Pinyon Jays Use Transitive Inference To Predict Social Dominance, Guillermo Paz-Y-Miño C, Alan B. Bond, Alan Kamil, Russell P. Balda Aug 2004

Pinyon Jays Use Transitive Inference To Predict Social Dominance, Guillermo Paz-Y-Miño C, Alan B. Bond, Alan Kamil, Russell P. Balda

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Living in large, stable social groups is often considered to favor the evolution of enhanced cognitive abilities, such as recognizing group members, tracking their social status and inferring relationships among them. An individual’s place in the social order can be learned through direct interactions with others, but conflicts can be time-consuming and even injurious. Because the number of possible pairwise interactions increases rapidly with group size, members of large social groups will benefit if they can make judgments about relationships on the basis of indirect evidence. Transitive reasoning should therefore be particularly important for social individuals, allowing assessment of relationships …

Variance In Percent Body Fat Between And Within Families As Measured By Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry, Laurel Anne Kelsey

Theses and Dissertations

Objective: To determine the variance in percent body fat between and within families as measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Methods: Percent body fat (%BF) assessed in 95 females, 120 males (included 54 sets of biological siblings) using DXA. Physical activity questionnaire used to assess current physical activity habits in each participant. Results: Variance in %BF between and within families is similar. Amount of television viewing and levels of physical activity can affect %BF. Discussion: A model such as the one derived in this study can be a useful tool in intervention programs implemented to decrease obesity.

Co-Education And Gender: The End Of The Experiment?, Ian Clark

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

This article has two inseparable aims: (a) to analyze the relative merits of single-sex and co-educational constructs on self-concept, academic performance and academic engagement; (b) to investigate the manner in which each type of schooling interacts with the individual student; student “peers,” close family, and teachers.

The Historical And Political Origins Of The Corporate Board Of Directors, Franklin A. Gevurtz Aug 2004

The Historical And Political Origins Of The Corporate Board Of Directors, Franklin A. Gevurtz

ExpressO

Prompted by the litany of complaints about corporate boards – as once again highlighted by recent corporate scandals – this paper seeks to add to the literature on why corporation laws in the United States (and, indeed, around the world) generally call for corporate governance by or under a board of directors. Moreover, this paper takes a very different approach in searching for an answer. Instead of theorizing, this paper examines historical sources in order to look at how and why an elected board of directors came to be the accepted mode of corporate governance. This will entail a reverse …

Marriage Moments: An Evaluation Of An Approach To Strengthen Couples' Relationships During The Transition To Parenthood, In The Context Of A Home Visitation Program, Kimberly Ann Rose Lovejoy

Theses and Dissertations

This study evaluates the efficacy of a self-guided, low-intensity curriculum, Marriage Moments, based on Fowers' (2000) virtues model of marital quality that emphasizes friendship, generosity, justice and loyalty. The Marriage Moments program consists of a guidebook and a video that were designed to strengthen marriages during the transition to parenthood and is used in the context of a home visitation program for first-time parents. Participants in the study included 119 married couples who had recently given birth to their first child. They were assigned to either a treatment, comparison or control group. The treatment group received the Marriage Moments curriculum …

Development Of A Methodology For Non-Intrusive Mental Workload Measurement In On-Road And Simulated Driving, Calvin Ka Lun Or Aug 2004

Development Of A Methodology For Non-Intrusive Mental Workload Measurement In On-Road And Simulated Driving, Calvin Ka Lun Or

Theses and Dissertations

The aim of the research was to develop the non-intrusive physiological measure of using human facial skin temperature change as an indicator of mental workload. The forehead and nose temperature were obtained via thermography from the participants who drove in a simulator driving environment and/or in instrumented car experiments. The NASA TLX and the Modified Cooper-Harper metrics were adopted to assess the subjective workload for the validation of the physiological measure. Three driving experiments were conducted in order to acquire the physiological response and the workload score for the performed tasks. Forehead temperature was very stable throughout the experiments. Nose …

Role Of Actin Cytoskeleton Filaments In Mechanotransduction Of Cyclic Hydrostatic Pressure, Keertik S. Fulzele Aug 2004

Role Of Actin Cytoskeleton Filaments In Mechanotransduction Of Cyclic Hydrostatic Pressure, Keertik S. Fulzele

Theses and Dissertations

This research examines the role of actin cytoskeleton filaments in chondroinduction by cyclic hydrostatic pressurization. A chondroinductive hydrostatic pressurization system was developed and characterized. A pressure of 5 MPa at 1 Hz frequency, applied for 7200 cycles (4 hours intermittent) per day, induced chondrogenic differentiation in C3H10T1/2 cells while 1800 cycles (1 hour intermittent) did not induce chondrogenesis. Quantitative analysis of chondrogenesis was determined as sulfated glycosaminoglycan synthesis and rate of collagen synthesis while qualitative analysis was obtained as Alcian Blue staining and collagen type II immunostaining. Actin disruption using 2 uM Cytochalasin D inhibited the enhanced sGAG synthesis in …

A Study Of The Alternative School Education Program In Mississippi, Teresa Moore Price Aug 2004

A Study Of The Alternative School Education Program In Mississippi, Teresa Moore Price

Theses and Dissertations

Alternative school models should represent options for students characterized as disenfranchised and/or underachievers. Mississippi?s Alternative School Education Program Standards were established to provide a framework for local school districts to use in developing the alternative school?s design to meet the unique needs of the students it would serve. It was established by Mississippi Law to serve as a learning alternative placement for students who had difficulty adjusting to a regular classroom environment or who experienced disciplinary problems in the classroom or at school. Raywid (1999) suggested that unless alternative schools have sufficient freedom to do things differently from the traditional …

Reducing Misunderstanding Of Software Requirements By Conceptualization Of Mental Models Using Pathfinder Networks, Udai Kumar Kudikyala Aug 2004

Reducing Misunderstanding Of Software Requirements By Conceptualization Of Mental Models Using Pathfinder Networks, Udai Kumar Kudikyala

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding and communicating user requirements in a software requirement analysis effort is very important. Misunderstandings of user requirements between stakeholders will cause problems in terms of satisfying their needs, reduction of defects, cost and schedule during the software development process. This dissertation presents a new technique that has the ability to represent the mental models of the user, developers, project managers and sponsors (collectively referred to as ?stakeholders?) as network representations. The requirements are modeled as nodes and the perception of stakeholders is modeled as the interrelationships (links) among the requirements. The requirements are first extracted from a requirements document. …

Byzantine Music Intervals: An Experimental Signal Processing Approach, Kyriakos Michael Tsiappoutas Aug 2004

Byzantine Music Intervals: An Experimental Signal Processing Approach, Kyriakos Michael Tsiappoutas

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

We used a Byzantine Music piece performed by a well recognized chanter in order to derive experimentally the mean frequencies of the first five tones (D – A) of the diatonic scale of Byzantine Music. Then we compared the experimentally derived frequencies with frequencies proposed by two theoretical scales, both representative of traditional Byzantine Music chanting. We found that if a scale is performed by a traditional chanter is very close in frequency to the frequencies proposed theoretically. We then determined an allowed frequency deviation from the mean frequencies for each tone. The concept of allowed deviation is not provided …
