Sm 701 Supervised Ministries Internship, Asbury Theological Seminary

Syllabi

You have elected to fulfill one of your Supervised Ministry requirements in a full-time internship off-campus. This is a commitment that will involve you in continuing daily relationship with both supervisor and the people to whom you are ministering. You will find this a unique opportunity to “test the waters” of real ministry and help to confirm your call to ministry. Internships differ from the concurrent semester placements as you will note in this handbook. You are “on your own” during the entire extended period of internship, except that regular contact with the Supervised Ministries Office is maintained by a …

Not To Decide Is To Decide: The U.S. Supreme Court's Thirty-Year Struggle With One Case About Competency To Waive Death Penalty Appeals, Phyllis L. Crocker Jan 2004

Not To Decide Is To Decide: The U.S. Supreme Court's Thirty-Year Struggle With One Case About Competency To Waive Death Penalty Appeals, Phyllis L. Crocker

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

In 1995, the U.S. Supreme Court dismissed Rees v. Peyton, a case that had been on its docket since 1965. Rees was a death penalty case in which the petitioner sought to withdraw his petition for writ of certiorari so that he could be executed. The Court stayed the proceedings after Rees was found incompetent to waive his appeal, but the Court did not dismiss the case until after Rees died of natural causes. Rees pended in the Court during the terms of three Chief Justices. Even though the Court underwent major changes in personnel and philosophy during those years, …

Boys Will Be Girls: Sex Reassignment Surgery And The Ethics Of State Funding, Megan Leslie

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

This paper was developed as a result of the author’s involvement with the Nova Scotia Rainbow Action Project in Halifax, Nova Scotia, who are planning an action whereby a member of the group will submit a complaint of discrimination to the provincial Human Rights Commission, contrary to the Nova Scotia Human Rights Act, on the ground of sex. The complaint will be based on a memberʼs denial of Nova Scotia Medical Services Insurance coverage for sex reassignment surgery, which is prohibited in Nova Scotia. This paper outlines the players and decision-making involved in determining whether or not sex reassignment surgery …

Access Denied: The Problem Of Abused Men In Washington, Melody M. Crick

Seattle University Law Review

This Comment explains how the Washington legislature and court system have failed to provide abused men with much needed protection, despite a law that is facially gender neutral. Following this Introduction, Part II explores the wording of Washington's domestic violence statutes and analyzes the current implementing regulations. Part III demonstrates that the problem of abused men is legitimate by examining increasing social awareness and the results of current studies. By examining the prevailing national viewpoint embodied in the Violence Against Women Act, Part IV discusses how such a viewpoint adversely affects the availability of resources for abused men. Part V …

The Effects Of Hard Rock Music On Aggression In College Students, Jacqueline Goos Jan 2004

The Effects Of Hard Rock Music On Aggression In College Students, Jacqueline Goos

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

The aggression levels of college students was measured after listening to either a hard rock song. The Used's (2002) Maybe Memories, or an upbeat jazz song, Scott Joplin's (1899) The Entertainer. Each song was edited into the background of a neutral video of the South Dakota State University campus. After viewing the short film clip, a modified version of the Buss and Durkee's (1981) Hostility Inventory was completed. The name of the inventory was changed to "Aspects of Personality" to reduce potential bias. The results of this study do not show that hard rock music increased college students' aggression level.

The Effects Of Perceived Disability On The Helping Behavior Of Strangers, Alison E. Finstad Jan 2004

The Effects Of Perceived Disability On The Helping Behavior Of Strangers, Alison E. Finstad

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

The study investigated the effects of perceived disability on the helping behavior of strangers. The investigators, one male and one female, appeared as either disabled or non-disabled, while unknowingly dropping their keys in front of a stranger. The investigators demonstrated three levels of need: no need/ no disability, in which the investigator did not appear in need or disabled; in need/ no disability, in which the investigator carried bags of groceries to appear "in need"; and disabled, in which the investigator used crutches and wore a leg cast. Eighteen randomly selected male and female participants were chosen based on convenience. …

Program Contents Influence On Effectiveness Of Advertising, Sonja Bliss, Doug Boe Jan 2004

Program Contents Influence On Effectiveness Of Advertising, Sonja Bliss, Doug Boe

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

The hypothesis for this study was that program content would have an effect on a person's ability to recall commercials contained in that program. One hundred and seventy-six college students viewed one of three types of programs: a neutral program, a sexually explicit program, or a program that contained vulgarity. All three programs contained the same commercials. Free recall of commercials and cued recall of commercials was assessed. Program content was shown to have a significant effect on the number of commercials freely recalled and the total number of commercials recalled, thus supporting the hypothesis. Today, advertising is a huge …

Effect Of Instruction Type On Successful Completion Of A Task, Trevor A. Clements, Charles Norton Jan 2004

Effect Of Instruction Type On Successful Completion Of A Task, Trevor A. Clements, Charles Norton

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

Instructions play a valuable part in modern society, but their effectiveness is often questioned. In this study, 33 undergraduate students completed a series of simple Lego® tasks using three forms of instructional methods. Step-by-step instructions consisting of written instructions, pictorial instructions, or a combination of the two were tested. The number of correctly completed steps and total time taken for each task was collected. Although there was no difference in accuracy with pictorial or combined instruction types, both written and combined instruction types resulted in greater accuracy. No difference between the pictorial and combined instructions could be found, however. The …

