Chicago's Home For The Aged And Infirm Colored People: A Paradigm For Examining Community Viability Among African-Americans In 20th Century Chicago, Susan C. Reed, Nancy Davis

College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Faculty and Staff Works

For decades. African Americans, faced with enortnoiis exclusion by the majority population, built hundreds of social institutions to provide basic services for their commutiities. The history of the Chicago's Home for Aged and Infirm Colored People illustrates changes in African American leadership in community institutions that coincided with shifting demographic patterns and the rise of the Civil Rights movement. Middle class leaders retnaitied committed to the home after migration accelerated and decreasing membership in women s social clubs diminished available resources. Implications for the historical role of the Black middle-class in sustaining comtnunity institutions are discussed.

Effective Reading Comprehension Strategies For Native American Adolescents With Reading Difficulties, Mary C. La Velle Jan 2004

Effective Reading Comprehension Strategies For Native American Adolescents With Reading Difficulties, Mary C. La Velle

All Graduate Projects

The need for culturally appropriate reading comprehension pedagogy for Native American Adolescents was studied in light of multicultural philosophies. The historical trend to assimilate this group of students rather than acknowledge their unique contributions was an area targeted for improvement in this project. A need was established to target reading comprehension since the evidence points to a lack of explicit instruction in this area for middle school students. Strategies for promoting reading comprehension were identified in a teacher's manual that will be used in conjunction with the novel, Walk Two Moons, by Sharon Creech. Colville Tribal Elders discussed the comprehension …

The Curb Center At Vanderbilt: Panel Discussion On Federal Regulation And The Cultural Landscape, Office Of The Ustr, And Popular Media, Bill Ivey

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

This is the Curb Center's first conference. I'm delighted that it's on this topic because it really goes to the heart of what this center is all about. That is, we are looking at a specific kind of content in the U.S. cultural policy world. We are looking at policies and practices of America's arts industries, at legislation, and regulation as the combined sources of U.S. cultural policy. We are also going at it with, I think, a very special and novel kind of process. We are determined to be dedicated to the process of connecting scholars and industry leaders …

Toward A Constitutional Law Of Crime And Punishment, Markus Dirk Dubber Jan 2004

Toward A Constitutional Law Of Crime And Punishment, Markus Dirk Dubber

UC Law Journal

Procedural criminal law is heavily constitutionalized, whereas substantive criminal law has largely escaped constitutional scrutiny. In this Article, Professor Dubber lays out a framework for the development of a general constitutional law of crime and punishment, with a particular emphasis on the general and special part of substantive criminal law. Constitutional criminal law, Dubber argues, rests on the concept of respect for the autonomy and dignity of persons that is reflected in such constitutional guarantees as the right to due process and the proscription against cruel and unusual punishments.

The Pros And Cons Of The Learned Helplessness Construct And The Battered Woman Syndrome: A Critical Analysis And Possible Reformulation, Lucille Andreozzi Stern Jan 2004

The Pros And Cons Of The Learned Helplessness Construct And The Battered Woman Syndrome: A Critical Analysis And Possible Reformulation, Lucille Andreozzi Stern

Open Access Dissertations

Two prevailing, contrasting theories, learned helplessness and health psychogenesis, have been proposed to describe and explain the battered woman's experience and response to domestic violence. This research examined the status (scientific adequacy) of each theory's database to determine where the preponderance of evidence lies.

The investigator articulated nine factors that differentiate the two theories. Trained independent raters then rated study outcomes as falling into one of three categories: pro-learned helplessness, pro-health psychogenesis, or supportive of both theories. Studies of two research samples (shelter and community) were identified and assessed (rated) along four methodological dimensions (sample, instrumentation, statistical analysis, and hypothesis …

"Go In Peace. But Go!", Robert Rimbo Jan 2004

"Go In Peace. But Go!", Robert Rimbo

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

Early in my episcopacy, I was having a dinner conversation with a number of bishops including then Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, George Anderson. It was a rough time for me, as it often is early in a first term. I had been struggling with a few congregations with a number of issues, principally that the ELCA was not their parents' church anymore. Anyway, while we were talking. Bishop Anderson summarized my feelings precisely: "Sometimes you just want to say, 'Go in peace. But go!"'

Resilience In Ex-Refugees From Cambodia And Vietnam, Lynne Ee Lin Yong Jan 2004

Resilience In Ex-Refugees From Cambodia And Vietnam, Lynne Ee Lin Yong

Open Access Dissertations

The negative impacts of various forms of trauma on the physical and mental health of victims are well documented, including the experiences of the French Indo-Chinese, who suffered a range of traumatic experiences ranging from displacement to torture. However, a sizable percentage of French Indo-Chinese refugees living in the U.S. do not exhibit psychopathology. Very little is known about the Indo-Chinese refugees who are not seeking services and are doing well in their host country. This study focused on resilient Cambodian and Vietnamese ex-refugees, with the goal of identifying resiliency factors and their underlying processes, in order to inform the …

Older Lesbian Perspectives On Advance Care Planning For The End Of Life, Jean W. Powell

Open Access Dissertations

This study used grounded theory methodology and in-depth interviews with 12 older lesbians to investigate three research questions: (1) How do participants define and engage in the process of end-of-life planning? (2) Are there special issues associated with end-of-life planning that participants believe are different from those faced by heterosexual women? and (3) How do participants describe a good death and what steps might make a good death more likely? The participants consisted of an ethnically diverse sample of 12 self-identified lesbian women between 60 and 80 years of age. Each participant responded to semi-structured interview questions. Each interview was …

A Tri-Cultural Look At Legitimacy And Illegitimacy Using An Evolutionary Model, Mara D. Giles Jan 2004

A Tri-Cultural Look At Legitimacy And Illegitimacy Using An Evolutionary Model, Mara D. Giles

Nebraska Anthropologist

The rules for legitimacy and illegitimacy are not universal, yet every culture classifies its children into valid and invalid A review of the literature, including Teichman, Hendrix, and Davis, has indicated that legitimacy is a status of marriage. This status is determined by several factors including race, class, inheritance patterns, lineage systems, the role of fathers, and the position of women. European and subSaharan African cultures use these factors differently to validate the boundaries separating the legitimate from the illegitimate. Until as recently as thirty years ago, English culture asserted that a man had to be proven to be the …

The Effects Of Goal Contingencies On The Writing Frequency Of Undergraduates Enrolled In A Learning Strategies Course., Bridget Joy Hayes Russell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examined the effect of goal contingencies on writing frequency. Sixty participants were divided into three conditions: individual goal, group goal, or control. Each week, students participated in a three-minute free-write. Those in the individual goal condition earned 10 bonus points when writing frequency goals were achieved. Those in the group goal condition earned 10 bonus points when the group writing frequency goals were achieved. The control did not receive bonus points contingent on writing frequency. Results indicated that the control and individual goal contingencies conditions wrote greater numbers of words than the group goal contingencies condition. Further, the …

A Constructed Peace: Narratives Of Suture In The News Media, Jody L. Madeira Jan 2004

A Constructed Peace: Narratives Of Suture In The News Media, Jody L. Madeira

Articles by Maurer Faculty

In the aftermath of violent crime, survivors are confronted by questions of comprehension, healing, normalcy, accountability, and restoration. These same issues are communicated to audiences via mass media coverage of the crime and ensuing legal proceedings that focuses upon survivors while they are in the public eye - and while those suspected of the crime are in the defendant's chair. Such stories bring a human face to the innocents most affected by the outcome of the proceedings, relaying their involvement in and response to legal developments from arrest to execution. This paper examines these chronicles through the lens of narrative …
