The Relationship Between State And District Content Standards: Issues Of Alignment, Influence And Utility, Elizabeth Dutro, Sheila Valencia
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
... In this article we report on a study of the relationship between state and local content standards in reading in four states and districts. Through interviews with key personnel in each state, and district and analyses of state and local content standards in reading, we explored the alignment between state and district content standards, the path of influence between the two, and the role of high-stakes tests in state and districts reform efforts. ...

On Sport and Society
Amidst the controversies, the crass commercialism, and the artificiality of the staged teledrama of the Olympics, the main point can too easily get lost. This is a sporting event involving athletes seeking to perform at the highest level, individually or as a team, as they compete against one another, themselves, and the challenges of the sport. What this offers is a drama of its own, showcasing the sporting spirit and offering each of us a window on the possibilities of human achievement.
On The Dressing Method For The Generalised Zakharov-Shabat System, Rossen Ivanov
On The Dressing Method For The Generalised Zakharov-Shabat System, Rossen Ivanov
Articles
The dressing procedure for the Generalised Zakharov-Shabat system is well known for systems, related to sl(N) algebras. We extend the method, constructing explicitly the dressing factors for some systems, related to orthogonal and symplectic Lie algebras. We consider ’dressed’ fundamental analytical solutions with simple poles at the prescribed eigenvalue points and obtain the corresponding Lax potentials, representing the soliton solutions for some important nonlinear evolution equations.

Causation And Attenuation In The Slavery Reparations Debate, Kaimipono D. Wenger
Causation And Attenuation In The Slavery Reparations Debate, Kaimipono D. Wenger
ExpressO
Recent discussions of reparations have noted the difficulty reparations advocates have in showing causation. Criticisms of reparations have focused on the attenuated nature of the harm, suggesting that modern claimants are not connected to slaves, that modern payers are not connected to slave owners, and that modern disadvantages cannot be connected to slavery.
This Article examines attenuation concerns and finds that they come in three related but distinct varieties: Victim attenuation, wrongdoer attenuation, and act attenuation. These three components, defined in this Article, show themselves in a number of interrelated legal and moral arguments. They have important strategic consequences, and …

The Effect Of Ferrous Sulphate On The Electroless Depositionof Co-Fe-P Alloys, Sen-Lin Wang, Qing-Hua Li
The Effect Of Ferrous Sulphate On The Electroless Depositionof Co-Fe-P Alloys, Sen-Lin Wang, Qing-Hua Li
Journal of Electrochemistry
Electroless deposition of Co-P alloy and Co-Fe-P alloy from an alkaline bath, containing sodium hypophosphite as a reducer, boric acid as a buffer agent and sodium citrate as a complexing agent, was investigated respectively. The effects of process parameters, such as pH of solution and metallic salt mole ratio of CoSO4/FeSO4, on the plating rate were examined. It was found that the presence of ferrous sulfate in the bath has an inhibitory effect on the alloy deposition. As a consequence, the plating rate of Co-Fe-P is lower than that of Co-P. The electrochemical polarization measurements have …

Photovoltaics: Disaster And Energy Security Applications, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young
FSEC Energy Research Center®
The modernization of our lives with the use of electronic devices has contributed to a steadily increasing dependence on electric power. The degree of importance of electricity is temporarily highlighted with any type of power outage, whether caused by an accident, a natural disaster or a terrorist attack. A disaster can leave many people without adequate medical services, potable water, electrical service and communications.
There is a value in applying photovoltaics (solar electric) to create disaster-resistant buildings and communities, which is to reduce losses and improve quality of life. Photovoltaics provide a viable source of electric power for energy security …

Synergisms Of Electric Or Electromagnetic Fields And Photodynamic Effects Induce Apoptosis And Necrosis Of Cancer Cells, Radeva Maria, Lambrera Maya, Angelova Plamena, Traitcheva Nelly, Berg Hermann
Journal of Electrochemistry
Weak pulsating sinusoidal electromagnetic fields (PEMF) have been applied to change membrane permeation and induction of apoptosis (necrosis). In the case of suspension of human cancer cells U-937 and K-562 inside of Helmholtz-coils the amplitude of PEMF B=10 and at 39mT (at 50 Hz) was combined gradually with the cytotoxic agent actinomycin-C on one hand with its novel photodynamic activity on the other.
