Civic Engagement Among Low-Income And Low-Wealth Families: In Their Words, Amanda Moore Mcbride, Margaret S. Sherraden, Suzanne Pritzer Jul 2004

Civic Engagement Among Low-Income And Low-Wealth Families: In Their Words, Amanda Moore Mcbride, Margaret S. Sherraden, Suzanne Pritzer

Center for Social Development Research

Through in-depth interviews with 84 low-income, low-wealth families, we find civic engagement across a range of behaviors, e.g., volunteering through religious organizations, neighboring, involvement in children’s activities, and contributing. Data are suggestive of a modified life cycle theory of engagement as well as a “stakeholding” theory, highlighting assets as resources and incentives for action. Time constraint is noted as a primary mediator. Possible implications for measurement, future research, and social interventions and policies are discussed.

Mathematics Teachers’ Knowledge Base: Preliminary Results, Guershon Harel, Kien Lim

Departmental Papers (Math)

Student learning depends on the teacher’s actions, which are, in turn, dependent on the teacher’s knowledge base—defined here by three components: knowledge of mathematics content, knowledge of student epistemology, and knowledge of pedagogy. The purpose of this study is to construct models for teachers’ knowledge base and for their development in an on-site professional development project.

Cost-Effectiveness In Individual Development Accounts, Mark Schreiner, Guat Tin Ng, Michael Sherraden Jul 2004

Cost-Effectiveness In Individual Development Accounts, Mark Schreiner, Guat Tin Ng, Michael Sherraden

Center for Social Development Research

Because resources are limited, the benefits and costs of social-work interventions—like all interventions—must be compared with the benefits and costs of alternatives. Evidence-basedpractice should ask not only “What works?” but also “How well does it work?” and “What does it cost?” Unfortunately, evaluations of social-work practice—like evaluations in any field—rarely can measure all the relevant variables. In particular, benefits are extremely difficult to measure. Costs are simpler to measure, but even so, few evaluations measure costs. In the end, all evaluations are inevitably incomplete and so must make subjective judgments aboutunmeasured factors. The key to evaluation, then, is not certainty …

The Impacts Of Household Wealth On Child Development, Trina Williams Shanks Jul 2004

The Impacts Of Household Wealth On Child Development, Trina Williams Shanks

Center for Social Development Research

Using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, this study examines the influence of wealth relative to income across several child development outcomes. The wealth measures include net worth and whether the household has certain specific asset holdings. The child development measures cover two domains: academic achievement and socio-emotional behavior. The intent is to examine which measures of wealth have the most explanatory value with respect to child development outcomes and test whether these are distinct from income. Results show that wealth is a significant predictor of two out of three dependent variables and that these predictors have different …

Measuring Saving, Mark Schreiner Jul 2004

Measuring Saving, Mark Schreiner

Center for Social Development Research

Development depends on saving. But what exactly is saving, and how is it measured? This paper defines saving and describes several measures of financial savings in the context of Individual Development Accounts, a new policy idea that provides matches for poor people who save for home purchase, post-secondary education, and microenterprise. The proposed measures of savings take into account the passage of time and the three stages of saving: putting in (depositing), keeping in (maintaining a balance), and taking out (withdrawing). Together, the measures help describe how people move financial resources through time.

Support For Microenterprise As Asset-Building: Concepts, Good Practices, And Measurement, Mark Schreiner Jul 2004

Support For Microenterprise As Asset-Building: Concepts, Good Practices, And Measurement, Mark Schreiner

Center for Social Development Research

This paper proposes that building assets—be they human, financial, or social—plays a fundamental role on the development of microenterprise, that is, very small businesses owned by people of modest means. This new view expands beyond the current focus on training and loans to include savings services and networks of social capital. This is useful because most new ventures depend more on savings than on loans and because social networks are key—if invisible—business assets that people of modest means often lack. The outputs of microenterprise-support programs and the intermediate and final outcomes of self-employment can also be seen (and measured) in …

Socioeconomic Perspectives On Infant Mortality In Alabama, James O. Bukenya Jun 2004

Socioeconomic Perspectives On Infant Mortality In Alabama, James O. Bukenya

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Socioeconomic and demographic variables are examined in a maximum likelihood spatial lag framework to determine conditions influencing infant survival in Alabama using county-level data. The analysis is motivated by the basic premise that economic development and unidimensional health interventions such as immunization programs are not enough to ensure constant mortality decline in low-income regions. The results suggest that differences in socioeconomic factors can explain a large portion of the variation in child mortality rates among counties and across races in Alabama. The results also concur with prior conclusions that maternal and infant health remains an important reflection of the social …

Double Dissociation Between The Effects Of Peri-Postrhinal Cortex And Hippocampal Lesions On Tests Of Object Recognition And Spatial Memory: Heterogeneity Of Function Within The Temporal Lobe., Boyer D Winters, Suzanna E Forwood, Rosemary A Cowell, Lisa M Saksida, Timothy J Bussey Jun 2004

Double Dissociation Between The Effects Of Peri-Postrhinal Cortex And Hippocampal Lesions On Tests Of Object Recognition And Spatial Memory: Heterogeneity Of Function Within The Temporal Lobe., Boyer D Winters, Suzanna E Forwood, Rosemary A Cowell, Lisa M Saksida, Timothy J Bussey

