Investigations For Ergonomic Presentation Of Ais Symbols For Ecdis, Florian Motz, Heino Widdel, Parry Oei, Scott Mackinnon, Lee Alexander

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Empirical investigations were carried out in a research project for the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building, and Housing to evaluate the presentation of AIS target information on ECDIS. The investigations were performed at three international simulation centres. The features, colour and fillingjsize of AIS symbols, as well as the influence of the ECDIS display category on the detection of AIS targets were the main issues of the investigations. Results show that blue (5-52 colour token RE5BL) is the most suitable colour of the tested colours for the presentation of AIS targets under all ambient light conditions on the tested …

Job Applicant Faking Of Overt Integrity Tests: Fact Or Fantasy?, Caitlin Stewart Aug 2004

Job Applicant Faking Of Overt Integrity Tests: Fact Or Fantasy?, Caitlin Stewart

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Integrity tests are among the least utilized pre-employment selection instruments due, at least in part, to concern regarding the ease at which applicants can successfully fake their responses. The current study attempted to assess the extent to which actual job applicants fake overt integrity tests. We assigned one group of applicants to an honest condition and one group to a standard response condition. Applicants in the honest condition received a set of instructions that were modified to illustrate the importance of responding as honestly as possible when completing the questionnaire, whereas the standard response condition received a set of instructions …

Aging And The Effects Of Prior Expectancies In Contingency Judgment, Laura Strain Aug 2004

Aging And The Effects Of Prior Expectancies In Contingency Judgment, Laura Strain

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study examined how prior expectancies affect young and older adults' contingency judgments. Participants completed contingency problems representing all combinations of expectancy (positive, negative, unrelated, and unknown) and contingency (positive, negative, and zero). I originally predicted that the largest age differences would emerge when both the expectancy and the contingency were strong and incongruent, regardless of the nature of the expectancy. However, age differences in the effect of expectancy were strongest when the expectancy was positive and the contingency was Incongruent, and older adults' judgments were more biased by this expectancy. Likewise, I predicted that there would be no age …

Exploration Of The Relationship Between Moral Judgment Development And Crystallized Intelligence, Kristy Jones Aug 2004

Exploration Of The Relationship Between Moral Judgment Development And Crystallized Intelligence, Kristy Jones

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Recent studies have reported different findings about how moral judgment as defined by the Defining Issues Test (DIT; Rest, Narvaez, Bebeau, & Thoma, 1999) relates to verbal intellectual ability. For example, Sanders, Lubinski, and Benbow (1995) argued that DIT scores are reducible to indices that represent verbal intellectual ability. Thoma and his colleagues (Derryberry, Thoma, Narvaez, & Rest, 2000; Thoma, Derryberry, & Narvaez, 2003; Thoma, Narvaez, Rest, & Derryberry, 1999) found support that DIT scores and indices of verbal intellectual ability are separate sources of information. In considering this relationship, these previous studies have most often referred to grade point …

Does Family-Centered Out-Of-Home Care Work? Comparison Of A Family-Centered Approach And Traditional Care., Cathleen A. Lewandowski, Lois Pierce Aug 2004

Does Family-Centered Out-Of-Home Care Work? Comparison Of A Family-Centered Approach And Traditional Care., Cathleen A. Lewandowski, Lois Pierce

Social Work Faculty Publications

This research assessed the effectiveness of a family-centered approach to out-of home core in reunifying children with their families by comparing differential exit rates of children whose families received family-centered services with children whose families received routine child welfare services. The sample included 472 children who were in foster care from 1994 to 1996 in Missouri. Survival analysis was used to calculate the probability that a child would he reunified with his or her family at a particular time and to compare the differential exit rates for the children who experienced subsequent placement during the study period. The authors used …

The Effect Of Experience Upon The Visual And Haptic Discrimination Of 3-D Object Shape, Anna Clayton Aug 2004

The Effect Of Experience Upon The Visual And Haptic Discrimination Of 3-D Object Shape, Anna Clayton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Both our sense of touch and our sense of vision allow us to perceive common object properties such as size, shape, and texture. The extent of this functional overlap has been studied in relation to infant perception (Bushnell & Weinberger, 1987; Gibson & Walker, 1984; Streri, 1987; Streri & Gentaz, 2003), overlap in brain regions (Amedi, Malach, Hendler, Peled, & Zohary, 2001; Deibert, Kraut, Kermen, & Hart, 1999; James, Humphrey, Gati, Menon, & Goodale, 2002), and adult perception (Gibson, 1962, 1963, 1966; Klatzky, Lederman, & Reed, 1987; Lakatos & Marks, 1999; Norman, Norman, Clayton, Lianekhammy, & Zielke, 2004). The Impact Of Racial Identity Attitudes On The Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy Of African American Undergraduate Students, Tamara A. Johnson Aug 2004

