile of the mixer substrate to be minimized within the microstrip channel, thereby simplifying RF design considerations and minimizing machining constraints. The chips feature gold beam leads, RF filter structures, and hot-electron bolometers as the non-linear element. We designed a prototype receiver to demonstrate the feasibility of the ultra-thin silicon chip technology. The receiver has a center frequency of 585GHz and accommodates both diffusion-cooled and phonon-cooled hotelectron bolometer mixers fabricated atop an ultra-thin silicon chip. The chip …

The Catalyst To Harm Standard: Punishing Speech That Facilitates Harm, J. Colin Trisler Jan 2004

The Catalyst To Harm Standard: Punishing Speech That Facilitates Harm, J. Colin Trisler

LSU Master's Theses

The Catalyst to Harm Standard is a specific standard that sets forth step-by-step criteria for the courts to follow so that they can factually determine if the speech in question falls into the category of protected or unprotected speech. This Standard labels certain speech as “bad” not because of its ideological or social content, but because it is speech that is linked to a definitive social harm that the legislature has the constitutional authority to prevent or punish. This Standard uses three criteria to determine the liability of speech that has allegedly caused harm. In order to meet these requirements, …

Models Of Statistical Self-Similarity For Signal And Image Synthesis, Seungsin Lee Jan 2004

Models Of Statistical Self-Similarity For Signal And Image Synthesis, Seungsin Lee

Theses

Statistical self-similarity of random processes in continuous-domains is defined through invariance of their statistics to time or spatial scaling. In discrete-time, scaling by an arbitrary factor of signals can be accomplished through frequency warping, and statistical self-similarity is defined by the discrete-time continuous-dilation scaling operation. Unlike other self-similarity models mostly relying on characteristics of continuous self-similarity other than scaling, this model provides a way to express discrete-time statistical self-similarity using scaling of discrete-time signals. This dissertation studies the discrete-time self-similarity model based on the new scaling operation, and develops its properties, which reveals relations with other models. Furthermore, it also …

Improving Existing Wayfinding Theory For Hospital Environments, Youngjoo Park Jan 2004

Improving Existing Wayfinding Theory For Hospital Environments, Youngjoo Park

Theses

A hospital is an institution that provides medical, surgical or psychiatric care and treatment of the sick or the injured. With those specialized purposes, a hospital has a unique environment and hospital users have special needs and a wide range of personal characteristics. People visiting or admitted to a hospital are often anxious. Losing their way or becoming disoriented in a complex hospital facility increases anxiety and stress. Stress levels can adversely affect the results of medical treatment. Poor wayfinding design can elevate stress levels, which can adversely affect medical treatment, and decrease patients' satisfaction with the quality of medical …

Emotional Recogition Ability Among Incarcerated Youth, Aubrey S. Elmore Jan 2004

Emotional Recogition Ability Among Incarcerated Youth, Aubrey S. Elmore

Theses

The purpose of this study was to consider emotional recognition ability among incarcerated youth. Specifically, thirty-eight inmates who were eligible for a Free and Appropriate Education (FAPE) under New York State law participated in the study. Participants were administered Ekman's facial discrimination task (1976), the Sociomoral Reflection Measure-Short Form (SRM-SF; Gibbs, Basinger, &Fuller, 1992), and an Emotional Intelligence Survey (Schutte et al., 1998). Results showed the incarcerated youth were less accurate in identifying emotions from facial expressions than were non-incarcerated young adults. Further, incarcerated youth with identified learning disabilities were even less accurate in their ability to recognize emotions than …

The Persuasive Image, George D. Grove Jan 2004

The Persuasive Image, George D. Grove

Theses

The unfortunate suburban migration continues. These newly arrived suburbanites exchange their multidimensional urban city views for those of a carefully constructed and intensely controlled pastoral view. This view from their windows is one that symbolizes their ownership of the land and their freedom from dense urban living conditions. The open space and grass function as powerful reminders of why they live in suburbia. But what would occur if the suburbanites were to exchange their view of plastic Eden with images from the city? What if the view of their altered yards and obsessively manicured gardens were intentionally replaced with views …

Vibration Of Hollow Cylindrical Shells With Partial Constrained Layer Damping, Nathan E. Smith Jan 2004

Vibration Of Hollow Cylindrical Shells With Partial Constrained Layer Damping, Nathan E. Smith

Theses

A theoretical analysis is presented for determining the natural frequencies and damping factors for isotropic circular cylindrical shell type structures. Equations of motion for a cylindrical shell and a three-layer cylindrical shell fully and partially treated, with a viscoelastic core, are derived from equilibrium. The assumed mode method or Galerkin method are used to find the equivalent mass and stiffness matrices from which the natural frequencies can then be obtained. The effects on the natural frequency and damping factor due to various viscoelastic core thicknesses, viscoelastic shear moduli, constraining layer thickness, constraining layer Young's moduli, and viscoelastic coverage length are …

Intrinsic Motivation In The Classroom: Increasing Learning And Retention, Emily K. Hesek

