Normative Evaluation Of A Letter Cancellation Instrument For The Assessment Of Sustained Attention: A Construct Validation Study, Ashley N. Kalina, Suzie A. Walgrave Jan 2004

Normative Evaluation Of A Letter Cancellation Instrument For The Assessment Of Sustained Attention: A Construct Validation Study, Ashley N. Kalina, Suzie A. Walgrave

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

Cancellation tests are simple instruments that have traditionally been used to study sustained attention. Common formats follow a test pattern in which rows of letters symbols or numbers are randomly interspersed with designated targets. Test participants are generally asked to identify targets while ignoring similar non-target distracter items. In the current study we present normative data on a new cancellation instrument developed at SDSU. We present guidelines for administration, as well as normative data on omission errors, commission errors, mean target hit rates, processing speed performance, and test-retest reliability for 102 undergraduate participants in the 18-25 year old age range. …

Can Implementing 5 Organizational Strategies Affect Student's Motivation To Complete Homework?, Shannan L. Sicienski Jan 2004

Can Implementing 5 Organizational Strategies Affect Student's Motivation To Complete Homework?, Shannan L. Sicienski

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

Throughout my years teaching at the middle school level I have found for many students, getting them to complete homework is a difficult task. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has st:L up goals that students should meet in each grade level. One area that middle school students should be able to attain is to communicate mathematically. According to NCTM Standards students need the ability to read, write, listen, think creatively and communicate about problems they encounter in our society (NCTM, 1998). To do this students must be able to communicate mathematically by discussing mathematical ideas and make …

Cerebral Activation During Thermal Stimulation Of Burning Mouth Disorder Patients: An Fmri Study, Romulo J.C. Albuquerque Jan 2004

Cerebral Activation During Thermal Stimulation Of Burning Mouth Disorder Patients: An Fmri Study, Romulo J.C. Albuquerque

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been widely used to study cortical and subcortical mechanisms related to pain. The pathophysiology of burning mouth disorder (BMD) is not clearly understood. Central neuropathic mechanisms are thought to be main players in BMD. This study aimed to compare the location and extension of brain activation following thermal stimulation of the trigeminal nerve with fMRI blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) signal. This study included 8 female patients with BMD and 8 matched pain-free volunteers. Qualitative and quantitative differences in brain activation patterns between the two study groups were demonstrated. There were differences in the …

Life Care Plans : A Resource For Caregivers, Carolyn E. Rutherford Jan 2004

Life Care Plans : A Resource For Caregivers, Carolyn E. Rutherford

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Life Care Plans have been used since the early 70s, primarily to assist in litigation involving catastrophic illness or injury. In the last decade Life Care Plans have become an important component in the field of litigation and rehabilitation. However, to date no studies have explored the impact having a Life Care Plan may have for the family Caregiver. Literature supports the need Caregivers have for detailed and concise information about their loved one's condition, plan of care and future needs. This study investigated the perceived helpfulness of the Life Care Plan to Caregivers. Using a 5-point Likert Scale, Caregivers …

Woman Centered: A Feminist Ethic Of Responsibility, Rebecca Whisnant Jan 2004

Woman Centered: A Feminist Ethic Of Responsibility, Rebecca Whisnant

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Feminists have been especially concerned, of course, with the particular personal and moral perils that may be associated with the sociopolitical situation( s) of women. In particular, as many have observed, the cultural assignment of women to various forms of "caring labor" can be harmful to women, both individually and collectively, by rendering them dangerously vulnerable to exploitation. Women who fail to rein in their "caring" for others may maintain relationships at all costs (including to themselves), avoid legitimate self-assertion in order to keep the peace, devote their energies to others at the expense of seIf-development, and protect even those …

Moral Psychology: Feminist Ethics And Social Theory, Peggy Desautels, Margaret Urban Walker Jan 2004

Moral Psychology: Feminist Ethics And Social Theory, Peggy Desautels, Margaret Urban Walker

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Book abstract: Moral psychology studies the features of cognition, judgement, perception, and emotion that make human beings capable of moral action. Perspectives from feminist and race theory immensely enrich moral psychology. Writers who take these perspectives ask questions about mind, feeling, and action in contexts of social difference and unequal power and opportunity. These essays by a distinguished international cast of philosophers explore moral psychology as it connects to social life, scientific studies, and literature.

Chapter abstract: Most of us view ourselves as having moral commitments and expect that when given the opportunity, we will follow through on these commitments. …

Kant And The Logic Of Aristotle, Kurt Mosser Jan 2004

Kant And The Logic Of Aristotle, Kurt Mosser

Philosophy Faculty Publications

In the Preface to the second edition of the Critique of Pure Reason, Kant offers his best-known—indeed, notorious—remark about Aristotle's logic:

  • Since Aristotle . . . logic has not been able to advance a single step, and is thus to all appearance a closed and completed doctrine (Bviii).1

I wish to explore here the following question: is Kant in fact saying that since Aristotle, there need be no more concern about logic as a discipline or a field of study, that Aristotle (with some minor embellishments, in terms of presentation) is the last word in logic? Certainly that is how …

Affordances In The Design Of Virtual Environments, David Charles Gross Jan 2004

Affordances In The Design Of Virtual Environments, David Charles Gross

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Human-computer interaction design principles largely focus on static representations and have yet to fully incorporate theories of perception appropriate for the dynamic multimodal interactions inherent to virtual environment (VE) interaction. Theories of direct perception, in particular affordance theory, may prove particularly relevant to enhancing VE interaction design. The present research constructs a conceptual model of how affordances are realized in the natural world and how lack of sensory stimuli may lead to realization failures in virtual environments. Implications of the model were empirically investigated by examining three affordances: passability, catchability, and flyability. The experimental design involved four factors for each …

Performance Of Intellectually Gifted Children On Three Measures Of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Kent S. Rosengren Jan 2004

Performance Of Intellectually Gifted Children On Three Measures Of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Kent S. Rosengren

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

While there is a growing awareness of the co-occurrence of giftedness and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), little is known about the clinical presentation of ADHD in intellectually gifted children. Current diagnostic decisions with this subpopulation are made employing procedures and norms developed using a nonexceptional population. However, it is unknown whether this common practice is appropriate. This study explored how intellectually gifted children perform on three commonly used measures of ADHD, specifically: (a) the Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA); (b) the Conners' Teacher Rating Scale, Revised - Long Form (CTS); and (c) the Conners' Parent Rating Scale, Revised …

Function And Body Image Levels In Individuals With Transfemoral Amputations Using The C-Leg®, Erica L. Swanson

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Purpose: It was purposed that individuals using the Otto Bock C-Leg®, a microprocessor controlled prosthetic knee joint, may experience an enhanced level of functional independence. Secondly, it was hypothesized that with increased functional abilities and independence from using the C-Leg® comes a positive body image.

Methods: Following IRB approval, a purposive sampling method was used to recruit 8 adult volunteers from a regional rehabilitation hospital. Inclusion criteria for participants in this study included individuals who had a transfemoral amputation, were currently using the C-Leg®, were over the age of 18 years, and without cognitive limitations. Subjects were asked to complete …

Le Pronostic Occupationnel Des Travailleurs Aux Prises Avec Des Affections Vertébrales, Clermont Dionne, Renée Bourbonnais, Pierre Frémont, Michel Rossignol, Susan Stock
