Development Of A New Measure Of Men's Objectification Of Women: Factor Structure Test Retest Validity, Paul Curran '04 Jan 2004

Development Of A New Measure Of Men's Objectification Of Women: Factor Structure Test Retest Validity, Paul Curran '04

Honors Projects

Objectification involves treating individuals on the basis of their external rather than internal features. This study focused on the continued construction and development of an individual difference measure of men's objectification of women. Our measure was meant to quantify and define the idea of objectification. The first part of this study (Zolot, 2003), completed last year, created the initial item pool of 66 items and a four-factor structure for our measure. In this study we refined our measure based on previous factor analysis and added new items in order to extend and clarify these factors and test ideas about sexual …

Redefining Participation: Towards The Creation And Understanding Of An Inclusive Definition, Amy K. Atwood '04 Jan 2004

Redefining Participation: Towards The Creation And Understanding Of An Inclusive Definition, Amy K. Atwood '04

Honors Projects

Although a great deal of research has been conducted regarding class participation, researchers have systematically disregarded those students who participate best through means other than vocal contribution to class discussion. This exploratory study examined definitions of participation, as well as participation behaviors and beliefs, in the hope of gaining a better understanding of the culture of participation. Participants included 17 professors and 101 students. Cluster analysis was conducted and showed the existence of at least three distinct groups of participators. Independent samples t-tests showed only one significant difference between student and professor beliefs of how likely students would be to …

Factors Affecting Environmental Concern In Bloomington-Normal Residents, Divya Soni '04, Katie Wehr '04 Jan 2004

Factors Affecting Environmental Concern In Bloomington-Normal Residents, Divya Soni '04, Katie Wehr '04

The Park Place Economist

This study focuses on what actions residents of Bloomington and Normal Illinois are taking to lessen their impact on the environment. These actions demonstrate their concern for the environment. Finding out what influences environmentally friendly actions is a difficult process because of the complexity and the number of factors that contribute to these decisions. Not only are the factors numerous, but they also vary in intensity. This study uncovers a few of the contributing factors to environmental concern of Bloomington-Normal residents.

Animal Ethics And The Scientific Study Of Animals: Bridging The “Is” And The “Ought”, David Fraser, Rod Preece Jan 2004

Animal Ethics And The Scientific Study Of Animals: Bridging The “Is” And The “Ought”, David Fraser, Rod Preece

General - Ethics

From ancient Greece to the present, philosophers have variously emphasized either the similarities or the differences between humans and nonhuman animals as a basis for ethical conclusions. Thus animal ethics has traditionally involved both factual claims, usually about animals’ mental states and capacities, and ethical claims about their moral standing. However, even in modern animal ethics the factual claims are often scientifically uninformed, involve broad generalizations about diverse taxonomic groups, and show little agreement about how to resolve the contradictions. Research in cognitive ethology and animal welfare science provides empirical material and a set of emerging methods for testing the …

Intellectual Humility And The Art Of Disagreement At The Christian College, James S. Spiegel Jan 2004

Intellectual Humility And The Art Of Disagreement At The Christian College, James S. Spiegel

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Education at a Christian college properly features both honest inquiry and unwavering allegiance to core theological standards, such as those embodied in the classical creeds. This combination of commitments can create tension for the Christian educator, as insistence upon doctrinal allegiance can inadvertently reinforce dogmatic attitudes so common among late adolescents. In this paper I discuss the virtue of intellectual humility and its importance for combating student dogmatism in an atmosphere of steadfast Christian commitment. After distinguishing between theological essentials and disputable matters, I discuss philosophical and theological grounds for being intellectually humble. And I illustrate ways in which faculty …

A Quantitative Methodology For Determining The Need For Exposure-Prompted Medical Monitoring, Christopher P. Guzelian, Bruce E. Hillner, Philip S. Guzelian Jan 2004

A Quantitative Methodology For Determining The Need For Exposure-Prompted Medical Monitoring, Christopher P. Guzelian, Bruce E. Hillner, Philip S. Guzelian

Indiana Law Journal

Some toxic exposures to drugs or other environmental chemicals may create an increased risk of future disease for which periodic preventive medical screening might be desirable. However, many of these risks, even if unacceptable as a matter of public health policy, might still not be significant enough for medical monitoring (periodic diagnostic screening for latent illnesses or medical conditions) to be an appropriate medical intervention. This somewhat unintuitive, but statistically certain, conclusion can be demonstrated in relatively simple mathematical terms. Accordingly, we introduce Bayes's Rule and decision analysis, a quantitative methodology commonly employed by medical practitioners. A review of current …

Health Educators In Florida’S County Public Health Departments: Frequency Of And Perceived Confidence In Performing Entry-Level Competencies, Gwendolyn Matthews, Michele Johnson Moore, Chudley Werch

Public Health Faculty Research and Scholarship

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the activities of health educators in Florida’s county health departments concur with the responsibilities and competencies for health educators that have been established by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC, 2003). Fifty-three (68.8%) county public health department health educators completed a modified version of the Self-Assessment for the Health Education Specialist instrument (National Task Force, 1987) to determine the frequency and perceived confidence in performing entry-level health educator responsibilities. The data indicated that the entry-level responsibilities reflect the current health education practice in this group of health educators. The …
