The Effectiveness Of Demonstration In Training Office Ergonomics, Lisa M. Harrison Jan 2004

The Effectiveness Of Demonstration In Training Office Ergonomics, Lisa M. Harrison

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study, an extension of research reported by Cameron (1997), examines the effectiveness of a demonstration in training clerical workers in office ergonomics principles. The effectiveness was evaluated based on 4 factors: (1) reaction to training; (2) ergonomic knowledge; (3) work-related body-part discomfort (WBPD); and (4) directly observed workstation modifications. Office personnel at the University were trained in office ergonomics with Cameron’s PC-3-D-ME instructional materials. PC-3- D-ME is an instructional approach that addresses both intrinsic factors (work technique) and extrinsic factors (workstation adjustment). Half of the participants received Cameron’s PC-3-D-ME training literature in the form of a booklet. The other …

Feminist Voices In The Debate Over Single-Sex Schooling: Finding Common Ground, Rosemary C. Salomone Jan 2004

Feminist Voices In The Debate Over Single-Sex Schooling: Finding Common Ground, Rosemary C. Salomone

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

This article examines the deep divide within feminist ranks with an eye toward proposing a constructive and essential role for feminist understandings as single-sex schooling inches its way toward legal acceptability and into the mainstream of educational reform. In doing so, the forces that have shaped competing perspectives on women's equality are examined, especially disagreements over sameness and difference. In the end the article looks to the Court's decision in United States v. Virginia as a road map for feminists to follow in reaching common ground on the approach, despite seemingly profound ideological differences among them.

Representations Of The Philippine Stock Market And Securities Research, And Global Financial Regularization, Benjamin T. Tolosa Jr Jan 2004

Representations Of The Philippine Stock Market And Securities Research, And Global Financial Regularization, Benjamin T. Tolosa Jr

Political Science Department Faculty Publications

While the current turmoil in global finance seems to support calls for

“transparency,” “accountability,” and “professionalization,” closer analysis reveals disjunctures in the dominant discourse on corporate governance, whose central element is the promotion of “investor confidence”

and “shareholder value.” This essay draws on the theoretical work of Pierre Bourdieu and Stuart Hall to examine how representations of the

stock market and securities research in the Philippines regularize particular interests, identities, relations, and hierarchies in the global political economy. But it also shows how these representations reveal

underlying tensions in the discourse that open up spaces for rearticulating and reordering financial …

A Rapid Situation Analysis Of The Access To Care Project In Northern Thailand, Ratana Panpanich Jan 2004

A Rapid Situation Analysis Of The Access To Care Project In Northern Thailand, Ratana Panpanich

HIV and AIDS

A rapid situation analysis (RSA) study, supported by the Horizons program, was undertaken to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the Thai government’s Access to Care (ATC) project in northern Thailand. The ultimate aim of the study was to make recommendations for action that will improve the quality of the antiretroviral (ARV) therapy that clients receive and to enhance their adherence to HAART. The RSA has shown high levels of support for the ATC project from health providers, HAART clients, their relatives, and even those who had dropped out of the program. However, the RSA has also shown that there …

Public Posting As A Strategy To Increase Walking: A Worksite Intervention, Rayleen Earney, Timothy J. Bungum Jan 2004

Public Posting As A Strategy To Increase Walking: A Worksite Intervention, Rayleen Earney, Timothy J. Bungum

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Because most American adults do not meet recommended physical activity guidelines, the need for new and innovative strategies is apparent. The current study employed public posting in an attempt to increase walking behavior in a worksite setting. Pedometer generated data was publicly posted in a prominent location in the worksite. In our study that utilized a pre-experimental design, we found that walking steps were statistically higher during the intervention and in a post intervention period as compared to the baseline data. We conclude that the public posting of physical activity data has the potential to increase walking behavior.

Teaching Not Knowing: Reflections On A Writing Practice, Terry A. Moher Jan 2004

Teaching Not Knowing: Reflections On A Writing Practice, Terry A. Moher

Doctoral Dissertations

Donald M. Murray (1994) proposes that the practice of teaching composition engages us in a process of "teaching not knowing." In this inquiry, I draw from theories in composition, psychology, epistemology, ethics, and communication to portray and describe this practice in my high school classroom. Studying my students' writing processes and our interactions in writing conferences, I describe a philosophical stance that approaches teaching writing as improvisational, dialogic and relational. This reflection explores the conditions and attitudes which enhance our capacities to teach writing processes and adopts discourse outside of composition theory that may inform our practices in teaching writing. …

The Role Of Frontal Cortical-Basal Ganglia Circuits In Simple And Sequential Visuomotor Learning, Kathleen R. Bailey Jan 2004

The Role Of Frontal Cortical-Basal Ganglia Circuits In Simple And Sequential Visuomotor Learning, Kathleen R. Bailey

Doctoral Dissertations

Imaging, recording and lesioning studies implicate the basal ganglia and anatomically related regions of frontal cortex in visuomotor learning. Two experiments were conducted to elucidate the role of frontal cortex and striatum in visuomotor learning. Several tasks were used to characterize motor function including: a visuomotor reaction time (VSRT) task, measuring response speed and accuracy to luminance cues; simple stimulus-response (S-R) learning, measuring VSRT improvements when cues occurred in consistent locations over several trials; and a serial reaction time (SRT) task measuring motor sequence learning. SRT learning was characterized by incremental changes in reaction time (RT) when trained with the …

Shifting Worlds: Leading Educational *Change In A Quantum Universe, Mary O Douglas Singer Jan 2004

Shifting Worlds: Leading Educational *Change In A Quantum Universe, Mary O Douglas Singer

Doctoral Dissertations

The twentieth century theories of quantum physics and chaos theory in mathematics have had an impact across disciplines, but in many ways educational leaders have been trapped in the old Newtonian paradigm. The conceptual portion of this study bridges the paradigms to suggest new ways to view school leadership for the twenty-first century, using New Science constructs, systems thinking, and leadership concepts of business writers Senge (1990) and Wheatley (1992). It argues that such business models are appropriate for school organizations, and builds a conceptual model of a quantum principal who may participate in creating change through transformation (Burns, 1978) …

Arthur Raper: Modern Realist In The New Deal South, Louis Mazzari Jan 2004

Arthur Raper: Modern Realist In The New Deal South, Louis Mazzari

Doctoral Dissertations

Arthur Raper was a progressive sociologist and controversial voice for racial and social equality in the South during the 1920s and 1930s. Son of a white, North Carolina farm family, Raper became allied with modernist voices at Chapel Hill and the University of Chicago. Raper's research was widely discussed through the region and greatly influenced Southern race relations in the years leading to the civil rights movement.

Raper was the first white southerner to look critically and scientifically at the causes of racial violence. The Tragedy of Lynching (1933) was reviewed in hundreds of Southern newspapers and discussed throughout the …
