Teaching Partners: Improving Teaching And Learning By Cultivating A Community Of Practice, Richard A. Holmgren Jan 2004

Teaching Partners: Improving Teaching And Learning By Cultivating A Community Of Practice, Richard A. Holmgren

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The Teaching Partners Program and its follow-up activities demonstrate that a carefully designed faculty tkvelopment program can shift a campus culture to derive significant, measurable benefits for faculty and students. The program seeks to transform the imtitutional culture from one in which teaching is sequestered behind closed doors to one that supports substantive conversations about both the learning-teaching process and the methods by which that process might best be facilitated. Following Shulman’s (1993) lead, the program opens the doors of the classroom, reenvisions teaching as community property, and nurtures informed and sustaining discussion of teaching.

Fostering Diversity In A Faculty Development Organization, Mathew L. Ouellett, Christine A. Stanley Jan 2004

Fostering Diversity In A Faculty Development Organization, Mathew L. Ouellett, Christine A. Stanley

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Since 1994, the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education (POD) has articulated a goal of becoming a more multicultural organization. In support of this goal, POD sponsors two key initiatives: travel and internship grants. This chapter offers an historical overview of the first nine years of these programs, selected perspectives from participants on the individual and organizational benefits of these initiatives, and a context within which to explore how POD is evolving as a multicultural organization and how it may benefit from increased attention to diversity related issues in the future.

Foucault And The Practice Of Educational Development: Power And Surveillance In Individual Consultations, Peter Felten, Diandra Little, Allison Pingree Jan 2004

Foucault And The Practice Of Educational Development: Power And Surveillance In Individual Consultations, Peter Felten, Diandra Little, Allison Pingree

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

A common goal of educational development is to create a neutral, “safe” place for clients in individual consultations. Such an approach, while well intentioned, obscures the multifaceted web of power threading through and around our work. Using Michel Foucault’s theories of sovereign and disciplinary power, we trace the forms that power can take in specific types of consultations (small group instructional diagnosis, course evaluations, and videotape). While power is always “dangerous,” it is less likely to be damaging if we are conscious of its presence and impact—and of our own participation in its complexity.

Product Innovation In Financial Services: A Survey, Christopher O'Brien Jan 2004

Product Innovation In Financial Services: A Survey, Christopher O'Brien

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

This paper considers product innovation in insurance and other financial services, an area where actuaries have an important role. It considers the proposition that there is no unique formula for success and that what works well in one situation may not work well in another. It first examines the sources of ideas for new products and, in particular, the role played by consumers, which is generally regarded as weak. It then looks at how ideas are implemented, with particular importance attributed to cross-functional teams and the formality of the product development process. Then it considers how success is measured (with …

Black Women Administrators In Historically Black Institutions: Social Justice Project Rooted In Community, Gaetan Jean-Marie Jan 2004

Black Women Administrators In Historically Black Institutions: Social Justice Project Rooted In Community, Gaetan Jean-Marie

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Black women are subjected to both racism and sexism; those who achieve privileged status are also the targets of classism. Frazier (1957), in addressing issues of the Black bourgeoisie, said "the frustration of the majority of the women ... is probably due to the idle or ineffectual lives which they lead" (p. 222). These negative judgments are based on the gaze, in other words, who these women "look like" from the outside. We hear a different story when listening to the voices of Black women educators working for social change.

Women In The Superintendency: Opting In Or Opting Out?, Mimi Wolverton, R. Timothy Macdonald Jan 2004

Women In The Superintendency: Opting In Or Opting Out?, Mimi Wolverton, R. Timothy Macdonald

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

The purpose of this article was to report the most common career path to the superintendency in the Northwest. We compared career paths across four subgroups of study participants-male and female superintendents and male and female certificate holders who were not superintendents. First, we sought commonalities in the routes chosen by current male and female superintendents in the study. Second, we examined the career choices of potential superintendency applicants to determine whether they were actually gaining the types of administrative experience required by school boards and search consultants. We concluded with implications for practice based on study findings.

Writing Reflective Case Studies For The Engineering Management Journal (Emj), Timothy Kotnour, Rafael Landaeta

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper's intent is to help authors write reflective case studies for the Engineering Management Journal (EMJ). We offer a process to convert an applied research project with an organization to an EMJ manuscript. Writing a reflective case study is a process of abstracting experiences into approaches, processes, tools, challenges, and "lessons" for a broad audience of engineering managers. This paper serves as a guide for authors to write reflective case studies.

Managing Change In Educational Organization: A Conceptual Overview, Simin Ghavifekr, Mojgan Afshari, Saedah Siraj, Ahmad Zabidi Abdul Razak Jan 2004

Managing Change In Educational Organization: A Conceptual Overview, Simin Ghavifekr, Mojgan Afshari, Saedah Siraj, Ahmad Zabidi Abdul Razak

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

The current globalization era has forced all organizations including educational organizations not only to continue reassessing their practices, but also to develop and enhance the culture of change and innovation. This is necessary to keep them in a dynamic and competitive position. Since change is initiated in response to the emerging needs in an organization, managing change can be considered as planning innovative implementation in order to address organizational needs and sustainability. However, managing the process of change is a crucial task for improving the quality and systematic delivery of teaching and learning in educational organizations. This paper reviews related …

Brief Relational Mathematics Counseling As An Approach To Mathematics Academic Support Of College Students Taking Introductory Courses, Jillian M. Knowles Jan 2004

Brief Relational Mathematics Counseling As An Approach To Mathematics Academic Support Of College Students Taking Introductory Courses, Jillian M. Knowles

Educational Studies Dissertations

Traditional approaches to college mathematics support focus on cognitive aspects of the student's approach and only incidentally address affective problems such as mathematics and testing anxiety. Because such affective conditions may be symptoms of underlying relational problems rooted in a student's learning history, I proposed a brief relational mathematics counseling approach that integrates cognitive constructivist mathematics tutoring into a brief relational conflict counseling framework.

