Content Analysis Of The Leading General Academic Databases, Kelly D. Blessinger, Maureen Olle-Lajoie

Faculty Publications

Title lists from the three leading general academic databases were compared to evaluate journal content. Some of the elements that were analyzed include subject coverage, the quality of titles provided, accessibility issues, and trends over time for these databases. While database title lists are now readily available on the Internet for comparison, as our article illustrates, these lists need further evaluation for proper assessment.

Controversies In Emotional Intelligence, John D. Mayer

UNH Personality Lab

The original UNH webpage about emotional intelligence was among the first online and publicly available sources of responsible information about emotional intelligence. Here, in revised form, are edited e-mail exchanges and posts about controversies concerning emotional intelligence. Although the exchanges took place in 2004, many of the controversies are still relevant to the field of EI today.

The following document represents a reconstruction and update of the earlier UNH Emotional Intelligence site and information that was available on it. The reconstruction includes all the major essays and e-mail exchanges with colleagues about the theory that were relevant to emotional intelligence. …

Do Church Planting Systems Help Church Planters? A Summary And Study Of The System That Southern Baptists Use To Support Their Church Planters, Ed Stetzer Jan 2004

Do Church Planting Systems Help Church Planters? A Summary And Study Of The System That Southern Baptists Use To Support Their Church Planters, Ed Stetzer

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

Does the presence of a church planting system assist in the growth of new churches? Anecdotal information has existed for years. It seemed to many that church planters did better when they were screened, had mentors, met with other planters, etc. However, there has been no large-scale study on the subject until now. This paper presents the results of a three-year of study of the Church Planting Process (CPP) used by the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Suicide Assessment By Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses: A Phenomenographic Study, John M. Aflague Jan 2004

Suicide Assessment By Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses: A Phenomenographic Study, John M. Aflague

Open Access Dissertations

Suicide is the eleventh leading cause of mortality in the United States. This study explored suicide assessment by psychiatric nurses. The primary aims of this study were to gain an understanding of nurses' conceptions regarding suicide and suicide assessment, describe the strategies of suicide assessment adopted by psychiatric nurses, and contrast these to contemporary standards and practice guidelines of suicide assessment.

The research design was an inductive descriptive phenomenographic study. The nurse participants consisted of a snowball sample of six psychiatric nurses practicing in two psychiatric settings. The data were collected through participant observations of nurses' assessing patients and semi-structured …

Survivorship Of A Low-Grade Glioma Brain Tumor, Cynthia A. Bautista Jan 2004

Survivorship Of A Low-Grade Glioma Brain Tumor, Cynthia A. Bautista

Open Access Dissertations

Due to dramatic improvements in diagnosis, treatment options, and improved survival rates, the experience of cancer is changing. Little is known, however, about which factors facilitate positive adaptation for individuals who survive cancer. Research in the area of brain tumor survivorship is limited and provides minimal understanding of the survivor's experience. The purpose of this study was to describe the survivorship experience of adults who were one to four years posttreatment for a low-grade glioma brain tumor and to explore how family, friends, employers, and health care providers had been helpful in the transition back to life after treatment. Eight …

The Experience Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury For Selected Cases, Joanne Baggerly Jan 2004

The Experience Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury For Selected Cases, Joanne Baggerly

Open Access Dissertations

There are hints in the literature that recovery from mild traumatic brain injury may be problematic for older persons, yet there is a paucity of information on the experience. The purpose of this study was to develop a descriptive base and highlight the perspective of the client. This is important to nurses in that appropriate intervention must be grounded in an understanding of the problem as perceived and acted upon by the client. This study describes the experience of three women over 50 years of age who had a mild traumatic brain injury. The analytical process followed the case study …

From Discourse To Activism: Trajectories Of Percy Bysshe Shelley's Nonviolence Philosophy In Literatures Of Resistance, Susan Joan Peterson Jan 2004

From Discourse To Activism: Trajectories Of Percy Bysshe Shelley's Nonviolence Philosophy In Literatures Of Resistance, Susan Joan Peterson

Open Access Dissertations

My dissertation traces the emergence of a new discourse on nonviolence conflict reconciliation during the age of the English Romantic poets. Specifically, this project examines Percy Bysshe Shelley's prose works such as An Address to the Irish People, Proposals for an Association of Philanthropists , and the Notes to Queen Mab. Within these texts Shelley articulates both the philosophy and methodology of nonviolent conflict reconciliation. His theory significantly impacted the formation of the philosophies and the campaigns of the later nonviolence author/activists Henry David Thoreau, Mohandas Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mairead Maguire. Rather than viewing their momentous …

Freedom's Children: Fifth Graders' Perceptions Of The Effects Of Peace Education In The Form Of Kingian Nonviolence, Sylvia Carolle Spears

Open Access Dissertations

This ethnographic study examines students' perceptions of the effects of peace education in the form of Kingian Nonviolence. Nine fifth grade students and seven parents were interviewed using life-story methods to elicit participants' perceptions regarding how the students' study of nonviolence affected their beliefs and behaviors. Data were coded and then analyzed utilizing constant comparison methods. Analysis of interview transcripts resulted in two categories of data--the fifth grade experience and social and personal change. Analysis of interview transcripts revealed that the fifth grade experience had three distinct phases--a phase of initial anxiety and concern, a middle phase during which the …

Nursing Practice In A Magnet Hospital: A Descriptive Study, Kathleen M. Stolzenberger Jan 2004

Nursing Practice In A Magnet Hospital: A Descriptive Study, Kathleen M. Stolzenberger

Open Access Dissertations

The organizational context of hospital nursing practice has gained international attention as a growing body of research demonstrates its significance as a factor affecting the supply and performance of registered nurses and the quality of patient care. Studies of organizations designated by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as magnet hospitals demonstrate significant and positive relationships among organizational, nurse, and patient variables. However, knowledge about the nursing work environment as an influence on practice is limited by the absence of studies exploring the actual practice of staff nurses and the nursing unit as the more immediate context in which it …

The Implementation Of Fda Determinations In Litigation - Why Do We Defer To The Pto But Not To The Fda?, William G. Childs

This Article examines the possible inequity of the treatment of licensees' rights in tort litigation in comparison to patent rights in patent litigation. In particular, this Article presents the presumptions afforded from issued patents as a valid model for the proper treatment of FDA approval in litigation. Presently, most academic discussion proposes either preclusion of tort claims or leaving the system more or less as it stands. This Article, on the other hand, proposes a middle ground.

This Article begins by examining the differences between the USPTO and the FDA. In particular, the quantity and quality of the review provided …

Stranded In The Wastelands Of Unregulated Roadway Police Powers: Can Reasonable Officers Ever Rescue Us., Keith S. Hampton Jan 2004

Stranded In The Wastelands Of Unregulated Roadway Police Powers: Can Reasonable Officers Ever Rescue Us., Keith S. Hampton

St. Mary's Law Journal

This Article describes the present state of roadway police power and explores the vulnerability of drivers and occupants to police abuse, specifically using pretextual stops. Today, state and federal courts have made many police power accommodations to the constitutional reasonableness requirement. Current Fourth Amendment jurisprudence justifies almost all conceivable police seizures of people in vehicles. If the police officer can point out any traffic law violation, he can arrest. And if he can arrest under those circumstances, then the already blurred line between detentions and arrest becomes inconsequential, constitutionally speaking. This Article proposes that the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals …
