An Econometric Analysis Of Infant Mortality, Pollution, And Income In The U.S. Counties, Margarita Yuri Somov
An Econometric Analysis Of Infant Mortality, Pollution, And Income In The U.S. Counties, Margarita Yuri Somov
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
The concept of economic development has broadened to include environmental quality and population health. Interactions between income and pollution, income and health, and pollution and health have been studied separately by researchers from various disciplines. This study attempts to unify several different research strands and analyze simultaneous interactions between population health, measured by the infant mortality rate, pollution, and income in one endogenous system. Socioeconomic, racial, and rural urban disparities in infant mortality, pollution, and income are analyzed. The simultaneous equation system, estimated using the two-stage least squares method, tests whether pollution effects on infant mortality are outweighed by income …

The Effects Of Movement Based Interventions On Doms And Muscle Damage Following Eccentric Exercise, Zainal A. Zainuddin
The Effects Of Movement Based Interventions On Doms And Muscle Damage Following Eccentric Exercise, Zainal A. Zainuddin
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a common symptom experienced by most adults following unaccustomed exercise. It is known that DOMS is peculiar to eccentric exercise that results in muscle damage which is characterized by prolonged loss of muscle function. DOMS and subsequent impaired muscle function, reduces the ability to maximize performance of daily living tasks, and has negative effects on sports adherence and activity based healthy lifestyle. Thus, treatments to ameliorate DOMS and enhance recovery of muscle function are important.
Learning To Belong: A Study Of The Lived Experience Of Homeless Students In Western Australia, Simone Glasson-Walls
Learning To Belong: A Study Of The Lived Experience Of Homeless Students In Western Australia, Simone Glasson-Walls
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This is a phenomenological study of the lived experiences of homeless young people in Western Australia. Its focus is the reasons why homeless young people leave education, although many of them make a serious effort to complete post-compulsory schooling. The study was qualitative, and was designed as an in-depth analysis of the experiences of five young people aged between 15 and 17, all attending the same school. Data collection consisted of two in-depth interviews with each participant, and a focus group discussion with all five. Although the study’s focus as the issue of homelessness and schooling, it quickly expanded when …
The Development And Evaluation Of A Childbirth Education Program For Malawian Women, Address M. Malata
The Development And Evaluation Of A Childbirth Education Program For Malawian Women, Address M. Malata
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Childbirth education provided to women is an Integral aspect of the childbirth experience. In Malawi, midwives face a major challenge because one of their major roles is to provide childbirth information to women. However, there are no existing Childbirth Education Programs to facilitate this process. The purpose of this study was, therefore, threefold. First, it explored childbirth Information needs of Malawian mothers from the perspectives of both mothers and midwives, as well as strategies that would be appropriate to disseminate this childbirth information to Malawian women. Second, it developed a Childbirth Educational Program (CEP) to meet the specific needs of …
In Vitro Propagation Of Some Western Australian Seagrasses, Julia Wilson
In Vitro Propagation Of Some Western Australian Seagrasses, Julia Wilson
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The development of a successful protocol for micropropagating seagrass provides a valuable tool for seagrass-restoration programs and a facility to study their biology (especially their physiology). This work reports on some of the culture requirements of some seagrasses that are commonly found in Western Australia: Posidonia coriacea, P. sinuosa, P. australis and Halophila ovalis. The protocol developed for H. ovalis allows very rapid multiplication and sustainable growth of cultures while the protocol developed for Posidonia requires further development. The culture of Posidonia cariacea proved to be problematic however experimental media that provided insights into its culture conditions. The carbohydrate source …

Determination Of Calories In Food Via Adiabatic Bomb Calorimeter, Kenneth C. Mcgill, Michelle L. Yasechko, Wendy K. Nkari
Determination Of Calories In Food Via Adiabatic Bomb Calorimeter, Kenneth C. Mcgill, Michelle L. Yasechko, Wendy K. Nkari
The Corinthian
The adiabatic bomb calorimeter has been an effective tool in facilitating heat transfer between molecules via combustion reaction. Heat is released from the substance combusted and transferred into another, usually water. The heat transferred is measured and the enthalpy of combustion determined for the combusted material. One such classic experiment is the determination of combustion enthalpy of sucrose, obtaining the calorimeter constant with benzoic acid. The results of an adiabatic combustion experiment can be taken one step further to determine the combustion enthalpy in kcal/g by a simple conversion calculation. Since food nutrition labels report calories per grams of serving …

