Gender Based Violence In India: A Never-Ending Phenomenon, B. R. Sharma, Manisha Gupta Nov 2004

Gender Based Violence In India: A Never-Ending Phenomenon, B. R. Sharma, Manisha Gupta

Journal of International Women's Studies

Religion, customs, age-old prejudices, etc. have put Indian women in a subservient and exploitable position in many domains of life. Low rates of participation in education, lack of economic independence, value biases operating against them, etc., have resulted in the women being dependent on men folk and other institutions of authority like the family, neighborhood and the society. They are usually ignorant of their rights and even if they are not, they do not have easy access to justice.

The issues related to women are being raised and discussed in various fora, in the recent times. Of these, ‘violence against …

Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, Baha'i, Jewish, and Christian organizations are all experimenting with distance education for various reasons and to different extents, due to religious, economic, and political factors. Religious institutions worldwide are not only turning to the World Wide Web (WWW) to place information concerning religious beliefs and provide virtual services for their constituents but are also getting more involved in formally educating their members at a distance. This paper will document some of these educational efforts and the reasons behind the expanding use of distance education by several of the major religious institutions for training, edifying, and educating their …

Dueling Jackpots: Are Competing Lotto Games Complements Or Substitutes?, Victor Matheson, Kent Grote Nov 2004

Dueling Jackpots: Are Competing Lotto Games Complements Or Substitutes?, Victor Matheson, Kent Grote

Economics Department Working Papers

This paper considers the relationship that exists between two lottery products offered simultaneously in the same state, a smaller lottery game run by the individual state and a larger multi-state game run in coordination with other states. The primary issue is whether the two different products should be considered substitutes or complements for one another. The question is considered from two different perspectives that lead to a conclusion that while the two products do tend to be complements to one another, overall the individually run state lottery games experience a reduction in sales from the presence of the multi-state game.

In response to a request from United Youth Courts of Alaska, we conducted an assessment of volunteer recruitment and sustainability during the Seventh Annual Statewide Youth Court Conference held in November 2003 in Anchorage, AK. We conducted three simultaneous focus groups with a total of 22 youth court volunteers to assess the advantages and disadvantages of volunteering for youth courts and the benefits and costs of continuing to volunteer for youth courts. In particular, we asked youth court volunteers about ways to improve recruitment and sustainability. All youth court volunteers clearly enjoyed their volunteer experience and planned to continue volunteering. …

War Fever Symposium:, Geoffrey R. Stone Nov 2004

War Fever Symposium:, Geoffrey R. Stone

Missouri Law Review

As Justice Robert Jackson observed more than half a century ago, “[i]t is easy, by giving way to the passion, intolerance and suspicion of wartime, to reduce our liberties to a shadow, often in answer to exaggerated claims of security.” Indeed, the United States has a long and unfortunate history of overreacting to the dangers of wartime. Again and again, Americans have allowed fear to the better of them. Some measure of fear, of course, is inevitable—even healthy—in time of war. Otherwise, it would be difficult, if not impossible, for a nation to make the sacrifices war demands. An essential …

The Role Of Silence And Avoidance In Interpersonal Conflict, Alexia Georgakopoulos Nov 2004

The Role Of Silence And Avoidance In Interpersonal Conflict, Alexia Georgakopoulos

Peace and Conflict Studies

Conflict is an inevitable process in relationships. Effective strategies must be used to manage conflict accordingly. If one is to understand how to incorporate effective strategies when dealing with conflict, the emotional experience related to conflict must be understood. The expression of anger is the emotion most associated with conflict; therefore, anger is an important emotion in the assessment of conflict. Anger is associated with arousal that may be traced to have its roots in the evolution of humankind. The emotion of anger is in part biological which links it to dispositional properties and to another extent largely communicative as …

The Welcome Theory: An Explanation For The Decreasing Number Of African Americans In Baseball, David C. Ogden Nov 2004

The Welcome Theory: An Explanation For The Decreasing Number Of African Americans In Baseball, David C. Ogden

Communication Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

The percentage of African Americans on the rosters of major league baseball teams is at a 30-year low, while the percentage of Caucasian players in the major leagues has remained relatively stable. Research indicates that the number of African Americans will continue to drop. The Welcome Theory uses several theoretical perspectives to explore why African Americans have turned away from baseball and embraced other sports, such as basketball. The theory has implications for designing sports programs that socialize youth into sports.

