The Anchor, Volume 118.05: September 29, 2004, Hope College

The Anchor: 2004

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Public Universities And Private Industry: A Case Study, Jeffrey S. Royer Sep 2004

Public Universities And Private Industry: A Case Study, Jeffrey S. Royer

Cornhusker Economics

A report recently released by an external review panel evaluates a controversial five-year contract between the University of California, Berkeley, and Novartis, the Swiss pharmaceutical and agrochemical company now known as Syngenta. The report, which was written by a team of consultants from Michigan State University and released in early August, addresses a number of issues related to the increasingly complex relationship between public universities and private industry. Given the size of the agreement and that it involved an entire academic department, the Berkeley-Novartis contract quickly became a focus for concerns relating to the basic mission of land-grant universities and …

Structural Characterisation Of A Sol-Gel Copolymer Synthesised From Aliphatic And Aromatic Alkoxysilanes Using 29si-Nmr Spectroscopy, Mohamed Oubaha, M. Dubois, B. Murphy, P. Etienne Sep 2004

Structural Characterisation Of A Sol-Gel Copolymer Synthesised From Aliphatic And Aromatic Alkoxysilanes Using 29si-Nmr Spectroscopy, Mohamed Oubaha, M. Dubois, B. Murphy, P. Etienne

Articles

A hybrid organic-inorganic material was prepared from the hydrolytic co-condensation of 3- trimethoxysilylpropylmethacrylate (MAPTMS) and diphenyldiethoxysilane (DPHDES). The synthesis was performed in three steps: (1) MAPTMS pre-hydrolysis, (2) addition of DPHDES, and (3) further hydrolysis of the obtained mixture. 29 Si nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to characterise the structural evolution of the mineral network during the synthesis. It revealed the catalytic effect of DPHDES on the condensation reaction of silanol groups, initially observed for pre-hydrolysed MAPTMS. In addition, it was clearly demonstrated that the formation of the highest condensed species of the aromatic oligomers (D2 species) occurred …

Trumps, Inversions, Balancing, Presumptions, Institution Prompting, And Interpretive Canons: New Ways For Adjudicating Conflicts Between Legal Norms, Carlos E. Gonzalez Sep 2004

Trumps, Inversions, Balancing, Presumptions, Institution Prompting, And Interpretive Canons: New Ways For Adjudicating Conflicts Between Legal Norms, Carlos E. Gonzalez

Rutgers Law School (Newark) Faculty Papers

This article begins by reviewing the axiomatic principles that govern courts when dealing with cases in which two legal norms are interpreted as standing in conflict. The article then makes three distinct contributions.

First, the article explicates the central justification behind the use and perpetuation of the extant principles. In briefest terms, the extant principles are best justified as an attempt to resolve cases in which legal rules stand in conflict in a way that enhances or preserves the democratic legitimacy of law. They do this by favoring norms created by entities of relatively strong democratic legitimacy over norms created …

Multiple Mechanisms Regulate Numa Dynamics At Spindle Poles, Olga Kisurina-Evgenieva, Gary Mack, Quansheng Du, Ian Macara, Alexey Khodjakov, Duane A. Compton Sep 2004

Multiple Mechanisms Regulate Numa Dynamics At Spindle Poles, Olga Kisurina-Evgenieva, Gary Mack, Quansheng Du, Ian Macara, Alexey Khodjakov, Duane A. Compton

Dartmouth Scholarship

The large coiled-coil protein NuMA plays an essential role in organizing microtubule minus ends at spindle poles in vertebrate cells. Here, we use both in vivo and in vitro methods to examine NuMA dynamics at mitotic spindle poles. Using fluorescence recovery after photobleaching, we show that an exogenously expressed green-fluorescent-protein/NuMA fusion undergoes continuous exchange between soluble and spindle-associated pools in living cells. These dynamics require cellular energy and display an average half-time for fluorescence recovery of approximately 3 minutes. To explore how NuMA dynamics at spindle poles is regulated, we exploited the association of NuMA with microtubule asters formed in …