The ‘Feminization Of Poverty’ In Developing Countries And The Role Of Microfinance In Poverty Reduction, Serah Makka
The ‘Feminization Of Poverty’ In Developing Countries And The Role Of Microfinance In Poverty Reduction, Serah Makka
All Volumes (2001-2008)
This article is by no means a comprehensive analysis of the differences in the economic roles and impacts of men and women in different societies. It serves as a brief overview of the place of women in the economies of the developing world. Without question, women have an active economic role in developing economies. However, the more pressing question is the extent of the role of women, not just as mothers or caretakers of the future, but also as the keys to economic resurgence. This article examines the economic costs of gender discrimination to societies, especially to the economies of …

Questionnaires were sent to members of the American Preventive Care Association and 1,000 randomly selected members of the California Dietetic Association. Sixty-seven preventive care specialists and 579 registered dietitians participated in the study. A modified version of the Attitudes Toward Obesity scale, developed by Bagley, et al. was used to measure attitudes. Preventive care specialists and …
Regulation Of Cra, A Regulatory Gene Of Glycolytic And Gluconeogenic Pathways In Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium, James H. Allen
Regulation Of Cra, A Regulatory Gene Of Glycolytic And Gluconeogenic Pathways In Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium, James H. Allen
Open Access Dissertations
The Cra protein is a global regulator of carbon and energy metabolism for glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. The live oral vaccine candidate, Salmonella typhimurium SR-11 Fad, is unable to utilize gluconeogenic substrates as sole carbon sources and is avirulent and protective in BALB/c mice. Furthemore, the era gene is interrupted in this strain of Salmonella. The cra gene was suspected to be regulated by another global regulator, acetyl phosphate. To further investigate the regulation of the cra gene and to determine if gluconeogenesis is linked to virulence, mutations in the gluconeogenic genes fbp (fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase), maeB (NADP-dependent malic enzyme), and sfcA …
Survival During And After Khmer Rouge, Sara S. Brown
Survival During And After Khmer Rouge, Sara S. Brown
Open Access Master's Theses
My personal life trauma experiences during the Khmer Rouge regime are described in this paper along with applications to Constructivist Self Development Theory (CSDT). This theory provides a basis for understanding the interrelatedness of biological and psychological self adaptation necessary to surviving and maintaining a consistent sense of self and the world. Five areas of self that were described in CSDT and which were applicable to my experiences of trauma are as follows:
- Frame of reference: one's ability of understanding self and world, including spirituality. Although I was only seven years old at the time, somehow I understood the events …

