Fear And Risk In Times Of Crisis: The Media's Challenge, Richard C. Reuben Nov 2004

Fear And Risk In Times Of Crisis: The Media's Challenge, Richard C. Reuben

Missouri Law Review

With five to ten minutes to comment at the very end of an intellectually exhilarating two-day symposium, I am quite frankly tempted to say "You know, they've all got a point," and leave it at that. But this has been an important discussion, and in this comment I'd like to at least try to make a small contribution to it.

To Support And Defend The Constitution Of The United States Against All Enemies, Foreign And Domestic: Four Types Of Attorneys General And Wartime Stress, Betty Houchin Winfield

Missouri Law Review

War exacerbates the usual tensions between individual freedoms and national security. In such times, the United States frequently sacrifices its tradition of individual autonomy and deliberative debate for the security and unanimity of an autocratic, military-style government. Individual rights are often the first casualties of hastily enacted legal measures that expand executive power without regard to constitutional checks and balances. While the expansions have generated criticism and calls for greater government accountability, it is often difficult to determine who within the executive should be held accountable. As the President’s chief law enforcement officer, the Attorney General of the United States …

Japan’S Constitution And Defense Policy: Entering A New Era?, Rust Deming

Strategic Forums

This Strategic Forum policy brief examines the evolving debate in Japan over constitutional revision and defense policy reform in the post–Cold War security environment. Focusing on Article IX of the 1947 constitution, which renounces war and restricts military capabilities, the article analyzes pressures driving reconsideration of Japan’s defense posture, including generational change, North Korea’s missile and nuclear programs, China’s growing power, participation in international peacekeeping operations, ballistic missile defense cooperation with the United States, and the Iraq War. The study outlines competing political perspectives—“alliance nationalists,” “internationalists,” and “neo-nationalists”—and assesses their influence on the revision of Japan’s National Defense Program Outline …

A Quantitative Analysis Of Mis Faculty Compensation, Thomas Tribunella, M. Pamela Neely

Presentations and other scholarship

This study examines data collected from the Association for Information Systems 2003 and 2004 MIS Salary Surveys. The relationships between compensation and its possible determinants such as faculty research productivity and school teaching load are analyzed. We find that compensation is significantly correlated with faculty profiles as well as school profiles.

Assessing The Nature Of Science Views Of Singaporean Pre-Service Teachers, Tan L. Thye, Boo H. Kwen Nov 2004

Assessing The Nature Of Science Views Of Singaporean Pre-Service Teachers, Tan L. Thye, Boo H. Kwen

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Despite the many developments in the teaching of science, an aspect that continues to be neglected appears to be the character and nature of science (NOS). This is becoming especially important in the light of recent developments in pedagogy, as, for example, more teachers adopt constructivist methodologies and computing technology enables simulations that may blur the lines between models and reality. From the literature, it is known that teachers' modern NOS conceptions, though not a sufficient condition for transmission of modern NOS views, is necessary. In this study, pre-service teachers' NOS conceptions are assessed with an adapted Views of the …

A 2 Ghz Bandpass Analog To Digital Delta-Sigma Modulator For Cdma Receivers With 79 Db Dynamic Range In 1.23 Mhz Bandwidth, Elias H. Dagher, Peter Stubberud, Wesley K. Masenten, Matteo Conta, Thang Victor Dinh Nov 2004

A 2 Ghz Bandpass Analog To Digital Delta-Sigma Modulator For Cdma Receivers With 79 Db Dynamic Range In 1.23 Mhz Bandwidth, Elias H. Dagher, Peter Stubberud, Wesley K. Masenten, Matteo Conta, Thang Victor Dinh

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

This paper presents the design of a second-order single-bit analog-to-digital continuous-time delta-sigma modulator that can be used in wireless CDMA receivers. The continuous-time delta-sigma modulator samples at 2 GHz, consumes 18 mW at 1.8 V and has a 79-dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) over a 1.23-MHz bandwidth. The continuous-time delta-sigma modulator was fabricated in a 0.18- m 1-poly 6-metal, CMOS technology and has an active area of approximately 0.892 mm2 . The delta-sigma modulator's critical performance specifications are derived from the CDMA receiver specifications.

High-Threshold, Kv3-Like Potassium Currents In Magnocellular Neurosecretory Neurons And Their Role In Spike Repolarization, Talent Shevchenko, Ryoichi Teruyama, William E. Armstrong Nov 2004

High-Threshold, Kv3-Like Potassium Currents In Magnocellular Neurosecretory Neurons And Their Role In Spike Repolarization, Talent Shevchenko, Ryoichi Teruyama, William E. Armstrong

Faculty Publications

We identified Kv3-like high-threshold K+ currents in hypothalamic supraoptic neurons using whole cell recordings in hypothalamic slices and in acutely dissociated neurons. Tetraethylammonium (TEA)-sensitive currents (TEA) evoked from -50 I/V were characterized by a large component that inactivated in 10-30 ms, and a smaller, persistent component that inactivated in 1-2 s. UV relations in dissociated neurons revealed TEA-subtracted currents with a slope and voltage dependency consistent with the presence of Kv3-like channels. In slices, tests with 0.01-0.7 mM TEA produced an IC50 of 200-300 nM for both fast and persistent currents. The fast transient current was similar to currents associated …

Fragmented State, Pluralist Society: How Liberal Institutions Promote Fear, Corey Robin Nov 2004

Fragmented State, Pluralist Society: How Liberal Institutions Promote Fear, Corey Robin

Missouri Law Review

Fear can be used as an instrument of political repression. The purpose for using it is to target those whose actions or ideas pose a threat to established arrangements of power and authority. Repression is not aimed at ensuring laws are followed but that the powerful are obeyed. There has been a strong consensus among experts about the type of political structure that arouses repressive fear: a centralized unified state monopolizing the means of coercion. However, this is an over-simplification. The state is not the only entity capable of wielding the repressive powers of fear.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus In Saudi Arabia, Abdulrahman A. Alrajhi Nov 2004

Human Immunodeficiency Virus In Saudi Arabia, Abdulrahman A. Alrajhi

Saudi Medical Journal

The human immunodeficiency virus HIV type 1 has evolved as one of the most important global infectious pathogens. Although the virus had initially emerged among certain high risk groups in developed countries, it quickly gained momentum in developing countries threatening most population groups. The first case of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was diagnosed in 1984. Twenty years later, by the end of 2003, 1509 patients have been reported to have acquired HIV 1. The majority of the early infected patients have acquired HIV 1 from blood product transfusion. Subsequently, the most prevalent mode of transmission …
