The Effects Of A One-Tesla Magnet On Human Fibroblast Cell Growth, Ashley Chaplin
The Effects Of A One-Tesla Magnet On Human Fibroblast Cell Growth, Ashley Chaplin
Theses and Dissertations
The controversy regarding the ill effects of electromagnetic fields began in 1979 when Nancy Wertheimer and Ed Leeper claimed to have found a connection between childhood leukemia and power lines. In 1997, a group of researchers led by Martha Linet, M. D., attempted to provide evidence that there was no link between cancer and electromagnetic fields. The study showed that the risk of acute lymphoblastic leukemia did not escalate with increasing electromagnetic field levels in the children's homes. When compared to the Earth's static magnetic field of 0.5 Gauss, these fields were extremely small. Within the past decade, magnets have …

Tree-Like Continua And 2-To-1 Maps, Jo Heath, Van C. Nall
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
It is not known if there is a 2-to-1 map from a continuum onto a tree-like continuum. In fact, it is not known if there is a 2-to-1 map onto a hereditarily decomposable tree-like continuum. We show that the domain of such a map would have to contain an indecomposable continuum.

As part of this analysis, we organize current research evidence on the use of technology in medical education, distinguishing diverse variables involved in the process, like knowledge (declarative, procedural), learner characteristics, curricular …
Comparison Of Harvested And Nonharvested Painted Turtle Populations, Tony Gamble, Andrew M. Simons
Comparison Of Harvested And Nonharvested Painted Turtle Populations, Tony Gamble, Andrew M. Simons
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) are commercially harvested in large numbers in Minnesota for sale to biological supply companies and the pet trade. We investigated the possible effects of this harvest by comparing size, demography, and catch rates of painted turtles in 12 harvested and 10 nonharvested painted turtle populations in 2001 and 2002. We correlated turtle catch rates to harvest status, and harvested lakes had a lower catch-per-unit-effort than nonharvested lakes. Harvest had minimal effect on the size of turtles captured, and we found no significant differences in the count of male:female:juvenile turtles among lakes of different harvest …

Addressing Scientific Literacy Through Content Area Reading And Proces, Susan Cooper
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to interpret the experiences of secondary science teachers in Florida as they address the scientific literacy of their students through teaching content reading strategies and student inquiry skills. Knowledge of the successful integration of content reading and inquiry skills by experienced classroom teachers would be useful to many educators as they plan instruction to achieve challenging state and national standards for reading as well as science. The problem was investigated using grounded theory methodology. Open-ended questions were asked in three focus groups and six individual interviews that included teachers from various Florida school districts. …

The history of association soccer dates back to the 1800's, and all indications are that prospects for the female athlete was scarce in all sports. The researcher has arranged an environment where young females can train with males in a soccer setting that has all the necessary elements for the athletes to learn, improve and compete with their own gender as well as opposite gender. The female group has been noticeable underachievers in this sport and is not aware of their potential. The research methodology is ethnographic in nature and study could easily be related to a traditional way to …

Cost Effectiveness Of Treating The Metabolic Syndrome In The Uninsured In Montgomery County, Deepa Bangalore
Cost Effectiveness Of Treating The Metabolic Syndrome In The Uninsured In Montgomery County, Deepa Bangalore
Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
Treating the uninsured in cases of cardiovascular emergencies has demonstrated to be a large expense to the health care system, primarily borne by the society as they contribute to taxes/levies that support local hospitals for indigent care. Interventions to reduce the cardiovascular risk factors among the uninsured are expensive but have proven to be an effective alternative to the present situation, which is to treat them only in cases of emergencies. The metabolic syndrome (MS) poses a threat particularly to the uninsured population because of its asymptomatic nature. Detection and treatment of MS at its onset provides substantial clinical benefit …

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
This research project was carried out with three principle objectives. First, I provide a primer investigation of what social capital means and examine its possible relevance in the discipline of economics and I highlight some of the numerous conceptual debates surrounding the theory. Secondly, I shed light on the historical progression and time line for the implications of social capital. That is, where we were in the past, where we are at the current time and where we (as economists) are possibly heading with this into the future. Lastly, I highlight some of the major challenges in applying an empirical …

The Integration Of Connectionism And First-Order Knowledge Representation And Reasoning As A Challenge For Artificial Intelligence, Sebastian Bader, Steffen Holldobler, Pascal Hitzler
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
Intelligent systems based on first-order logic on the one hand, and on artificial neural networks (also called connectionist systems) on the other, differ substantially. It would be very desirable to combine the robust neural networking machinery with symbolic knowledge representation and reasoning paradigms like logic programming in such a way that the strengths of either paradigm will be retained. Current state-of-the-art research, however, fails by far to achieve this ultimate goal. As one of the main obstacles to be overcome we perceive the question how symbolic knowledge can be encoded by means of connectionist systems: Satisfactory answers to this will …