The Impact Of Racial Identity Attitudes On The Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy Of African American Undergraduate Students, Tamara A. Johnson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationship between racial identity attitudes and career decision-making self-efficacy. Two hundred and forty-three African American undergraduate students completed a demographic questionnaire, the Cross Racial Identity Scale (Worrell, Vandiver, & Cross, 2000), and the Career Decision-Making SelfEfficacy- Short-Form (Betz and Taylor, 1994). Results from a hierarchial multiple regression revealed a significant negative relationship between career decision-making self-efficacy and pre-encounter self-hatred attitudes, and a significant positive relationship between internalization multiculturalist inclusive attitudes and career decision-making self-efficacy. The other four racial identity attitudes, pre-encounter assimilation, pre-encounter miseducation, immersion-emmersion anti-white, and internalization afrocentricity, were not significant predictors of career decision-making …

The Importance Of Teaching: Ensuring Better Schooling By Building Teacher Capacities That Maximize The Quality Of Teaching And Learning Provision – Implications Of Findings From The International And Australian Evidence-Based Research, Ken Rowe

Student learning processes

Given the level of consensus regarding the importance of school education as an essential element of micro- and macro economic reform, policy issues surrounding school and teacher effectiveness are of particular importance. However, much of the traditional and prevailing dogmas surrounding ‘factors’ affecting students’ experiences and outcomes of schooling throughout their primary and secondary years, especially socio-cultural and socio-economic factors, are now understood to be products of methodological and statistical artifact, and amount to little more than ‘religious’ adherence to the moribund ideologies of biological and social determinism. Above all, a good deal of this ‘discourse’ is not supported by …

Teachers’ Career Decisions In A Cognitive Framework: Logistical Regression Analysis Of A National Data Set, Tamara H. Rosier Aug 2004

Teachers’ Career Decisions In A Cognitive Framework: Logistical Regression Analysis Of A National Data Set, Tamara H. Rosier

Dissertations

Research was conducted in order to determine if extrinsic, cognitive or situative sets of variables could predict teachers' career decisions using the Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS). Questions from the survey were divided into three cognitive perspectives: extrinsic, cognitive, and situative. Stepwise logistic regression analyses were used to predict group membership among those who chose to stay in their current position and those who left the profession.

Results for the extrinsic set of variables indicated that while the model was a good fit, the ability of the model to predict was low. Teachers agreeing that student behavior interferes with ability …

Will Knowledge Of Green Tea Benefits Influence Coffee Consumption?, I-Fang Wang

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many recent studies have focused on the health benefits of green tea consumption. Although there is conflicting evidence, there is a strong trend showing positive effects of green tea to human health. This current study was done to explore whether the knowledge of such green tea benefits will influence the willingness of coffee drinkers to consider switching to green tea consumption. The survey study included a convenience sample of 132 adults who considered themselves regular coffee drinkers. From the statistical analyses of the collected data, results were obtained primarily through frequency distributions and phi coefficients. Data analysis suggested a significant …

The Reliability And Validity Of The Behavior Assessment System For Children In A Rural Setting, Melvin Lee Titus Aug 2004

The Reliability And Validity Of The Behavior Assessment System For Children In A Rural Setting, Melvin Lee Titus

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC) is a behavior rating scale for children from the ages of two and one-half to eighteen-years-old. The BASC original standardization was not representative of 4- to 6-years-old children, particularly in the rural Midwest. The standardization also did not adequately sample children with speech/language impairments. The present study assessed the BASC's reliability and validity (construct and criterion) in comparison to a current BASC, Achenbach's Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and the Conners' Teacher Rating Scale (CTRS) sample. The current BASC study used a sample of rural, 4- to 6-year-old normally-developing children and children with speech/language …

Individualized Marketing® A Travel Behavior Change Program, Debbie Chan

Master's Projects

People are increasingly reliant on their cars for mobility and they are traveling more than ever in frequency and distance. This trend is alarming local governments who not only recognize the negative impacts of automobile use on health and the environment, but also realize that continual construction of roads alone does not provide a long-term solution to roadway congestion. Reducing motorized vehicle use without compromising residents’ mobility has become one of the major objectives of many local government agencies around the world.

Governments have many tools at their disposal to discourage automobile use. They can modify land use policies to …
