A Web Design Curriculum For At-Risk Students, Aurelio Garcia Jr.
A Web Design Curriculum For At-Risk Students, Aurelio Garcia Jr.
All Graduate Projects
Students today deal emotionally, physically and socially with many negative influences in their lives. Too frequently they are besieged by violent images, the propagation of illegal drug usage among friends and family as well as other negative environmental influences. These influences create barriers that inhibit student learning and cause students to pull away from friends, teachers and school. The implementation of a web design curriculum will help provide struggling students an opportunity to reconnect with school through the use of technology. The web design curriculum lessons also provide activities that address bullying, harassment, drug and alcohol abuse, tobacco usage, suicide …

Beginning A Book Swap Room: A Quantitative And Qualitative Study, Mari Lynn Stangland
All Graduate Projects
Many children do not have adequate access to print. To rectify this in her school, the author created an ongoing Book Swap Room. The author documented the reading growth of students by looking at their reading test data in conjunction with records of the number of books traded in the Room. A family survey was used on three occasions to determine book ownership in the home of students, and a student survey was used to determine whether the Book Swap Room was achieving its desired goal of reinforcing book ownership. Though results were mixed and inconclusive, the author has seen …

Sexual Dimorphism, Allometry And Vertebral Scute Morphology In Notochelys Platynota (Gray, 1834), Timothy R. Brophy, Carl H. Ernst
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Sexual dimorphism, allometry, and vertebral scute morphology were studied in the Malayan flat-shelled turtle, Notochelys platynota (Gray, 1834). Adult males (mean CL = 238.29 ± 50.68 mm, range 130.5-282.0, n = 16) were, on average, larger than adult females (mean CL = 203.48 ± 52.50 mm, range 125.3-330.0, n = 44). The five largest individuals in the study, however, were females (283-330 mm CL). The SDI value for this species was calculated as -1.17. Sexual dimorphism of the shell was not evident when examined by ANCOVA. The regression slopes of males and females differed significantly (P < 0.05) in only one of 26 characters examined. Allometric growth of the shell, however, was evident in N. platynota. Shell shape changed as CL increased proportionally more than shell width, shell height and plastral length (18/26 characters). This allometric growth pattern yields adults with relatively narrower and flatter shells than juveniles. Of 127 specimens examined, 3.9% (n = 5) had five vertebral scutes, 85.0% (n = 108) had six, 10.2 % (n = 13) had seven and 0.8% (n = 1) had eight vertebrals. In specimens with five vertebrals (presumably the ancestral condition), all scutes were large, broader than long, and of similar length. In specimens with six or seven vertebrals, the first four and last vertebrals (Vert6 or 7) were large and broader than long. The smaller supernumerary scutes characteristic of this species were usually found between the fourth and last vertebrals and were occasionally longer than broad (5% of specimens, n = 5). The presence of supernumerary scutes does not affect the relative length of the entire vertebral series, as evidenced by a lack of variation in this character among specimens with five, six and seven vertebrals. Instead, as suggested by an increased width to length ratio of several normal scutes in specimens with six or seven vertebrals, there is a shortening of several normal scutes to accommodate the additional ones. In specimens with six or seven vertebral scutes, the relative lengths of most normal vertebrals (all except Vert1) were noticeably shorter than in specimens with five vertebral scutes. The fourth and last (Vert6 or 7) vertebrals were the shortest of these normal scutes.

Querying Lawrence, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol
UF Law Faculty Publications
In 2003, the Supreme Court in the landmark decision Lawrence v. Texas found a Texas law, banning homosexual, but not heterosexual, sodomy to be unconstitutional. Thus, Lawrence ended the Bowers era in which morality was deemed to be a justification for discrimination against gays and lesbians. While the decision did bring to United States Constitutional analysis the radical idea that gays and lesbians are people too, it stopped short of addressing the real problem the case presents--the existence of a second-class citizenry. This Article examines the Lawrence decision in light of both the international, regional, and foreign jurisprudence and the …
Pest Management Benefits Of Compost Mulch In Apple Orchards, M. W. Brown, Thomas Tworkoski
Pest Management Benefits Of Compost Mulch In Apple Orchards, M. W. Brown, Thomas Tworkoski
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The effect of compost application on weed, fungal, and insect pest management in apple orchards was investigated from 1999 to 2001. Composted poultry manure was applied in June 1999 to half of two small research orchards which had previously received little or no management. The compost provided weed control for 1 year after application. There was no effect of compost on apple scab (Venturia inaequalis) infection. In a laboratory experiment, growth of the brown rot fungus (Monilinia fructicola) was significantly slower on a compost substrate than a sterilized compost substrate. The compost significantly affected arthropod abundance …