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

It is widely believed that declarative memory is mediated by a medial temporal lobe memory system consisting of several distinct structures, including the hippocampus and perirhinal cortex. The strong version of this view assumes a high degree of functional homogeneity and serial organization within the medial temporal lobe, such that double dissociations between individual structures should not be possible. In the present study, we tested for a functional double dissociation between the hippocampus and peri-postrhinal cortex in a single experiment. Rats with bilateral excitotoxic lesions of either the hippocampus or peri-postrhinal cortex were assessed in tests of spatial memory (radial …

Graying Population Employment: Attraction And Retention Of Future Older Knowledge Workers, Roseann Becker Jun 2004

Graying Population Employment: Attraction And Retention Of Future Older Knowledge Workers, Roseann Becker

Theses and Graduate Projects

In the next ten years, the so-called Baby Boomer generation will be entering traditional retirement age and could potentially leave the work force in large numbers. Implications are clear that by 2010, many Boomers will need to be replaced by middle-aged and younger workers. Indications point to a significant projected labor shortage.

Previous research reveals that few CEO's recognize future labor issues as a pending management challenge. The objective of this research was to survey the human resources personnel at some of the best companies to work for and see if they are ramping up for potential labor shortages and …

2004 Gender Study Of The New Jersey Public Relations Society Of America, Megan A. York Jun 2004

2004 Gender Study Of The New Jersey Public Relations Society Of America, Megan A. York

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to determine the climate of New Jersey Public Relations Society of America, 2004. The researcher sought to find logical alternatives to the much-touted theory of the "glass ceiling," that many researchers blame for salary differential between the genders. E-mail surveys were distributed to research salary, title, industry, experience, etc.

Although NJPRSA men and women have much in common, not everything is mutual. The average male is older and more experienced. Overall female dominance continues in the trade, including in two of the three highest-paying industries. Most respondents were in management positions; however, men occupy …

Exploring The Association Between Length Of Residence And Community Attachment: A Research Note, Gene L. Theodori Jun 2004

Exploring The Association Between Length Of Residence And Community Attachment: A Research Note, Gene L. Theodori

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Empirical examinations of the systemic model of community attachment have emphasized the relative importance of certain sociodemographic factors. Among them, length of residence generally has been viewed as the key variable influencing attachment to one's community. Despite the vast number of articles documenting the main effects of length of residence on community attachment, no published papers investigating the interactions between length of residence and additional important systemic-model and/or community-level predictors were uncovered in the literature. Using data collected in a general population survey from a random sample of individuals in two rural communities in Texas, I explore the main effects …

Caring As Catalyst; A Model For Health Possibilities, Brenda A. Becker Jun 2004

Caring As Catalyst; A Model For Health Possibilities, Brenda A. Becker

Theses and Graduate Projects

This graduate field project presents a conceptual model based on the theoretical frameworks of Brentano, Frankl, Rogers, Merry, Benner, and Wrubel and is designed to facilitate the life journey to more complex levels. The model has a foundation in chaos theory and in the search for meaning. Key concepts of catalyst, presence, polarization, and participation are defined and described. Presence is defined at three levels: physical, psychological, and therapeutic. Participation is defined as a sharing of the life and experience between nurse and person. Polarization, or change in pattern, is also defined at three levels: active, collaborative, and passive. The …

The Impressions Of New Jersey High School Guidance Counselors On The Quality Of Education At Rowan University, Carolyn A. Krehel

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis provides a comprehensive examination of New Jersey guidance counselors' impressions of Rowan University. Rowan University, a state funded school, is a rapidly improving and growing institution in the state and its region. However, the University is met with much opposition from those who remember it as a small teachers' college in South Jersey.

This thesis focuses on the history of the university, old impressions of the school, current impressions of the school and recommendations on how to improve the overall awareness and perception of the University.

An email survey was mailed to 1,000 school counselors in the six …

Hearing The Difference: A Computer-Based Speech-Perception Diagnostic Tool For Non-Native Speakers Of English, Justin Reed Shewell

Theses and Dissertations

This project was completed to fill a need in the field of pronunciation teaching and learning by providing a computer-based, speech-perception diagnostic tool that helps determine learners' problem areas in the perception of English speech. Current diagnostic tools are few and very limited in their scope and application in the language classroom. The Perception of Spoken English Test diagnoses learners' specific speech perception problems, alerting teachers to areas that require special attention in a particular course or lesson. This project involved the development, production, piloting, evaluation, and revision of a computer-based instrument in an intensive English program. The data collected …

The Perceived Impact Of The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (Idea), 1997 Disciplinary Mandates On The School Board Policies In Three Urban, K-12 Public School Districts, Nancy S. Zambito Jun 2004

The Perceived Impact Of The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (Idea), 1997 Disciplinary Mandates On The School Board Policies In Three Urban, K-12 Public School Districts, Nancy S. Zambito

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In 1990 the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) required that states provide a free and appropriate education to all children and youth with disabilities, no matter how severe the disabilities. This obligation was tied to federal funding and outlined in detail parental rights with regard to identifying and educating their child with disabilities. The 1997 reauthorization of IDEA stepped into school discipline, creating a complex process for addressing school misconduct of such students.

This study determines how the 1997 IDEA disciplinary mandates, as they existed until May 2003, were interpreted and implemented in three similar, urban, public school districts …
