The Response Of Bareroot Loblolly Pine Seedlings To The Amount And Timing Of Nitrogen Fertilization In The Nursery, Hans Michael Williams, Karen Woodard, Tim Stewart Jan 2004

The Response Of Bareroot Loblolly Pine Seedlings To The Amount And Timing Of Nitrogen Fertilization In The Nursery, Hans Michael Williams, Karen Woodard, Tim Stewart

Faculty Publications

A nursery study was conducted to observe the effects of altering the amount of nitrogen fertilizer at each application on bareroot loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedling morphology, survival and growth. The treatments were an equal amount of fertilizer applied each time, an increasing amount each time, and a schedule characterized by low amounts, high amounts, and low amounts. Six applications of ammonium nitrate (32.5 percent N) were applied between June and August 2000, and for all treatments, a total of 169 kg N per ha was applied. In addition, for each growing season treatment, the seedlings were treated either …

Daily Movements Of Female White-Tailed Deer Relative To Parturition And Breeding, Christopher E. Comer Jan 2004

Daily Movements Of Female White-Tailed Deer Relative To Parturition And Breeding, Christopher E. Comer

Faculty Publications

To assess how white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) herd demographics influence reproductive behaviors, we examined 24-h diel movements of female whitetailed deer relative to parturition and breeding in a low-density population with a near even sex ratio at the Savannah River Site (SRS), South Carolina. We conducted a series of intensive, 24-h radio-tracking periods of 13 females during spring and fall 2002. We compared daily range (ha), rate of travel (m/h), and distance between extreme daily locations (m), among the periods of pre-parturition and post-parturition and pre-, peak-, and post-rut. From pre-parturition to post-parturition, we observed decreases in diel range size …

Red-Cockaded Woodpecker Nestling Provisioning And Reproduction In Two Different Pine Habitats, Richard R. Schaefer, Richard N. Conner, D. Craig Rudolph, Daniel Saenz Jan 2004

Red-Cockaded Woodpecker Nestling Provisioning And Reproduction In Two Different Pine Habitats, Richard R. Schaefer, Richard N. Conner, D. Craig Rudolph, Daniel Saenz

Faculty Publications

We obtained nestling provisioning and reproductive data from 24 Red-cockaded Woodpecker (Picoides borealis) groups occupying two different pine habitats-longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) and a mixture of loblolly (P. taeda) and shortleaf pine (P. echinata)--in eastern Texas during 1990 and 1901. Habitat data were collected within 800 m of each group's cavity-tree cluster. Feeding trips per nest and prey biomass per feeding trip were significantly greater in lohlolly-shortleaf pine habitat. There were few significant correlations between reproductive/provisioning and habitat variables in either pine habitat. Pines dying from infestation by southern pine beetles (Dendroctonus frontalis) were more common in loblolly-shortleaf than in …

2004 Trafficking In Persons Report, U.S. Department Of State Jan 2004

2004 Trafficking In Persons Report, U.S. Department Of State

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents

The State Department is required by law to submit a report each year to the Congress on foreign government efforts to eliminate severe forms of trafficking in persons. This June 2004 report is the fourth annual TIP Report. Although country actions to end human trafficking are its focus, the report also tells the painful stories of the victims of human trafficking—21st century slaves. This report uses the term “trafficking in persons” which is used in U.S. law and around the world, and that term encompasses slave-trading and modern-day slavery in all its forms.

No. 14: Policing Migration: Immigration Enforcement And Human Rights In South Africa, Jonathan Crush, Vincent Williams Jan 2004

No. 14: Policing Migration: Immigration Enforcement And Human Rights In South Africa, Jonathan Crush, Vincent Williams

Southern African Migration Programme

This paper examines reported incidents of human rights abuses and violence directed towards foreigners where government employees have been the perpetrators. We discuss both direct human rights abuses and incidents of violence (with examples drawn from policing exercises such as “Operation Crackdown” and from the detention of undocumented migrants) and institutional violence (such as migration policy development and other executive actions promoting or at least failing to prevent victimisation of foreigners). In many of the reported incidents, law enforcement officials have been the direct perpetrators of the human rights violations.

The South African government is legally responsible for ensuring adherence …

Using Cattle To Reduce Oak Savanna Understory Shrub Abundance: Stocking Rates And Weight Gains, Janet L. Hedtcke, Joshua L. Posner, Martha Rosemeyer Jan 2004

Using Cattle To Reduce Oak Savanna Understory Shrub Abundance: Stocking Rates And Weight Gains, Janet L. Hedtcke, Joshua L. Posner, Martha Rosemeyer

Proceedings of the North American Prairie Conferences

Oak (Quercus spp.) savanna, characterized by widely scattered oaks with an understory of prairie and other specialized species, is one of the most endangered native ecosystems in North America (Nuzzo 1986, Packard and MuteI 1997). The absence of grazing and burning along with the introduction of tillage agriculture are key factors for the loss of this ecosystem. Our objective was to determine the effectiveness of rotational grazing to reduce the shrub layer in degraded oak savannas. This study took place at three sites in southwestern Wisconsin. In this paper, we report on the results of the savanna grazing on …

Adaptive Responses Of Paleoindians To Cold Stress On The Periglacial Northern Great Plains, Alan J. Osborn Jan 2004

Adaptive Responses Of Paleoindians To Cold Stress On The Periglacial Northern Great Plains, Alan J. Osborn

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Archaeologists' cumulative knowledge about Paleoindians has grown substantially during the past two decades, and accomplishments have been impressive. I find, however, that much of the research regarding the archaeology of the Paleoindian period is primarily descriptive and highly particularistic. In this essay, I propose that our understanding of Paleoindian artifact assemblages, associated ecofactual materials, and human remains can be more meaningful within a broader biophysical context. We must ask how the archaeological record of the Late Glacial period might provide paleoanthropologists with greater insights into early hunter-gatherer anatomy, physiology, diet, health, and behavior. I propose that our understanding of hunter-gatherer …

Nf04-605 Smoking Meat And Poultry, Julie A. Albrecht Jan 2004

Nf04-605 Smoking Meat And Poultry, Julie A. Albrecht

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Where there's smoke, there's well-flavored meat and poultry. Using a smoker is one method of imparting natural smoke flavor to large cuts of meat, whole poultry and turkey breasts. This slow cooking technique keeps them tender, too.

