Nutrition Education To Prevent Obesity In School-Aged Children, Marilyn Susanne Lee Jan 2004

Nutrition Education To Prevent Obesity In School-Aged Children, Marilyn Susanne Lee

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

About 15.3% of children ages 6-11 are obese; an 8% increase since 1980. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys have provided nationally representative data on health statistics since the 1960’s. Comparing these surveys, the growing rates of childhood obesity are undeniable, as are the increasing rates of children diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and multiple other conditions associated with obesity. A multitude of theories on the factors that contributed to this trend have been proposed and among those are increasing portion sizes, consumption of high-fat and/or energy-dense fast foods and soft drinks, and an increasingly sedentary lifestyle. Nutrition …

A Center For Holistic Health, Beth Doane

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

One of the leading causes of death in the United States is also one of the most preventable: stress-related illnesses contribute to millions of fatalities every year. Facilitating better health outcomes requires overhauling how we think about health within our culture and how we approach healthcare, emphasizing prevention over treatment. My research investigates how Eastern cultures have embraced this view for centuries, utilizing alternative practices that reduce stress and promote longevity.

I propose developing a non-profit health center, The Center for Holistic Health, founded on preventative care and alternative medicines. Clients will receive autonomy over their health by learning how …

Building Morocco Through Literacy: Women's Participation In Development, Elizabeth L. Holmes Jan 2004

Building Morocco Through Literacy: Women's Participation In Development, Elizabeth L. Holmes

Honors Theses

This thesis examines what factors are important for successful literacy provision in the case of urban Moroccan women. Literacy programs should teach participants not only to decipher symbols on paper, but should provide information relevant to the everyday context of learners' lives. As a result, newly literate individuals should perceive changes in their levels of self-esteem, empowerment, economic status, and health conditions. In Morocco, the government launched a large-scale literacy campaign in May 2003 to lower illiteracy, which currently affects about half of the population. In conjunction with this campaign, the Moroccan government is increasingly cooperating with NGOs, the principal …

Evaluations And Project Effectiveness : An Investigation Into The Evaluation Processes Of Development Projects In Bolivia, Kristin Saucier Jan 2004

Evaluations And Project Effectiveness : An Investigation Into The Evaluation Processes Of Development Projects In Bolivia, Kristin Saucier

Honors Theses

This study attempts to answer the question, do formalized evaluation procedures contribute to increased project effectiveness? Project effectiveness is defined as the successful attainment of project goals and objectives. According to the literature, evaluations have the potential to improve a project's success by raising awareness of problem areas and offering ways suggestions for improvement. To test this theory, the evaluation systems of seven international development organizations that are currently implementing projects in Bolivia are examined: Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere (CARE), Peace Corps, Project Concern International (pCI), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), United Sates Agency for International Development (USAlD), …

Women Representing Women's Interests In Congress, Carmen R. Allen Jan 2004

Women Representing Women's Interests In Congress, Carmen R. Allen

Masters Theses

Do congresswomen try to represent women's interests in Congress? Are congresswomen more likely than congressmen to sponsor bills dealing with women's issues? In the past, research has shown that women do seem to sponsor more legislation than men that deals directly with women. Research has also shown that women legislators feel that they are responsible for representing the interests of all women. This research looks at bill sponsorship in the U.S. House of Representatives during the 106th and 107th Congresses. The data from these two Congresses show that women do sponsor more women's issue legislation than men do. They also …

Financing For Development, The Monterrey Consensus: Achievements And Prospects, Abdel Hamid Bouab

Michigan Journal of International Law

The International Conference on Financing for Development, held in Monterrey, Mexico, in March 2002, marked the beginning of a new international approach to dealing with issues of development finance. It resulted from a unique process that broke new ground in bringing together all relevant stakeholders in a manner that was unprecedented in inclusiveness. Under the umbrella of the United Nations, all parties involved in the financing for development process contributed to creating a policy framework, the Monterrey Consensus of the International Conference on Financing for Development, to guide their respective future efforts to deal with issues of financing development at …

The New Codex Alimentarius Commission Standards For Food Created With Modern Biotechnology: Implications For The Ec Gmo Framework's Compliance With The Sps Agreement, Aaron A. Ostrovsky Jan 2004

The New Codex Alimentarius Commission Standards For Food Created With Modern Biotechnology: Implications For The Ec Gmo Framework's Compliance With The Sps Agreement, Aaron A. Ostrovsky

