The Enum Protocol, Telecommunications Numbering, And Internet Governance, Craig Mctaggart Oct 2004

The Enum Protocol, Telecommunications Numbering, And Internet Governance, Craig Mctaggart

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article examines the intersection of technical and governance challenges posed by the ENUM protocol, which bridges traditional telephony and internet systems by converting phone numbers into domain names. It highlights how ENUM's development and implementation have become a focal point for broader debates about internet governance, particularly the balance between national sovereignty and global coordination. The analysis underscores the political and international implications of technical decisions, emphasizing the need for a more neutral and multilateral approach to managing critical internet resources.

Theories Of Cyber-Sociology: Communicating Culture Through Codes, Erica Schlesinger Wass

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article explores the cultural and social significance of country code top-level domains (ccTLDs), arguing that they extend beyond technical identifiers to reflect national identity, values, and priorities. By examining the history, structure, and policies of ccTLDs, the author illustrates how these domains serve as tools for communication, cultural expression, and social change, influenced by a nation's unique history and societal norms.

Adherence Of Prime-Time Television Advertising Disclosures To The “Clear And Conspicuous" Standard: 1990 Vs. 2002, Mariea Grubbs Hoy, J. Craig Andrews Oct 2004

Adherence Of Prime-Time Television Advertising Disclosures To The “Clear And Conspicuous" Standard: 1990 Vs. 2002, Mariea Grubbs Hoy, J. Craig Andrews

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

In 1990, one-fourth of all national television commercials contained disclosures, yet none of the disclosures adhered to all of the Federal Trade Commission's "clear and conspicuous" standard (CCS). As a result of marketplace changes and a 2001 Federal Trade Commission and National Advertising Division joint workshop, the authors anticipate an increase in the number of disclosures and greater adherence to the CCS. The authors find a significant increase in disclosure incidence; however, adherence declines or remains unchanged for most individual guidelines. Finally, the authors provide public policy implications and offer suggestions to increase adherence to the CCS.

Bilingualism And Equality: Title Vii Claims For Language Discrimination In The Workplace, James Leonard Oct 2004

Bilingualism And Equality: Title Vii Claims For Language Discrimination In The Workplace, James Leonard

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Linguistic diversity is a fact of contemporary American life. Nearly one in five Americans speak a language other than English in the home, and influxes of immigrants have been a constant feature of American history. The multiplicity of languages in American society has touched nearly all aspects of American culture, and specifically has added new and important challenges to the American workplace. Chief among these new concerns are the growing number of legal claims centered around language discrimination in the workplace. The common vehicle for these claims has been Title VII, and there is considerable support in the academic literature …