The Messenger Model: Don't Ask, Don't Tell?, Jeffrey L. Harrison Jan 2004

The Messenger Model: Don't Ask, Don't Tell?, Jeffrey L. Harrison

UF Law Faculty Publications

This article makes the case that the messenger model is either tacitly or inadvertently a "don't ask, don't tell" policy when it comes to competitor cooperation. In addition, this article presents an economic framework that explains how such a policy may benefit health care consumers. Finally, it is suggested that the "don't ask, don't tell" policy has created an area of per se legality that precludes an examination designed to distinguish consumer-benefiting practices from those that provide no benefit.

Implementation Of An Individual Professional Development System Using A Web-Accessible Database, Edward R. Lovitt Jan 2004

Implementation Of An Individual Professional Development System Using A Web-Accessible Database, Edward R. Lovitt

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Higher education is looking for ways to encourage new careers in education and retain current faculty working in the field. A successful working relationship between supervisors and faculty is crucial to continued attractiveness of a career in education. These shared relationships exist in "learning organization" models, which are used in professional development offerings that stress the importance of learning by individuals, as a way to benefit the entire institution.

This developmental study focused on building partnerships with supervisors and faculty. These partnerships require contracts or individual development plans that can be reviewed for progress and modified for future needs. The …

Bridging The Gap Between Evidence-Based Innovation And National Health-Sector Reform In Ghana, John Koku Awoonor-Williams, Ellie S. Feinglass, Rachel Tobey, Maya Vaughan-Smith, Frank K. Nyonator, Tanya C. Jones, James F. Phillips Jan 2004

Bridging The Gap Between Evidence-Based Innovation And National Health-Sector Reform In Ghana, John Koku Awoonor-Williams, Ellie S. Feinglass, Rachel Tobey, Maya Vaughan-Smith, Frank K. Nyonator, Tanya C. Jones, James F. Phillips

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Although experimental trials often identify optimal strategies for improving community health, transferring operational innovation from well-funded research programs to resource-constrained settings often languishes. Because research initiatives are based in institutions equipped with unique resources and staff capabilities, results are often dismissed by decisionmakers as irrelevant to large-scale operations and national health policy. This article describes an initiative undertaken in Nkwanta District, Ghana, focusing on this problem. The Nkwanta District initiative is a critical link between the experimental study conducted in Navrongo, Ghana, and a national effort to scale up the innovations developed in that study. A 2002 Nkwanta district-level survey …

Urban Poverty And Health In Developing Countries: Household And Neighborhood Effects [Arabic], Mark R. Montgomery, Paul C. Hewett

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

In the United States and other high-income countries, where most people live in cities, there is intense scholarly and program interest in the effects of household and neighborhood living standards on health. Yet very few studies of developing-country cities have examined these issues. This paper investigates whether in these cities the health of women and young children is influenced by both household and neighborhood standards of living. Using data from the urban samples of 85 Demographic and Health Surveys, and modeling living standards using factor-analytic MIMIC methods, we find, first, that the neighborhoods of poor households are more heterogeneous than …

Popular Perceptions Of Emerging Influences On Mortality And Longevity In Bangladesh And West Bengal, Sajeda Amin, Alaka Malwade Basu Jan 2004

Popular Perceptions Of Emerging Influences On Mortality And Longevity In Bangladesh And West Bengal, Sajeda Amin, Alaka Malwade Basu

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Although new environmental and pathological threats to human survival and longevity have been documented, relatively little is known about how these threats are perceived in the popular imagination. During fieldwork in rural Bangladesh and West Bengal, India, researching the changing costs of and motivations for reproduction, the authors included survey questions on respondents’ perceptions of changing mortality. Child-mortality levels were perceived to have fallen drastically in recent times, but for the middle-aged and the elderly, the past was seen as a better time in terms of health and survival. The decline in adult health is attributed to environmental deterioration and …

Differentials In Life Expectancy And Active Life Expectancy By Socioeconomic Status Among Older Adults In Beijing, Toshiko Kaneda, Zachary Zimmer, Zhe Tang Jan 2004

Differentials In Life Expectancy And Active Life Expectancy By Socioeconomic Status Among Older Adults In Beijing, Toshiko Kaneda, Zachary Zimmer, Zhe Tang

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This Population Council working paper compares estimates of life expectancy and active life expectancy across indicators of socioeconomic status for a cohort of older adults in Beijing Municipality. The aim is to determine whether associations are consistent across indicators and with those typically observed in Western industrialized countries. The research finds that men of higher status experience advantages with respect to life and active life expectancies. Among women, only active life expectancy is significantly greater for those of higher status, but the difference by income is not statistically significant. With respect to the proportion of life spent in an active …

Job Exit Queues: Corporate Mergers And Gender Inequality, Terceira A. Berdahl, Helen A. Moore Jan 2004

Job Exit Queues: Corporate Mergers And Gender Inequality, Terceira A. Berdahl, Helen A. Moore

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Purpose: to explore the experiences of employees in a local bank merger in the United States and examine the concept of job exit queues. We introduce the concept of a job exit queue, which describes how workers position themselves or are positioned by employers to leave jobs and enter new jobs following the announcement of a corporate merger.
Design/methodology/approach: Qualitative interviews with mid-level managers, technical specialists and low status workers during the sale and merger process were conducted and coded thematically. We explore: 1) how workers and managers describe the job search as an “opportunity” or as a recurring cycle …