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Note makes two assertions. First, despite the fact that the Codex guidelines do not specifically invoke the Precautionary Principle in name, it can indeed be read into the guidelines in the amount of deference given to states in how they assess risk. This in turn means that the E.C.'s Deliberate Release Directive should be enjoy a presumption of compliance with both the SPS Agreement and the GATT. The second assertion is that even if the adjudicating body of the WTO finds that the Deliberate Release Directive, in relying on the Precautionary Principle, prescribes a higher level of protection than …

What A Long, Strange “Trips” It’S Been: Compulsory Licensing From The Adoption Of Trips To The Agreement On Implementation Of The Doha Declaration, 3 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 331 (2004), Mark C. Lang

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

Startling numbers of people die every day because they do not have access to essential medicines and treatment for diseases such as HIV/AIDS, particularly in Africa and Asia. The Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) was established by the World Trade Organization (WTO) to set a minimum level of protection of intellectual property rights across international borders, as well as promote and protect the welfare of humanity. This Comment reviews the history of the TRIPS Agreement, including the most recent adoption of the WTO relating to the issuance of compulsory licenses. Specifically, this Comment suggests that the …

The Accidental And Inherent Anticipation Doctrines: Where Do We Stand And Where Are We Going?, 4 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 63 (2004), Anne Brown, Mark Polyakov Jan 2004

The Accidental And Inherent Anticipation Doctrines: Where Do We Stand And Where Are We Going?, 4 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 63 (2004), Anne Brown, Mark Polyakov

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

It is often unclear when a prior occurrence or disclosure of a claimed invention falls under the patent law doctrines of inherent or accidental anticipation. Courts have applied various tests in determining whether anticipation is inherent or accidental, and the cases are difficult to reconcile. Tests seemingly dispositive to establish an accident in one case may also appear dispositive to establish inherency. As a result of our analysis, we have developed a two-step test that can be used to reconcile the two doctrines and determine whether a product or process anticipates. The first prong is concerned with whether the prior …

The Constitution At The Threshold Of Life And Death: A Suggested Approach To Accommodate An Interest In Life And A Right To Die, Michael P. Allen Jan 2004

The Constitution At The Threshold Of Life And Death: A Suggested Approach To Accommodate An Interest In Life And A Right To Die, Michael P. Allen

American University Law Review

In the past fifteen years, the United States Supreme Court has decided three cases in which it tentatively began to explore what the United States Constitution has to say about issues that are popularly described as the "right to die." In this article, I suggest that the current state of constitutional analysis does not provide for an effective mechanism for securing an individual's "right to die," at least not without undervaluing a state's interest in the preservation of human life should a state choose to take such a position. In the article, I suggest that it is possible to adopt …

Nutritional Composition Of Selected Traditional Native American Foods, Suzanne Parker Stluka, Mary Lynn Gengler Jan 2004

Nutritional Composition Of Selected Traditional Native American Foods, Suzanne Parker Stluka, Mary Lynn Gengler

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

Food choices have changed among Native American populations. Healthy food choices are subject to lifestyles, cooking skills, nutrition knowledge and the availability of healthy foods. There is a paucity of nutritional information on traditional and cultural Native American foods. Sixteen traditional Dakota recipes were prepared by members of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, Sisseton, South Dakota. These foods were pureed, lyophilized and analyzed for moisture, ash, fat, protein, carbohydrate and individual mineral content using officially accepted methods. The following mineral elements were analyzed: calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and zinc. Methods of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists …

How Large Is The Potential Market Of Microwave Food In China?, Sin Ting Ho, Wing Yan Ho Jan 2004

How Large Is The Potential Market Of Microwave Food In China?, Sin Ting Ho, Wing Yan Ho

Bachelor Degree - Management - Final Year Project

In China, food industry brings huge profit in every year, but the microwave food industry still faces the problem of underdevelopment. To explore the extent of the potential market of microwave food, a research on it can be contributed. However, there are rare similar researches on the circumstances of microwave food in China, so it is valuable to design a research project which particularly focuses on the mainland conditions of microwave food. Shanghai is one of the most desirable places among the major mainland cities. Thus, its market of microwave food can perform as a model for other cities to …

Response Of A Gall-Forming Guild (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) To Stressed And Vigorous Prairie Roses, Mark A. Williams, James T. Cronin Jan 2004

Response Of A Gall-Forming Guild (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) To Stressed And Vigorous Prairie Roses, Mark A. Williams, James T. Cronin

