Losing The "Eyes In The Back Of Our Heads": Social Service Skills, Lean Caring, And Violence, Donna Baines

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Violence in the social services work place in general, and the developmental services in particular,h as increased in the last several years. Findingsf rom an ethnographic study suggests that new, lean forms of work organization remove opportunities to use or learn many of the tacit or practice skills workers previously used to keep themselves and their clients safer in the work place. This article describes many of these skills and the new management schemes that remove the possibility to develop or transmit these praxis skills. The article concludes by analyzing the convergence between the new labour processes and the competency …

Supportive Communities, An Optimum Arrangement For The Older Population?, Miriam Billig Sep 2004

Supportive Communities, An Optimum Arrangement For The Older Population?, Miriam Billig

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The preference of older people to stay in their own natural environment requires a reassessment of the approach in dealing with this population group. This exploratory study examines a program conducted in Israel called the "Supportive Community", that provides an emergency call service and other essential services at the homes of older people. A case study was performed in two such supportive communities. Interviews conducted with those who operate the programs and with its members seem to indicate that supportive communities provide a satisfactory solution to the needs of older people who continue to live in their natural environment. Many …

Incentives For Pragmatic Collaborations: Factors For A Win-Win-Win Scenario For Managers, Firms And The Automotive Product Development Industry, Surendra S. Khambete Sep 2004

Incentives For Pragmatic Collaborations: Factors For A Win-Win-Win Scenario For Managers, Firms And The Automotive Product Development Industry, Surendra S. Khambete

Student Scholarship

Global automotive supply chains comprise of an intricate network of suppliers, brokers, manufacturers and customers. Within the industry structure and sometimes within automotive product development programs these firms could be competitors, customers, suppliers or partners at the same time. Firms are revisiting their non-core businesses and outsourcing to a set of strategic suppliers that help them be competitive. The players in the supply chain rarely cater to only one customer and hence it is important to develop a secure network when you know that your customers and suppliers will also be interacting with your competition. Developing this secure network involves …

Debiasing Through Law, Cass R. Sunstein, Christine Jolls Sep 2004

Debiasing Through Law, Cass R. Sunstein, Christine Jolls

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Human beings are often boundedly rational. In the face of bounded rationality, the legal system might attempt either to "debias law," by insulating legal outcomes from the effects of boundedly rational behavior, or instead to "debias through law," by steering legal actors in more rational directions. Legal analysts have focused most heavily on insulating outcomes from the effects of bounded rationality. In fact, however, a large number of actual and imaginable legal strategies are efforts to engage in debiasing through law – to help people reduce or even eliminate boundedly rational behavior. In important contexts, these efforts promise to avoid …

Models Of Electoral System Change, Kenneth Benoit Sep 2004

Models Of Electoral System Change, Kenneth Benoit

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Electoral systems are commonly treated as exogenous determinants of political party systems, yet our theoretical understanding remains limited as to how these institutions themselves are determined. Part of the problem lies with the subject matter itself: electoral system change is frequently idiosyncratic, often occurring during episodes of exceptional political change. Yet another aspect of the problem is that explanations of electoral system change frequently occur piecemeal in application to specific cases, without systematic or comparative development. Addressing both problems, I first survey the existing literature to develop a comprehensive typology of explanations of electoral system change and persistence. I then …

The History Of Desegregation And The Theory Of Student Choice, Sandra K. Woodley, Victoria L. Figiel Sep 2004

The History Of Desegregation And The Theory Of Student Choice, Sandra K. Woodley, Victoria L. Figiel

Essays in Education

Diversity of the student population is legislated and affects recruitment strategies at colleges and university. There is much legal history bringing administrators to the current position. Blending the history of desegregation and the resultant legal situation with the Theory of Student Choice is important to ensure enrollment targets are met. Student choice factors are instrumental in determining which college a student will attend. Understanding which factors influence white students to attend HBCUs, and black students to attend TWIs, is important for administrators and will help them ensure desegregation structural diversity mandates are met. This paper reviews the legal history and …

Enhancing Intrinsic Motivation Through The Use Of A Token Economy, Gess Leblanc Sep 2004

Enhancing Intrinsic Motivation Through The Use Of A Token Economy, Gess Leblanc

Essays in Education

This work will examine the link between intrinsic motivation and external rewards by describing the experiences of twenty-seven academically under-performing adolescents who were enrolled in an after school program in a New York City public junior high school that implemented a token economy. The goals of the implemented token economy were to establish an objective measure of student competence, to enhance student perceptions of their autonomy, and to establish links between their classroom-based learning and its practical “real world” applications. It is argued that by achieving these goals, the token economy serves as a tool for enhancing levels of self-efficacy …

Defining The Effective Teacher: Current Arguments In Education, Tim Markley Sep 2004

Defining The Effective Teacher: Current Arguments In Education, Tim Markley

Essays in Education

The high-pressure educational world of today demands accountability of its practitioners. Legislators are reluctant to increase educational funding without exacting a corresponding increase in accountability. This increase in accountability means that educational leaders must be able to assess and identify quality teachers. To assist in this, educators need to review the current state of evaluation practices. This article provides a review of the history of teacher evaluation and a discussion of emerging trends in teacher evaluation

