Treaties, Time Limits And Treasure Trove: The Legal Protection Of Cultural Objects In Singapore, Jack Tsen-Ta Lee
Treaties, Time Limits And Treasure Trove: The Legal Protection Of Cultural Objects In Singapore, Jack Tsen-Ta Lee
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
This article considers the extent to which civil and criminal law in Singapore deters the unlawful removal of cultural objects from the possession of private owners, art galleries and museums, or from archaeological sites, and provides redress to victims. Given Singapore's position as the crossroads of Asia, the law must be able to cope with the flow of objects in and out of the country. The law is currently deficient as it is not tailored to deal with issues concerning cultural heritage, and needs to be reformed in several respects. There are sound reasons for a modern State like Singapore …
Numerical Simulation Of Microwave Heating Of A Target With Temperature Dependent Electrical Properties In A Single-Mode Cavity, Hoa Kien Tran
Numerical Simulation Of Microwave Heating Of A Target With Temperature Dependent Electrical Properties In A Single-Mode Cavity, Hoa Kien Tran
Dissertations
This dissertation extends the work done by Hue and Kriegsmann in 1998 on microwave heating of a ceramic sample in a single-mode waveguide cavity. In that work, they devised a method combining asymptotic and numerical techniques to speed up the computation of electromagnetic fields inside a high-Q cavity in the presence of low-loss target. In our problem, the dependence of the electrical conductivity on temperature increases the complexity of the problem. Because the electrical conductivity depends on temperature, the electromagnetic fields must be recomputed as the temperature varies. We then solve the coupled heat equation and Maxwell's equations to determine …

Assessing risks associated with the release of metals into the environment and managing remedial activities requires simulation tools that depict speciation and risk with accurate mechanistic models and well-defined transport parameters. Such tools need to address the following processes: (1) aqueous speciation, (2) distribution mechanisms, (3) transport, and (4) ecological risk. The primary objective of this research is to develop a simulation tool that accounts for these processes. Speciation in the aqueous phase can be assessed with geochemical equilibrium models, such as MINEQL+. Furthermore, metal distribution can be addressed mechanistically. Studies with Pb sorption to amorphous aluminum (HAG), iron (HFO), …
Modeling Usage Of An Online Research Community, Yi Zhang
Modeling Usage Of An Online Research Community, Yi Zhang
Dissertations
Although online communities have been thought of as a new way for collaboration across geographic boundaries in the scientific world, they have a problem attracting people to keep visiting. The main purpose of this study is to understand how people behave in such communities, and to build and evaluate tools to stimulate engagement in a research community. These tools were designed based on a research framework of factors that influence online participation and relationship development.
There are two main objectives for people to join an online community, information sharing and interpersonal relationship development, such as friends or colleagues. The tools …
Toxicity Of Manufactured Particulate Materials On Plant Root Growth, Ling Yang
Toxicity Of Manufactured Particulate Materials On Plant Root Growth, Ling Yang
Dissertations
The rapid development of particle technology and the growing use of particulate materials in industries are bringing large amounts of manufactured particles into the environment. Epidemiological studies suggest that fine particles (particles with aerodynamic diameter smaller than 2.5 μm, i.e., PM2.5) have an association with various adverse health effects in humans. Mass studies have been performed on the toxicity and toxicological mechanisms of airborne particles such as PM2.5 and PM10, but there are very few investigations which contribute to the knowledge base on biological implications of manufactured particulate materials. Up to now, the published toxicity …

Carrier Transport In Ge Nanowires And One Dimensional Si/Ge Heterojunctions, Eun Kyu Lee
Carrier Transport In Ge Nanowires And One Dimensional Si/Ge Heterojunctions, Eun Kyu Lee
Theses
Ge Nanowires (Ge NWs) on single crystal, (100) and (111) oriented n-type Si substrates were grown via the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism and studied with respect to their electrical properties.
Using different contact geometries, direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) electrical and photoelectrical measurements were carried out at room temperature to investigate electrical properties of Ge NWs and Ge NWs/Si substrate one-dimensional (1 D) heterojunctions (HJs). A rectifying junction behavior is observed at NWs/substrate interface, but many orders of magnitude greater AC conductance than DC in Ge NW volume is measured at high frequencies. The obtained experimental data are consistent …
Ultra Wideband Communication Link, Preeti Singh
Ultra Wideband Communication Link, Preeti Singh
Theses
Ultra-wideband communication (UWB) has been a topic of extensive research in recent years especially for its short-range communication and indoor applications. The preliminary objective of the project was to develop a description and understanding of the basic components of the communication link at microwave frequencies in order to achieve the primary objective of establishing a communication setup at a bandwidth of 2.5 GHz for testing Ultra Wideband (UWB) antennas. This was achieved with the aid of commercially available optical system which was modified for the purpose. Beginning with the generation of baseband narrow pulses with energy spanning over a broad …
Surface Treatment Of Ferrous Alloys With Boron, Naruemon Suwattananont
Surface Treatment Of Ferrous Alloys With Boron, Naruemon Suwattananont
Theses
Boronizing is a thermo-chemical surface hardening treatment in which boron atoms diffused into the metal substrate form the metallic boride layer, providing high hardness, corrosion resistance, and 3-10 times increasing service life. This type of surface treatment is widely used in many applications.
The purpose of this work was to investigate the structures and properties of boronized ferrous alloys. Three types of steels, AISI 1018 (plain low carbon steel), AISI 4340 (high strength alloy steel), and AISI 304 (austenitic stainless steel), were used for this study. The boronized AISI 1018 and AISI 4340 demonstrated the saw-tooth structure with average 75-76 …
Fluidization Of Agglomerates Of Nanoparticles Under Different Force Fields, Jose A. Quevedo
Fluidization Of Agglomerates Of Nanoparticles Under Different Force Fields, Jose A. Quevedo
Theses
Nanoparticles are the focus of many research activities, and in the near future they will be handled in large amounts by industry. Fluidization is a very important unit operation which is applied in several industrial processes.
In the present work, fluidization experiments with agglomerates of nanoparticles were done under different force fields: (1) gravity force or conventional fluidization; (2) a magnetic force field, which uses magnetic particles under the influence of a magnetic field; and (3) a centrifugal force, generated by a rotating frame that simulates higher gravity conditions.
Among the significant results with agglomerates of nanoparticles, conventional fluidization was …
An Ecological Display For Robot Teleoperation, Robert W. Ricks
An Ecological Display For Robot Teleoperation, Robert W. Ricks
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents an interface for effectively teleoperating robots that combines an ecological display of range and video information with quickening based on dead-reckoning prediction. This display is built by viewing range and video information from a virtual camera trailing the robot. This is rendered in 3-D by using standard hardware acceleration and 3-D graphics software. Our studies demonstrate that this interface improves performance for most people, including those that do not have much previous experience with robotics. These studies involved 32 test subjects in a simulated environment and 8 in the real world. Subjects were required to drive the …

Flouting The Law, Janice Nadler
Flouting The Law, Janice Nadler
ExpressO
What happens when a person’s common sense view of justice diverges from the sense of justice he or she sees enshrined in particular laws? In particular, does the perception of one particular law as unjust make an individual less likely to comply with unrelated laws? This Article advances the Flouting Thesis – the idea that the perceived legitimacy of one law can influence one’s willingness to comply with unrelated laws – and provides original experimental evidence to support this thesis. This Article presents new, original evidence that one’s willingness to disobey the law can extend far beyond the particular unjust …