Child Laborers: The World's Potential Future Labor Resources Exploited And Depleted, Rupneet Sidhu
Child Laborers: The World's Potential Future Labor Resources Exploited And Depleted, Rupneet Sidhu
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
At this very moment, child laborers are working in unsuitable and hazardous conditions in both developed and developing nations. The adults, who are the main medium for giving voice to the concerns of the child laborers at the international and national levels, have failed. However, there are some promising international instruments whose full and sincere implementation can aid nations to eliminate at least the worst forms of child labor. Concurrently improving and enforcing national laws will help as well. Moreover, the non-governmental organizations should be recognized for being instrumental in keeping the child labor issues as a priority of the …
Toward A Criminal Law For Cyberspace: Distributed Security, Susan W. Brenner
Toward A Criminal Law For Cyberspace: Distributed Security, Susan W. Brenner
School of Law Faculty Publications
Cybercrime creates unique challenges for the reactive model of crime control that has been predominant for approximately the last century and a half. That model makes certain assumptions about crime, which derive from characteristics of real-world crime. These assumptions do not hold for cybercrime, so the reactive model is not an appropriate means of dealing with online crime. The article explains how modified principles of criminal law can be utilized to implement a new, non-reactive model which can deal effectively with cybercrime. This model of distributed security emphasizes prevention, rather than reaction, which is achieved by holding citizens liable for …
Feasibility Of Localized Management To Control White-Tailed Deer In Forest Regeneration Areas, Tyler A. Campbell, Benjamin R. Laseter, W. Mark Ford, Karl V. Miller
Feasibility Of Localized Management To Control White-Tailed Deer In Forest Regeneration Areas, Tyler A. Campbell, Benjamin R. Laseter, W. Mark Ford, Karl V. Miller
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The deleterious effects of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on forest regeneration are well documented in many forested systems, but potential solutions to these problems on remote landholdings are limited in number and scope. Localized management proposes that a persistent area (<2 km2) of low density can be created by removing all individuals within matriarchal social groups of white-tailed deer. Our objective was to assess the feasibility of using localized management as a tool within forest regeneration areas. We present a comparison of seasonal home-range and core-area size and site fidelity of 148 radiomonitored female white-tailed deer in a forested landscape of the central Appalachians of West Virginia. We also characterized seasonal movements and dispersal. Adult female winter home-range size exceeded those of summer and autumn. Female deer displayed high fidelity, with home-range and core-area overlap being less in autumn than in summer or winter. Dispersal occurred in 1 of 28 (3.6%) female fawns and no deer >1 year old dispersed. Female white-tailed deer on our study site meet the a priori assumptions of localized management. We assert that experimental manipulations based on localized management concepts are prudent.

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Dietary conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) reduces body fat in animals and some humans. Here we show that trans-10, cis-12 CLA, but not cis-9, trans-11 CLA, when added to cultures of stromal vascular cells containing newly differentiated human adipocytes, caused a time-dependent decrease in triglyceride content, insulin-stimulated glucose and fatty acid uptake, incorporation into lipid, and oxidation compared with controls. In parallel, gene expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ and many of its downstream targets were diminished by trans-10, cis-12 CLA, whereas leptin gene expression was increased. Prior to changes in gene expression and metabolism, trans-10, cis-12 CLA caused a robust and …
Health Of The People: The Highest Law?, Lawrence O. Gostin
Health Of The People: The Highest Law?, Lawrence O. Gostin
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Law and ethics in population health are undergoing a renaissance. Once fashionable during the Industrial and Progressive eras, the ideals of population health began to wither with the rise of liberalism in the late twentieth century. In their place came a sharpened focus on personal and economic freedom. Political attention shifted from population health to individual health and from public health to private medicine.
The field of public health law and ethics needs a theory and definition (what is public health law and ethics and what are its doctrinal boundaries?); a well-articulated vision (why should health be a salient public …

Palestinian Refugees In Gaza, Susan Martin, John G. Warner, Patricia Fagen
Fordham International Law Journal
Events since Arthur Helton's death - including the change in leadership of the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli proposal for disengagement from Gaza make it even timelier to examine some "practical solutions." For improving Palestinian lives in the short term, much can be learned from the approaches taken in other refugee situations. This Article begins with background information on Palestinian refugees in Gaza. It then discusses Israeli plans for disengagement from Gaza. In the following section, the Article reviews options for addressing the problems faced by Palestinian refugees in Gaza, utilizing the broader literature devoted to the integration of refugees …

Refugees, Internally Displaced Persons, And International Humanitarian Law, Francois Bugnion
Fordham International Law Journal
The fact that war is the primary cause of people being uprooted prompts us to ask what protection the law of armed conflict affords refugees and displaced persons. How does humanitarian law protect groups of civilians from being forced to flee? What protection does it offer those who have nevertheless been uprooted, and how does that protection interrelate with refugee law? How can the Red Cross and Red Crescent organizations, in particular the International Committee of the Red Cross (“ICRC”), come to the aid of refugees and displaced persons? These are the questions this Article aims to answer. First, however, …