Faculty Publications

Two general hypotheses that describe the relationship between plant quality and host-plant preference of insect herbivores are the plant-stress and plant-vigor hypotheses. We examined the response of a gall-forming guild of insect herbivores associated with prairie rose, Rosa arkansana Porter (Rosaceae), to experimental manipulations of plant stress (addition of NaCl) and vigor (addition of nitrogen; NH4NO3). The most common members of the gall-forming guild on roses are Diplolepis ignota Osten Sacken, D. nodulosa Beutenmüller, and D. rosaefolii Cockerell (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae). The repeated application of nitrogen throughout the growing season to prairie plots resulted in significantly higher plant nitrogen levels and …

Faculty Publications

Levels of hypertension treatment and control have been noted to vary between Europe and North America, although direct comparisons with similar methods have not been undertaken. In this study, we sought to estimate the relative impact of hypertension treatment strategies in Germany, Sweden, England, Spain, Italy, Canada, and the United States by using sample surveys conducted in the 1990s. Hypertension was defined as a blood pressure of 160/95 mm Hg or 140/90 mm Hg, plus persons taking antihypertensive medication. "Controlled hypertension" was defined as a blood pressure less than threshold among persons taking antihypertensive medications. Among persons 35 to 64 …

Impaired Glucose Regulation In Adults In Jamaica: Who Should Have The Oral Glucose Tolerance Test?, Lincoln A. Sargeant, Michael S. Boyne, Franklyn I. Bennett, Terrence E. Forrester, Richard S. Cooper, Rainford J. Wilks

Faculty Publications

Objective. To compare the 1999 World Health Organization (WHO) fasting plasma glucose (FPG) criteria and the WHO 2-hour post-challenge glucose (2hPG) criteria during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in identifying adults in Jamaica with hyperglycemia. As the OGTT is not commonly used in clinical practice, factors associated with the failure of the FPG criteria to detect persons with impaired 2hPG were investigated. Methods. A random sample of 2 096 adults, 25-74 years old, living in the town of Spanish Town, Jamaica, was evaluated for diabetes. After excluding 215 individuals for reasons such as missing data, the remaining 1 881 …

Influence Of Drought Stress On Sweetpotato Resistance To Sweetpotato Weevil, Cylas Formicarius (Coleoptera: Apoinidae), And Storage Root Chemistry, Lixin Mao, Louis E. Jett, Richard N. Story, Abner M. Hammond, Joseph K. Peterson, Don R. Labonte Jan 2004

Influence Of Drought Stress On Sweetpotato Resistance To Sweetpotato Weevil, Cylas Formicarius (Coleoptera: Apoinidae), And Storage Root Chemistry, Lixin Mao, Louis E. Jett, Richard N. Story, Abner M. Hammond, Joseph K. Peterson, Don R. Labonte

Faculty Publications

The effect of drought stress on the resistance of sweetpotato roots to sweetpotato weevil (SPW), Cylas formicarius (Fab.), was studied in 1997 and 1998 in two genotypes ("Beauregard" and "Excel") with different SPW susceptibility. Storage roots produced under drought or normal conditions were tested for adult feeding, oviposition, larval survival and pupal weight in the laboratory under no-choice and free-choice test conditions. The levels of sweetpotato resin glycoside and caffeic acid in the periderm tissue of the roots were also determined. Drought-stressed roots received significantly more SPW eggs under no-choice and free-choice conditions and more feeding punctures under free-choice conditions …

Part I of this article provides an overview of the medical necessity test, and examines the decision-making process pursuant to the test, including who makes coverage determinations and what criteria are used in making them. Part I also sets forth examples of conventional treatments that insurers routinely cover despite their questionable efficacy from a medical necessity perspective. Part II explores CAM disciplines and describes how they differ from conventional medicine. Part III discusses the legal challenges CAM faces and explores the limited extent to which CAM is covered by health insurance and the failure of state laws to provide mandates …

(Under)Mining The Seabed? Between The International Seabed Authority Mining Code And Sustainable Bioprospecting Of Hydrothermal Vent Ecosystems In The Seabed Area: Taking Precaution Seriously, Ikechi Mgbeoji

Articles & Book Chapters

Rapid developments in marine biotechnology and the prospect of sea-bed mining have exposed the inadequacy of legal frameworks to regulation the exploration exploitation, and sharing of the benefits that arise from such marine endeavors. The fact of the matter is that despite the giant strides made in and the huge financial stakes involved in bioprospecting of hydro-thermal vent ecosystems, legal issues raised by profitable biotechnology development through marine scientific research (MSR) are still at an infant and underdeveloped stage. This article evaluates the extent to which the present legal order for the mining of seabed polymetallic nodules with its tangential …