Smoking is slowly cooking food indirectly in the presence of a fire. This can be done by using a "smoker," which is an outdoor cooker especially designed for this purpose. Use these simple guidelines for smoking food safely.

Relating Size Of Juveniles To Survival Within And Among Populations Of Chinook Salmon, Richard Zabel, Stephen Achord Jan 2004

Relating Size Of Juveniles To Survival Within And Among Populations Of Chinook Salmon, Richard Zabel, Stephen Achord

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Understanding relationships between the size of individuals and their subsequent survival can not only provide insights into mechanisms of mortality, but can also identify traits to measure for monitoring at-risk populations. We analyzed a data set of more than 54 000 juvenile chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) from 15 populations over five years. The juveniles were tagged during the summer in their freshwater rearing habitats and then recaptured at downstream sites the following spring after an extended rearing and overwintering period. We measured the length and weight of fish at tagging and computed a ‘‘condition index’’ that determined how …

Microbial Responses To In Situ Chemical Oxidation, Six-Phase Heating, And Steam Injection Remediation Technologies In Groundwater, Ann Azadpour-Keeley, Lynn A. Wood, Tony R. Lee, Susan C. Mravik Jan 2004

Microbial Responses To In Situ Chemical Oxidation, Six-Phase Heating, And Steam Injection Remediation Technologies In Groundwater, Ann Azadpour-Keeley, Lynn A. Wood, Tony R. Lee, Susan C. Mravik

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

The evaluation of microbial responses to three in situ source removal remedial technologies— permanganate-based in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO), six-phase heating (SPH), and steam injection (SI)—was performed at Cape Canaveral Air Station in Florida. The investigation stemmed from concerns that treatment processes could have a variety of effects on the indigenous biological activity, including reduced biodegradation rates and a long-term disruption of community structure with respect to the stimulation of TCE (trichloroethylene) degraders. The investigation focused on the quantity of phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) and its distribution to determine the immediate effect of each remedial technology on microbial abundance and …

Ground Water Recharge And Chemical Contaminants: Challenges In Communicating The Connections And Collisions Of Two Disparate Worlds, Christian G. Daughton Jan 2004

Ground Water Recharge And Chemical Contaminants: Challenges In Communicating The Connections And Collisions Of Two Disparate Worlds, Christian G. Daughton

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Our knowledge base regarding the presence and significance of chemicals foreign to the subsurface environment is large and growing-the papers in this volume serving as testament. However, complex questions with few answers surround the unknowns regarding the potential for environmental or human health effects from trace levels of xenobiotics in ground water, especially ground water augmented with treated waste water. Public acceptance for direct or indirect ground water recharge using treated municipal waste water (especially sewage) spans the spectrum from unquestioned embrace to outright rejection. In this paper, I detour around the issues most commonly discussed regarding ground water recharge …

Antioxidant Supplementation And Nasal Inflammatory Responses Among Young Asthmatics Exposed To High Levels Of Ozone, J. J. Sienra-Monge, M. Ramirez-Aguilar, H. Moreno-Macias, N. I. Reyes-Ruiz, B. E. Del Río-Navarro, M. X. Ruiz-Navarro, G. Hatch, K. Crissman, R. Slade, R. B. Devlin, I. Romieu

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

The inflammatory response to ozone in atopic asthma suggests that soluble mediators of inflammation are released in response to oxidant stress. Antioxidants may alleviate additional oxidative stress associated with photochemical oxidant pollution. This study investigates the impact of antioxidant supplementation on the nasal inflammatory response to ozone exposure in atopic asthmatic children. We conducted a randomized trial using a double-blinded design. Children with asthma ( n = 117), residents of Mexico City, were given randomly a daily supplement of vitamins (50 mg/day of vitamin E and 250 mg/day of vitamin C) or placebo. Nasal lavages were performed three times during …

The H4iie Cell Bioassay As An Indicator Of Dioxin-Like Chemicals In Wildlife And The Environment, J. J. Whyte, Christopher J. Schmitt, D. E. Tillitt Jan 2004

The H4iie Cell Bioassay As An Indicator Of Dioxin-Like Chemicals In Wildlife And The Environment, J. J. Whyte, Christopher J. Schmitt, D. E. Tillitt

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The H4IIE cell bioassay has proven utility as a screening tool for planar halogenated hydrocarbons (PHHs) and structurally similar chemicals accumulated in organisms from the wild. This bioassay has additional applications in hazard assessment of PHH exposed populations. In this review, the toxicological principles, current protocols, performance criteria, and field applications for the assay are described. The H4IIE cell bioassay has several advantages over the analytical measurement of PHHs in environmental samples, but conclusions from studies can be strengthened when both bioassay and analytical chemistry data are presented together. Often, the bioassay results concur with biological effects in organisms and …