School Psychologists Walking The Talk In Authentic Teacher Preparation Programs, Mindy Sloan Sep 2004

School Psychologists Walking The Talk In Authentic Teacher Preparation Programs, Mindy Sloan

Essays in Education

Knowledge and skills bases once confined to school psychologists are now considered critical to the functioning of effective teachers (CEC, 2003, NCATE, 2003, Wilson, S. M., Floden, R. E., & Ferrini-Mundy, 2001). This paper uses three assumptions to argue for the inclusion of doctoral level school psychologists in teacher preparation programs. The first assumption acknowledges school psychology’s tradition of consultation with teachers (Bardon, 1990, Brown & Pryzwansky, 2002, Conoley & Conoley, 1992). Second, interdisciplinary teamwork is critical to effective educational planning (National Association of School Psychologists, 2003a, 2003b). Rather than merely informing future teachers that they will collaborate with other …

The Addition Of A Dissociation Module To Dialectical Behavior Therapy, René Keres Sep 2004

The Addition Of A Dissociation Module To Dialectical Behavior Therapy, René Keres

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT; Linehan, 1993a), a manualized treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) was developed before the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual - 4th Ed. (DSM-IV, APA, 1994) added dissociative symptoms to the diagnostic criterion for BPD. Hence, the manual (1993b) did not properly address the assessment and treatment of dissociation, a necessity being mandated by the American Psychiatric Association (Oldham et al., 2001) in their treatment guidelines for BPD. Recent studies (Bohus, et al. 2000; Koons et al. 2001) confirm this hypothesis and have shown that DBT is effective with lower levels of dissociation but does not address more …

Aligning Paper Tests With Multimedia Instruction, Scott L. Howell Sep 2004

Aligning Paper Tests With Multimedia Instruction, Scott L. Howell

Faculty Publications

Although the "click-and-point" virtual classrooms of today hardly resemble the brick-and-mortar classrooms of yesterday, one thing seems to not have changed: the prevalence of paper-based tests. Paper-based tests have been the staple of education for centuries and will most likely persist for many years to come. This article explores some of the issues surrounding the growing chasm between the way students are now taught and how they are still tested from three perspectives: researcher, student, and teacher.

Understanding The Glory Of God Through The Expository Preaching By Young Sun Park, Young Han Park Sep 2004

Understanding The Glory Of God Through The Expository Preaching By Young Sun Park, Young Han Park

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this project is to understand the glory of God through the expository preaching by Young Sun Park. The reason I write this thesis is that I was called and challenged to be a preacher and pastor by God, after listening to the sermon by my pastor, Young Sun Park.

What does it mean to bring Glory to God?

How can it be realized? God the Father took glory through the ministry and personality of His Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ. God receives glory by saving sinners and by our obedient living which can be demonstrated through worship …

The Sympathetic Discriminator: Mental Illness And The Ada, Elizabeth Emens Sep 2004

The Sympathetic Discriminator: Mental Illness And The Ada, Elizabeth Emens

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Discrimination against people with mental illness occurs in part because of how those with mental illness can make other people feel. A psychotic person may make others feel agitated or afraid, for example, or a depressed person may make others feel sad or frustrated. Thus, a central basis for discrimination in this context is what I call hedonic costs. Hedonic costs are affective or emotional costs: an influx of negative emotion or loss of positive emotion. In addition, the phenomenon of emotional contagion, which is one source of hedonic costs, makes discrimination against people with mental illness peculiarly intractable. Emotional …

A Qualitative Investigation On Consumer Trust In Mobile Commerce, Keng Siau, Hong Sheng, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Sidney A. Davis Sep 2004

A Qualitative Investigation On Consumer Trust In Mobile Commerce, Keng Siau, Hong Sheng, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Sidney A. Davis

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Mobile commerce represents a significant development in e-commerce, offering accessibility, ubiquity, mobility, and localisation to users. Despite the potential of mobile commerce, trust is a major obstacle in its adoption and development. Many consumers feel uncomfortable with the idea of conducting commerce over wireless, hand-held devices. The focus of this research is to understand trust in mobile commerce and to identify factors that are important for trust development. The research builds on Siau and Shen's framework which depicts two key factors influencing trust in mobile commerce. This research not only validates and expands on the existing framework, but also provides …

Postmodern Influence In Family Therapy Research: Reflections Of Graduate Students, Katherine M. Hertlin, Jennifer Lambert-Shute, Kristen Benson Sep 2004

Postmodern Influence In Family Therapy Research: Reflections Of Graduate Students, Katherine M. Hertlin, Jennifer Lambert-Shute, Kristen Benson

The Qualitative Report

Postmodernism has influenced family therapy in significant ways, from clinical work to family therapy research. Little has been written, however, on how to conduct postmodern research in a manner reflecting marriage and family therapy inquiries. The present study seeks to investigate doctoral students understanding of postmodern family therapy research. Using collaborative language theory and collaborative inquiry, students participated in a dialogue to answer several questions: a) what is postmodernism, b) what is postmodern research, c) what does postmodern research look like, and d) what does this mean for the field of marriage and family therapy. Students indicated that postmodern research …