Olfactory Recognition In Couples, Kristin R. Demars, Joshua M. Seezs Jan 2004

Olfactory Recognition In Couples, Kristin R. Demars, Joshua M. Seezs

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

The present study is an attempt to examine if couples can recognize the body odor of their significant other in a t-shirt worn for two days. Nine couples were in the experimental group (couples who had been dating at least six months), while the control group consisted of eight women and seven men (strangers to each other at the beginning of the study). The hypothesis that previous experience improves correct olfactory identification was not supported. When compared to women in the control group, men in the control group were better at recognizing their own shirt. When compared to men in …

Patient Age, Number And Type Of Clinical Encounters, And Provider Advice To Quit Smoking. Brfss 2000, Sean C. Lucan

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study was to determine how often smoking patients receive quit advice and if patient age, and number and type of clinical encounters are associated with odds of receipt. Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) 2000 data were used to study 10,582 smokers (aged ≥ 18) having ≥ 1 of three types of clinical encounters in the past year: routine checkups, other physician encounters, or dental visits. Multivariate-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for quit advice by patient age, encounter type, and number of doctor's visits were calculated. Almost 55% of patients were advised to quit smoking. There was …

Brief Relational Mathematics Counseling As An Approach To Mathematics Academic Support Of College Students Taking Introductory Courses, Jillian M. Knowles Jan 2004

Brief Relational Mathematics Counseling As An Approach To Mathematics Academic Support Of College Students Taking Introductory Courses, Jillian M. Knowles

Educational Studies Dissertations

Traditional approaches to college mathematics support focus on cognitive aspects of the student's approach and only incidentally address affective problems such as mathematics and testing anxiety. Because such affective conditions may be symptoms of underlying relational problems rooted in a student's learning history, I proposed a brief relational mathematics counseling approach that integrates cognitive constructivist mathematics tutoring into a brief relational conflict counseling framework.

Agree Or Not Agree? The Role Of Cognitive And Affective Processes In Group Disagreements, Matthew A. Cronin, Katerina Bezrukova, Laurie R. Weingart, Catherine Tinsley

Psychology

We develop and test a theoretical framework for understanding how cognitive and affective processes (cognitive and affective integration) influence the way in which disagreements (task and process) among group members affect their performance (individual and group level performance). We use this framework to explain how and why diversity may be either beneficial or detrimental to group process and outcomes. Specifically, we examine how group faultlines may hinder members' ability to create a shared understanding of the problem (cognitive integration) and a shared motivation to synthesize their knowledge (affective integration). If this happens, then groups will fail to share and process …

Does Prison Harden Inmates? A Discontinuity-Based Approach, Keith M. Chen, Jesse M. Shapiro Jan 2004

Does Prison Harden Inmates? A Discontinuity-Based Approach, Keith M. Chen, Jesse M. Shapiro

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Some two million Americans are currently incarcerated, with roughly six hundred thousand to be released this year. Despite this, little is known about the effects of confinement conditions on the post-release lives of inmates. Focusing on post-release criminal activity, we identify the causal effect of prison conditions on recidivism rates by exploiting a discontinuity in the assignment of federal prisoners to security levels. We find that harsher prison conditions are associated with significantly more post-release crime.

Chronic Pain: The Extra Burden On Canadian Women, Marta Meana, Robert Cho, Marie Desmeules Jan 2004

Chronic Pain: The Extra Burden On Canadian Women, Marta Meana, Robert Cho, Marie Desmeules

Psychology Faculty Research

Health Issue: Chronic pain is a major health problem associated with significant costs to both afflicted individuals and society as a whole. These costs seem to be disproportionately borne by women, who generally have higher prevalence rates for chronic pain than do men.

Key findings: Data obtained from 125,574 respondents to the Canadian Community Health Survey (2000–2001) indicated that 18% of Canadian women suffered from chronic pain, compared to 14% of men. This gender discrepancy, however, seemed to be linked primarily to differences in age, income, and education between adult men and women in this large sample. Age, income, depression …

An Analysis Of Mentorship In Michigan Police Agencies, Jeffrey G. Swanson Jan 2004

An Analysis Of Mentorship In Michigan Police Agencies, Jeffrey G. Swanson

Masters Theses

The purpose of this research is to investigate how newer police officers are familiarized into their agency with respect to the manner in which they were trained and mentored. The concept of mentoring programs has been highly successful in the private and business sectors for many years. Since the concept of formal mentoring programs in law enforcement is largely limited to date, this study incorporates research in several other disciplines, to determine if there may be a corollary regarding law enforcement and other disciplines, and if so, to what degree mentoring exists among patrol officers. A survey was distributed to …

Joke-Making Jews /Jokes Making Jews: Essays On Humor And Identity In American Jewish Fiction, Jason Paul Steed

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Beginning from the premise that humor plays a prominent role in the construction of group and individual identities, as a social phenomenon and a simultaneously alienating and assimilating force, these essays explore and examine humor and its construction of American Jewish identity within the context of various works of American Jewish fiction. Though organized as "chapters," the essays do not build upon one another progressively, nor do they center on a unified thesis; rather, each is written to stand alone; however, each approaches the general subject of humor and identity in American Jewish fiction, and as a collection it is …
