Family Violence Education In Public Waiting Rooms, Patrick Day, Molly Latham, Geoffrey K. Leigh Oct 2004

Family Violence Education In Public Waiting Rooms, Patrick Day, Molly Latham, Geoffrey K. Leigh

Journal of Extension

Accepting the premise that video instruction is a powerful tool for American audiences, the project discussed here explored the feasibility of using television and videotapes to provide education relevant to family violence and violence prevention to waiting room audiences. Using commercially available videos, volunteer coordinators played the videos to clients of a large social services agency in Las Vegas, Nevada over a period of 18 months. At the end of each viewing, a survey measured the impact of the videos on the audience. Results of the surveys supported the efficacy of this instructional method in providing education to large groups.

On Thacker's Biomedia (2004), Nicholas Ruiz Iii Oct 2004

On Thacker's Biomedia (2004), Nicholas Ruiz Iii

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Only we could have done it. The Code (DNA and its analogs, etc.) that we perhaps only narrate, never forgetting all of the fictions that narration portends, today consciously edits the text that evolution has edited unconsciously for eons. Thacker considers how humans -- perhaps little more than interactive Code, manipulate the Code -- with the technology of the Code. No other faction of Code has yet to make such heady ‘gains.’ Where posthumanity was always a literary endeavor, a literary bypass, out of instrumental science and into fictive states, it now is a technical endeavor, encompassing a …

Cultural Topology: An Introduction To Postmodern Mathematics, Brent M. Blackwell Oct 2004

Cultural Topology: An Introduction To Postmodern Mathematics, Brent M. Blackwell

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[Editors' Introduction]

This essay develops a new way of thinking about the cultural relationships among and within the sciences and the arts through a new understanding of the term postmodernism that at once derives from literary theory and the mathematical discipline of topology. While topology forms the main vertebra of this connective approach in its capacity as the mathematics of connectivity, quantum mechanics and non-Euclidean geometry -- the atlas and axis of this spinal column -- form the context through which this “postmodern” approach will develop. However, in order to position topology as a “postmodern” branch of mathematics, some brief …

A Privatization Of Politics: Anthony Elliot's Concepts Of The Self (2001), Paula Murphy Oct 2004

A Privatization Of Politics: Anthony Elliot's Concepts Of The Self (2001), Paula Murphy

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

It would be difficult to find a more appropriate image of selfhood in the modern world than that found in Ezra Pound's poem In a Station of the Metro. It is a selfhood which is at once unique and conglomerative, fleetingly visible then tantalizingly out of focus. It is this slippery, indefinable entity that is the subject of Anthony Elliot's book. The title bears witness to the enormous breadth of its subject matter: Concepts of the Self is an attempt to engage with the various contemporary theoretical frameworks through which selfhood is explicated. Elliot's approach is admirably inter-disciplinary, …

Multi-D Cfd Modeling Of Free-Piston Stirling Convertor At Nasa Grc, Scott D. Wilson, Rodger W. Dyson, Roy C. Tew, Mounir B. Ibrahim

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

A high efficiency Stirling Radioisotope Generator (SRG) is being developed for possible use in long duration space science missions. NASA s advanced technology goals for next generation Stirling convertors include increasing the Carnot efficiency and percent of Carnot efficiency. To help achieve these goals, a multidimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code is being developed to numerically model unsteady fluid flow and heat transfer phenomena of the oscillating working gas inside Stirling convertors. Simulations of the Stirling convertors for the SRG will help characterize the thermodynamic losses resulting from fluid flow and heat transfer between the working gas and solid walls. …

The Kyoto Protocol: Reflections On Its Significance On The Occasion Of Its Entry Into Force, Meinhard Doelle Oct 2004

The Kyoto Protocol: Reflections On Its Significance On The Occasion Of Its Entry Into Force, Meinhard Doelle

Dalhousie Law Journal

When the Kyoto Protocol was signed in December 1997, there were high hopes in some quarters that it marked the beginning of a global commitment to climate change mitigation. In the past seven years, however, the Protocol has languished while many of the kev, States have done little to implement it. Until the fall of 2004 it was uncertain whether the Protocol would ever enter into force. To the surprise of many, with ratification by Russia, it came into effect on February 16, 2005, only three years before the start of the first period of commitments to reduce greenhouse gas …

Development And Validation Of A Facebook Relational Maintenance Measure, B. Mcewan, J. Fletcher, J. Eden, Erin M. Bryant

Human Communication and Theatre Faculty Research

This manuscript details the construction of a measure of Facebook relational maintenance behaviors. The first study generated an item pool by drawing from previous qualitative investigations and adapting an established relational maintenance scale. Participants were then invited to evaluate these items in order to establish face validity. During study two, participants were asked how often they used the behaviors represented in these items to maintain a specific friendship. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to determine the underlying structure of these items; three latent factors emerged, social contact, response-seeking, and relational assurances. This factor structure was then assessed using confirmatory factor …

The Voice Of China: A Story Of Chinese-Character Domain Names, Hong Xue Oct 2004

The Voice Of China: A Story Of Chinese-Character Domain Names, Hong Xue

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article examines China's efforts to manage and regulate domain names, particularly Chinese character domain names, both domestically and internationally. It highlights the evolution of China's regulatory framework, from academic management to governmental oversight, and its active participation in international policymaking through organizations like ICANN. The core argument revolves around the technical, policy, and sovereignty challenges China faces in integrating its domain name system into the global Internet infrastructure while maintaining national control and promoting inclusivity.

Governing By Negotiation: The Internet Naming System, Tamar Frankel Oct 2004

Governing By Negotiation: The Internet Naming System, Tamar Frankel

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The governance of the Internet naming system is at a critical juncture, characterized by instability and power struggles. ICANN, while central to the system, operates on a precarious foundation due to its short-term contract with the U.S. Department of Commerce, which grants the U.S. significant control. The system's structure is vague, relying on ad hoc decisions rather than fixed rules, leading to a complex interplay between governments, registries, and ICANN. The article employs game theory to analyze these dynamics, highlighting the challenges in balancing structure and flexibility amidst evolving stakeholders' roles and internationalization pressures.

The Origins Of Cctld Policymaking, Peter K. Yu Oct 2004

The Origins Of Cctld Policymaking, Peter K. Yu

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article explores the evolution of country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) policymaking, tracing its transition from an informal, ad hoc system managed by individuals like Jon Postel to a formalized, international governance structure under the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). It highlights the power struggles between various stakeholders, including national governments, ICANN, and the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), and discusses the implications for global internet governance.
