Ec04-467 There's No Excuse For Abuse: Raise Awareness About Domestic Violence (Part 4 In A Four Part Series), Kathy Bosch Jan 2004

Ec04-467 There's No Excuse For Abuse: Raise Awareness About Domestic Violence (Part 4 In A Four Part Series), Kathy Bosch

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

You can help teach the next generation that abuse or violence is not acceptable and is not to be tolerated in relationships. You can help teach by speaking up every time you see inappropriate or abusive behavior displayed against anyone. You can help teach by being a role model. This can be done by the way you show respect, communicate and interact with others.

Holding The Spymasters Accountable After 9/11: A Proposed Model For Cia Disclosure Requirements Under The Freedom Of Information Act, Martin E. Halstuk Jan 2004

Holding The Spymasters Accountable After 9/11: A Proposed Model For Cia Disclosure Requirements Under The Freedom Of Information Act, Martin E. Halstuk

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

For the last two decades, near-blanket CIA secrecy has gone largely unchecked, principally because of CIA v. Sims, a sweeping 1985 U.S. Supreme Court decision that exempted the Agency from virtually any disclosure requirements under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The uncurbed secrecy that the Court has sanctioned effectively blocks public and press efforts to evaluate CIA performance, thus making Agency accountability difficult, if not impossible. The well-publicized missteps and failures by the CIA in connection with the 9/11 terrorist attacks illustrate the follies of how excessive secrecy can conceal grave problems in Agency management. This article argues that …

Creation Of A Web Site For Linwood Gardens, A Ny State Historical Site In Pavilion, Ny, Carol Whitlock Jan 2004

Creation Of A Web Site For Linwood Gardens, A Ny State Historical Site In Pavilion, Ny, Carol Whitlock

Presentations and other scholarship

An historical site, Linwood Gardens, of great significance in the history of the American tree peony is located in Pavilion, NY, southwest of Rochester. Linwood Gardens belongs to the Gratwick family. William Gratwick worked for the first significant breeder of peonies and tree peonies in America, Arthur P. Saunders, who taught chemistry at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY. Saunders conducted his breeding experiments from about 1915 until his death in 1953. He created over 17,000 cultivars, including about 300 herbaceous peonies and 70 tree peonies. His tree peonies passed to William Gratwick who continued his breeding work with a friend, …

Developing An Example-Based Faculty Training Course, Anthony Trippe, Karen Vignare Jan 2004

Developing An Example-Based Faculty Training Course, Anthony Trippe, Karen Vignare

Presentations and other scholarship

The course detailed in this presentation is based upon the principle of placing the new faculty member in the role of a student. Typical students are motivated and they are adults. We tell students, up-front, the course is completely asynchronous and that they must be prepared to logon and participate in course activities five out of seven days every week (this simulates how they should manage their own future classrooms). Active participation counts for 30 to 40% of the credit earned for successful course completion.

Application Of Optical System Simulation Software In A Fiber Optic Telecommunications Program, Warren Koontz, Divya Mandloi Jan 2004

Application Of Optical System Simulation Software In A Fiber Optic Telecommunications Program, Warren Koontz, Divya Mandloi

Presentations and other scholarship

One of our objectives in the College of Applied Science and Technology at RIT is to offer our students some kind of “hands-on” experience along with theory. Providing a hands-on experience can be costly, however, especially in the field of optical communication. Although reasonably priced laboratory kits are available, the optical-electronic components in these kits are well below communication grade. Thus if we rely only on hardware, our students can only experiment with low power, low bit rate communication over a few kilometers of fiber. Computer simulation software offers an affordable alternative “hands-on” experience. With this software, a student can …

The Role Of Engineers In The Creation Of Engineering Drawings--Past, Present, And Future, Mario H. Castro-Cedeno Jan 2004

The Role Of Engineers In The Creation Of Engineering Drawings--Past, Present, And Future, Mario H. Castro-Cedeno

Presentations and other scholarship

A change in technology can redefine roles in society. Skills that were previously considered specialties and/or optional can become required for the general population. Some recent examples include typing and drafting. Neither skill was expected from engineers before the widespread availability of personal computers. Secretaries performed the overwhelming majority of typing, and drafting technicians were available in sufficient numbers to do the drafting. Both were considered necessary support personnel in all engineering organizations. Recently, however, the adoption of personal computers has made typing and drafting expected and necessary skills for every engineer. The reason is that the number of typists …

Teaching International Students In Their Home Country: Challenges And Approaches, Carol Whitlock, Stanley Bissell, Barbra Cerio-Iocco, David Crumb, Richard Lagiewski, Ed Steffens

Presentations and other scholarship

The American College of Management and Technology was established in Dubrovnik, Croatia in 1995 as a two-year program in hotel and travel leading to the AAS degree. The Croatian government wanted to develop their long coastline and historical cities to attract Western tourists, and sought an American University to educate the Croatians. A BS program was first offered in 1997. The cultural and physical challenges of teaching students in their home country are described, with emphasis on the challenges of teaching students for whom a culture of ‘helping” each other is the normal pattern. The challenge is to create and …

On The Structure Of Style Space For Documents, Rhys Jones, J. Fernando Naveda, Paul Roetling, Steven Harrington, Nishant Thakkar Jan 2004

On The Structure Of Style Space For Documents, Rhys Jones, J. Fernando Naveda, Paul Roetling, Steven Harrington, Nishant Thakkar

Presentations and other scholarship

We identify three aspects of style pertaining to documents. The first of these we call literary style and it includes the word and sentence constructions and choice of illustrations traditionally associated with authorship. The second we call informative style and it includes formatting and iconic choices that convey additional information such as the document's genre or corporate identity. The third aspect of style covers the degrees of freedom remaining for the author and is used to convey the author's intent. Literary style is the realm of academic scholarship and discourse and is beyond the scope of the present article. But …

A Case Based Approach To Teaching Spreadsheet And Database Applications, M. Pamela Neely Jan 2004

A Case Based Approach To Teaching Spreadsheet And Database Applications, M. Pamela Neely

Presentations and other scholarship

Although most schools offer and/or require a course in spreadsheet and database applications, the amount of meaningful learning derived from the class varies widely. The approach described in this paper involves a combination for demonstration and hands-on practice using two term-long cases to be used in an introductory course in spreadsheet and database applications. These cases, packaged together with slides emphasizing theory, hands-on quizzes and exams that foster critical thinking, can be used across the multiple sections that are taught to maintain consistency within the course and encourage faculty and students to take the course to a higher level. Evidence …

Industries and organizations struggle to remain viable and competitive. Toyota Motor Company developed Lean Thinking and its continuous incremental improvement of processes through relentless settings, businesses benefit from applying lean prinicples to their organizations. This paper presents an overview of lean methodologies with a focus on Value Stream Mapping (VSM). It discusses the benefits that might be realized when an IS organization supports lean methods and shows how VSM can play an important function in evaluating current and future Information System processes.