Theses

A growing body of research suggests that intrinsic motivation and self-determination are key factors in academic achievement and success. The present study investigated whether children learned and retained information better when taught a social skills lesson using a self-determining approach, rather than a traditional directive lesson plan. In particular, this study examined whether lesson plans that included choice and autonomy support would affect students' intrinsic motivation for the task, and improve their learning and retention over time. Fifty-six fourth grade students from a large suburban school district in upstate New York participated. Significant group differences were found on a pre-test …

Use Of System Dynamics And Easel For Simulation Of The Software Development Process, Alicia Strupp Jan 2004

Use Of System Dynamics And Easel For Simulation Of The Software Development Process, Alicia Strupp

Theses

Team software development is a complex and mostly unpredictable process and is characterized by inefficient use of staff and calendar resources. Given the magnitude of software development costs, a deeper understanding of the process may suggest ways to improve resource utilization. Simulation modeling is a useful approach to study the dynamics of complex systems. System dynamics characterizes systems as collections of interacting, non-linear feedback loops. The foundations of system dynamics were developed at MIT in the early 1950s. Since that time, system dynamics has been applied to a large number of complex system domains. In the early 1980s, the system …

The Effect Of Observational Method And Task Complexity On Neuropsychological Test Performance, Linda S. Lindman Jan 2004

The Effect Of Observational Method And Task Complexity On Neuropsychological Test Performance, Linda S. Lindman

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Neuropsychologists are often called upon to conduct psychological examination in the presence of an observer in litigation cases despite research clearly demonstrating altered performance on neuropsychological tests under such conditions. Past research into the social facilitation effect suggests attentional conflict (Baron, 1986; Manstead & Semin, 1980) and increased anxiety (Guerin & Innes, 1982; Guerin, 1983) when observers are present and cannot be monitored. However, this research has found conflicting results depending upon the complexity of tasks and differences in observation condition. Meta analyses point to task complexity (Bond & Titus, 1983) and evaluation apprehension (Guerin, 1986) as important moderators of …

The Chick Embryo Amnion As An In Vitro Culture System For Ivf And Nt Embryos, Tonya Renea Davidson Jan 2004

The Chick Embryo Amnion As An In Vitro Culture System For Ivf And Nt Embryos, Tonya Renea Davidson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Calving rates are significantly reduced following in vitro production of embryos. Thus, if a technique could be developed that would increase calving rates by as little as one viable offspring, significant research advances could be made. Therefore, in a series of experiments, the efficiency and quality of culturing IVP bovine embryos in the amnion of a domestic chicken egg was tested. In Experiment I, by culturing IVP bovine embryos in the chick amnion (day 4 to 7 of incubation) it was discovered that there was no significant difference in blastocyst rates compared with controls. In Experiment II, it was shown …

Examining The Relationships Between Ability Conceptions, Intrinsic Motivation, Presistence And Performance, Weidong Li Jan 2004

Examining The Relationships Between Ability Conceptions, Intrinsic Motivation, Presistence And Performance, Weidong Li

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between ability conceptions, intrinsic motivation, persistence, and performance using an interaction approach. The phase-one study revealed that participants who were more oriented toward incremental ability beliefs were likely to be more intrinsically motivated. For those who were more intrinsically motivated, they displayed more persistence and obtained better performance scores. Participants who were highly intrinsically motivated had lower performance scores as they were more oriented toward incremental ability beliefs. The phase-two study showed that participants who were more oriented toward incremental views were more intrinsically motivated, which provided evidence supporting the …

Lattice Boltzmann Simulation Of Flow Around Bluff-Bodies, Kevin Tubbs Jan 2004

Lattice Boltzmann Simulation Of Flow Around Bluff-Bodies, Kevin Tubbs

LSU Master's Theses

In this work, results from a 2-D Lattice Boltzmann (LB) solver are presented simulating flow past rectangular square cylinders at low Reynolds numbers (< 250). The LBGK equation is a hyperbolic equation that approximates the Navier Stokes equations in the nearly incompressible limit. It is a system of 9 one dimensional partial differential Hamiltonian-Jacobian equations, consisting of an advection and diffusive portion. The LB method is an alternative computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method used to numerically predict incompressible viscous flow. The current LB method uses a statistical mechanics formulation to solve the Boltzmann equation. The LB model captures the nonlinear Navier Stokes advection terms using linear streaming operators. In this thesis, the LB model is classified as an explicit, Lagrangian, finite-hyperbolicity and weakly compressible approximation of the Navier Stokes equations. The momentum flux tensor is captured locally as opposed to a pressure field eliminating the need to solve the Poisson equation. This allows the fluid structure interactions (FSI) behavior to be calculated elegantly at the interface through the mesoscopic momentum transfer between the fluid and structure. At this level, the forces are simultaneously calculated. The LB equations are discretized both in time and phase space using a standard D2Q9 lattice model. Validation tests for flow around single square cylinders at different aspect ratio at low Reynolds numbers are presented. Good agreement with other investigators is achieved. Flow past multiple bluff bodies (representing building in a city) is also presented. The vortex shedding simulations presented provide preliminary indications in terms of St that the LB method can be used to simulate high Re flow.