Chronological Age-Grading Of Three Species Of Stored-Product Beetles By Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy, Joel Perez-Mendoza, James E. Throne, Floyd E. Dowell, James E. Baker
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The accuracy of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for predicting the chronological age of adults of the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.); the lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica (F.); and the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), three pests of stored grain, was examined. NIRS-predicted age correlated well with actual age of these three species. Age predictions in S. oryzae by using the NIRS method are not dependent upon adult sex or temperatures to which adult weevils are exposed. Results indicated that water content decreased with increasing age in rice weevil adults, and excluding wavelengths at which water absorbs NIR radiation reduced …

Control Of Sawtoothed Grain Beetles (Coleoptera: Silvanidae) In Stored Oats By Using An Entomopathogenic Fungus In Conjunction With Seed Resistance, James E. Throne, Jeffrey C. Lord
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
We tested the hypothesis that the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana would be more efficacious on oat cultivars that prolonged the immature developmental period of sawtoothed grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), a storage pest. However, percentage of reduction in progeny production was similar on whole 'Don' and 'Paul' oats treated with fungus, even though immature developmental time was longer on whole 'Don' than on 'Paul' oats. In our initial test at 10 mg of conidia per kilogram of oats, the number of beetle progeny produced was reduced by 38-67% in whole oats, and there was no effect of the fungus on …

The Effect Of Ionized Bracelets On Pain And Function In Individuals With Arthritis, Jamie Gullickson, Josh Hamilton, Amy Hebl, Rachel Hoffman
The Effect Of Ionized Bracelets On Pain And Function In Individuals With Arthritis, Jamie Gullickson, Josh Hamilton, Amy Hebl, Rachel Hoffman
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Arthritis is a prevalent condition found throughout the entire population. Manifestations of this disease can lead to increased pain in multiple joints leading to decreased functional mobility and limitations in activities of daily living. Ionized bracelets have become an increasingly popular non-traditional, conservative treatment for decreasing pain and improving well-being in persons with multiple diagnoses and body system involvement. Very little research has been conducted on the effects of ionized bracelets; therefore, additional research needs to be conducted to validate these theories.
The purpose of our study is to determine the effect of ionized bracelets on pain and function in …
Family And Medical Leave Act Reform: Is Paid Leave The Answer, Eric Daniel
Family And Medical Leave Act Reform: Is Paid Leave The Answer, Eric Daniel
Cleveland State Law Review
This Note will discuss the current status of the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and the drawbacks of having an unpaid federal leave program. It will explore the inability of the current federal program to achieve the fundamental goal of enabling workers to take time off of work to bond with a newborn child, to tend to an ill relative, or to allow time for recuperation of the employee's own serious health condition. In discussing this shortfall, this Note will focus on the impractical expectation that an employee in one of these situations will be able to spend up to …
Monopoly Leveraging In Verizon Communications V. Law Offices Of Curtis V. Trinko, Llp: Why The United States Supreme Court Should Draw A Clear Line For Anticompetitive Behavior Violative Of The Sherman Act, Anthony J. Lazzaro
Cleveland State Law Review
The Court should draw the line for anticompetitive behavior violative of the Sherman Act above the mere gain of a competitive advantage in the second market. If the Supreme Court were to draw the line at this level, the circuit split and the resulting confusion would be ameliorated. By recognizing the three types of conduct that characterize monopoly leveraging, with the exception to the third type of conduct, the Supreme Court would provide much needed guidance for the lower federal courts in determining whether a firm's behavior in a given case rises to the level of the monopoly leveraging. The …

Effects Of Sham Air And Cigarette Smoke On A549 Lung Cells: Implications For Iron-Mediated Oxidative Damage, Jonathan J. Mayo, Pete Kohlhepp, Dianzheng Zhang, Joy J. Winzerling
PCOM Scholarly Works
Inhalation of airborne pollution particles that contain iron can result in a variety of detrimental changes to lung cells and tissues. The lung iron burden can be substantially increased by exposure to cigarette smoke, and cigarette smoke contains iron particulates, as well as several environmental toxins, that could influence intracellular iron status. We are interested in the effects of environmental contaminants on intracellular iron metabolism. We initiated our studies using lung A549 type II epithelial cells as a model, and we evaluated the effects of iron dose and smoke treatment on several parameters of intracellular iron metabolism. We show that …
Are The Benefits Of Medicine Worth What We Pay For It?, David M. Cutler
Are The Benefits Of Medicine Worth What We Pay For It?, David M. Cutler
Center for Policy Research
Is medical care worth it? Conventional wisdom says no, but my answer is emphatically yes. The benefits that we have received from medical advance are enormously greater than the costs. I suggest that public policy far outweighs the importance of cost containment relative to coverage expansion; we could in fact spend more and get a lot more for our health care dollars. In what follows, I talk about the costs and benefits of medical advance, focusing on two areas where I have done the most work: improvements in cardiovascular disease care and care for low birth weight infants. In each …