Sustained Growth In Nebraska, Saeed Ahmad, John Austin, Tom Doering, Ernie Goss, Bruce Johnson, Mike Lundeen, Donis Petersan, Franz Schwarz, Eric Thompson, Keith K. Turner

Economics Faculty Publications

National Macroeconomic conditions are favorable for future expansion of income, employment, and revenue in Nebraska. In particular, the U.S. economy is now in the heart of an expansion expected to persist over the three year forecast period. The principal engine of growth will be a sustained expansion in private sector investment and consumption demand. However, the rate of growth in the national economy likely will be moderate rather than rapid. At least three factors will act to moderate growth. The first is higher energy prices. Rapid growth in global demand is expected to keep prices for oil and natural gas …

The Miami Barrel: An Innovation In Forensic Firearms Identification, Thomas G. Fadul Jr. Nov 2004

The Miami Barrel: An Innovation In Forensic Firearms Identification, Thomas G. Fadul Jr.

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The scientific foundation in firearm and tool mark identification is that each firearm/tool produces a signature of identification (striation/impression) that is unique to that firearm/tool, and through examining the individual striation/impressions; the signature can be positively identified to the firearm/tool that produced it. There is no set number of matching striations that are needed for concluding an identification. The inability to identify fired bullets to individual Glock pistols resulted in an in-depth study of Glock's polygonal rifled barrels, which resulted in the manufacturing of the Miami/EBIS Gun Barrel. This research study provided the scholarly research that was needed to determine …

Apocalyptic Terrorism: The Case For Preventive Action, Joseph Mcmillan Nov 2004

Apocalyptic Terrorism: The Case For Preventive Action, Joseph Mcmillan

Strategic Forums

This policy brief examines the growing threat posed by apocalyptic, religiously motivated terrorist movements, particularly al Qaeda, and argues that their ideology, intent, and capabilities require a reassessment of international norms governing the use of force. Unlike earlier terrorist groups constrained by political objectives, apocalyptic terrorists seek mass casualties and reject traditional limits on violence, making purely reactive or law-enforcement approaches inadequate. The brief contends that under certain circumstances states must retain the ability to take preventive action, including military operations on foreign territory, when governments are unwilling or unable to suppress terrorist threats within their borders. Drawing on principles …

Intelligent, Pervasive And Context-Aware Promotion Delivery Framework For Wireless Mobile Devices, Karthik Harihar Nov 2004

Intelligent, Pervasive And Context-Aware Promotion Delivery Framework For Wireless Mobile Devices, Karthik Harihar

Theses and Dissertations

Mobile devices are now powerful systems and are the main vehicles for m- commerce. Market research predicts enormous potential for m-commerce applications and services [9], [10], [11], [12]. Unique features such as portability, location-awareness and personalization make mobile devices effective tools for targeted advertising. Several mobile marketing frameworks have been designed that deliver promotions based on location information and user preferences [3], [4], [5]. These frameworks have several drawbacks that need to be addressed in order to be effective. The aim of this thesis is to research a simple and efficient framework for targeted and personalized advertising. This work presents …

Soil Microfungi In The Forest-Agricultural Landscape Of San Luis, Costa Rica, November 2004, Ellyn Yakowenko Nov 2004

Soil Microfungi In The Forest-Agricultural Landscape Of San Luis, Costa Rica, November 2004, Ellyn Yakowenko

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Soil microfungi are known to play key roles in ecosystem function and are often the first indicators of a breakdown in stability (Volk 2001). This study compares soil microfungal abundance and diversity across a tropical human land use gradient in the San Luis valley of Costa Rica. Microfungi were cultured from soil samples collected from primary forest, secondary forest, pasture, and coffee farm sites using the Soil Dilution Plate Technique (Christensen 2001). Thirty-six soil samples yielded a total of 17,321 isolates of 41 different morphological species. Each habitat type was characterized by the dominance of a few abundant species while …

Epiphytic Lichen Communities On Ficus Spp. Microhabitats In Relation To Canopy Density, November 2004, Tom Mcfarland

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The purpose of this study was to determine if and how much forest canopy density affects the richness and composition of epiphytic lichen communities in Tropical Premontane Moist Forest. Lichen communities on the trunk and in the canopy on nine Ficus trees were examined. Friedman’s test was used to assess differences in lichen richness along a vertical gradient on trees, and Spearman rank test was used to look for a correlation between canopy density and lichen richness. Average habitat breadth between zones and between trees was also calculated. The results showed that there are significant differences in lichen richness across …
