Youth Perspectives On Food Safety, Lisa A. Guion, Amy Simonne, Janice Easton

Journal of Extension

Many 4-H and Family and Consumer Science educators are interested in educating 4-Hers about the importance of food safety and preventing foodborne illnesses. Before planning a food safety program, it is important to ask questions that will yield such information as what food safety topics interest 4-Hers and how they want to receive this information. Such questions, as well as others, were asked of 285 4-Hers in an exploratory study. The study's findings provide some guidance to Extension specialist and county faculty who design and deliver food safety education to 4-H youth in their state/county.

Creating An Interactive Home Food Preservation Tutorial In Flash, Brian A. Nummer

Journal of Extension

Many people would agree that they prefer to learn with interactivity, rather than by just reading documents or watching videos. A Web-based learning activity is available online 24/7/365. Macromedia Flash™ is a good authoring option for learning sites, especially where interactivity is desired. A tutorial, Food Preservation Basics, was created using Flash™. The tutorial is basically an elaborate, interactive slideshow. Graphics, text, interactivity, and animation were used to communicate science-based principles in an entertaining manner.

Modeling And Analysis Of Hospital Facility Layout Problem, Amol Shrikrishna Padgaonkar Jan 2004

Modeling And Analysis Of Hospital Facility Layout Problem, Amol Shrikrishna Padgaonkar

Theses

The optimal solution to any facility layout problem is an important aspect and a major concem as it involves significant material handling and transportation cost. The objective is to arrange the departments within the predefined facility boundaries in the way that the interaction between the functions is efficient and the overall movement cost is minimized. While facility layout problems have traditionally focused on manufacturing facilities, there has been little work on analyzing layouts for hospitals. The thesis focuses on hospital facility layout problems (HLP) to (i) minimize the movements of patients and (ii) minimize the movements of accompanying resources such …

Understanding Mental Health Needs Of Southeast Asian Refugees: Historical, Cultural, And Contextual Challenges, Eugenia Hsu, Corrie A. Davies, David J. Hansen

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Research and clinical information pertaining to mental health needs of Asians residing in the United States is limited but growing. There is a tendency to group all persons of Asian descent together and, therefore, the empirical literature does not sufficiently address the mental health needs in specific subgroups. The focus of this article is to understand the mental health needs of one subgroup of Asians-Southeast Asian refugees (SEAR). The main purpose is to review the relevant literature pertaining to Southeast Asian refugees’ experiences and to understand the manifestation of psychiatric disorders by examining historical, cultural, and contextual challenges. Despite the …

Anchisaurus Polyzelus (Hitchcock): The Smallest Known Sauropod Dinosaur And The Evolution Of Gigantism Among Sauropodomorph Dinosaurs, Adam M. Yates Jan 2004

Anchisaurus Polyzelus (Hitchcock): The Smallest Known Sauropod Dinosaur And The Evolution Of Gigantism Among Sauropodomorph Dinosaurs, Adam M. Yates

Postilla

A review of the type and referred specimens of Anchisaurus polyzelus (Hitchcock) and Ammosaurus major Marsh, from the Early Jurassic Portland Formation (Hartford Basin, Newark Supergroup), indicates that the latter is a junior synonym of the former. The material displays derived similarities with sauropod dinosaurs that are not present in their sister group, the prosauropods. Cladistic analysis strongly supports the hypothesis that Anchisaurus polyzelus is the most basal known member of Sauropoda. Thus A. polyzelus becomes the smallest known sauropod. Optimization of femur length using square change parsimony indicates that the lineage leading to Neosauropoda underwent gradual and sustained size …

Department of Horticulture & Landscape Architecture Faculty Publications

Background

It has become increasingly evident that dietary Se plays a significant role in reducing the incidence of lung, colorectal and prostate cancer in humans. Different forms of Se vary in their chemopreventative efficacy, with Se-methylselenocysteine being one of the most potent. Interestingly, the Se accumulating plant Astragalus bisulcatus (Two-grooved poison vetch) contains up to 0.6% of its shoot dry weight as Se-methylselenocysteine. The ability of this Se accumulator to biosynthesize Se-methylselenocysteine provides a critical metabolic shunt that prevents selenocysteine and selenomethionine from entering the protein biosynthetic machinery. Such a metabolic shunt has been proposed to be …

Forage & Grazing Lands: Morphological Characteristics Of Big Bluestem And Switchgrass Plants Divergently Selected For Seedling Tiller Number, Alexander J. Smart, Lowell E. Moser, Kenneth P. Vogel Jan 2004

Forage & Grazing Lands: Morphological Characteristics Of Big Bluestem And Switchgrass Plants Divergently Selected For Seedling Tiller Number, Alexander J. Smart, Lowell E. Moser, Kenneth P. Vogel

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Selection at the seedling stage in grass breeding would be useful if seedling traits were correlated to desired agronomic traits of mature plants. Objectives of this study were to determine if seedlings from big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman) and switchgrass (Panicumvirgatum L.) populations that differ genetically in seedling tiller num- ber differ in mature plant (i) morphological characteristics, (ii) forage yield managed by a three-cut harvest system or a single end-of-season harvest, and (iii) leaf elongation rate. Field experiments were conducted on a Kennebec silt loam soil (fine-silty, mixed, superactive, mesic Cumulic Hapludolls). In addition, greenhouse studies were …

Shakespeare’S Midsummer Fairies: Shadows And Shamen Of The Forest, Patricia, Roy Jan 2004

Shakespeare’S Midsummer Fairies: Shadows And Shamen Of The Forest, Patricia, Roy

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Recent interest in environmental crises has inspired literary critics to consider how the history of ideas shapes our current ecological debates. Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream sets the stage for assessing how Renaissance attitudes towards nature have influenced current ideologies. While the play appears to be a fantasy, it reveals a relationship with nature, both physically and figuratively. The play's excursion into the woods shows an attempt to heal human relationships. Shakespeare's use of the imagery of nature argues in favor of the green world, for it is a world inhabited by shadows and shamen -- or, as Shakespeare calls …
