The Impact Of Utilizing High-Fidelity Computer Simulation On Critical Thinking Abilities And Learning Outcomes In Undergraduate Nursing Students, Lori Schumacher Jan 2004

The Impact Of Utilizing High-Fidelity Computer Simulation On Critical Thinking Abilities And Learning Outcomes In Undergraduate Nursing Students, Lori Schumacher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Critical thinking abilities and learning outcomes are major components of nursing education. Initial critical thinking skills are often gained while the nursing student is learning the theoretical nursing principles in the classroom and is further enhanced in the clinical setting where learned knowledge is applied. A variety of instructional strategies are utilized to facilitate learning and promote critical thinking. Through the utilization of three complex and dynamic conceptual models, this study compared critical thinking abilities and learning outcomes of beginning baccalaureate undergraduate nursing students when three instructional strategies were used (classroom, simulation, and a combination of classroom and simulation).

Teaching Science Through Inquiry In K-5 Classrooms: Analysis Of Change In Practice, Joseph Sciulli Jan 2004

Teaching Science Through Inquiry In K-5 Classrooms: Analysis Of Change In Practice, Joseph Sciulli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the role professional development takes in fostering change in the pedagogical practices of K-5 classroom teachers, specifically in teaching science through inquiry. Michael Fullan's three elements essential for change: curriculum, instruction, and philosophy, were used as the lens through which to observe and analyze the impact of an intervention for changing teaching practices in K-5 classrooms. The intervention that assisted in creating an environment for change in behaviors was a morphed version of the Exploratorium's Institute for Inquiry, the ASSET Institute for Inquiry, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. During a three year period 208 …

The Zero Position Of The Forward-Backward Asymmetry In The B \Rightarrow K\Ell^+\Ell^- Decay With New Physics Effects, Altuğ Arda Jan 2004

The Zero Position Of The Forward-Backward Asymmetry In The B \Rightarrow K\Ell^+\Ell^- Decay With New Physics Effects, Altuğ Arda

Turkish Journal of Physics

Using the most general model-independent effective Hamiltonian comprising local four-Fermi operators (scalar, vector, and tensor operators), we study the sensitivity of the zero position of the lepton asymmetry to the new operators beyond the Standard Model (SM) in the B \rightarrow K\ell^+\ell^- decay. It is found that among all operators, only the scalar and tensor operators contribute to the forward-backward asymmetry, in which case the forward-backward asymmetry has a non-vanishing value.

Using Remote Sensing And Inclined Drilling To Locate High-Yield Water Wells In The Eastern Kentucky Coal Field, Robert E. Andrews, David R. Wunsch, James S. Dinger, Glenn A. Dunno

Report of Investigations--KGS

The Kentucky Geological Survey has developed a method using lineament analysis in conjunction with inclinced exploration boreholes to identify subsurface fractures in the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field. Wells are then drilled to intersect these fractures, with the hope that the wells will be high yielding (greater than 30 gal/min). Lineaments were selected from Landsat TM imagery, side-looking airborne radar (SLAR) imagery, and two enhanced Landsat TM images for over 6,400 square miles of eastern Kentucky. Lineaments were replotted on 7.5-minute topographic quadrangle maps, and field reconnaissance identified locations where lineaments correlated with straight-line topographic features and fracture zones. Subsquent application …

The Song Sparrow And The Child: Claims Of Science And Humanity, Joseph Vining Jan 2004

The Song Sparrow And The Child: Claims Of Science And Humanity, Joseph Vining

Books

For centuries public claims on behalf of science have been made about our nature and the nature of the world as a whole. Over the twentieth century such claims on behalf of science have grown deeper and stronger. More and more they are total claims, cosmological in the largest sense, and they have evoked opposition equally deep and strong.

There is the scientist in all of us. There is, too, the lawyer and law in all of us, which we realize the moment we serve as a witness or citizen juror. This book explores what the legal mind and ear …

Drift-Mobility Measurements And Mobility Edges In Disordered Silicons, Eric A. Schiff Jan 2004

Drift-Mobility Measurements And Mobility Edges In Disordered Silicons, Eric A. Schiff

Physics - All Scholarship

Published electron and hole drift-mobility measurements in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H), amorphous silicon alloys (a-SiGe:H and a-SiC:H), and microcrystalline silicon (μc-Si:H) are analysed in terms of the exponential bandtail trapping model. A three-parameter model was employed using an exponential bandtail width E, the band mobility μ0, and the attempt-toescape frequency ν. Low-temperature measurements indicate a value around μ0 = 1 cm2 V−1 s−1 for both the conduction and valence bands over the entire range of materials. High temperature-measurements for electrons in a-Si:H suggest a larger value of 7 cm2 V−1 s−1. These properties and those of the frequency ν are …

Attack-Resistant Location Estimation In Wireless Sensor Networks, Dongdang Liu, Peng Ning, An Liu, Cliff Wang, Wenliang Kevin Du Jan 2004

Attack-Resistant Location Estimation In Wireless Sensor Networks, Dongdang Liu, Peng Ning, An Liu, Cliff Wang, Wenliang Kevin Du

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Many sensor network applications require sensors’ locations to function correctly. Despite the recent advances, location discovery for sensor networks in hostile environments has been mostly overlooked. Most of the existing localization protocols for sensor networks are vulnerable in hostile environments. The security of location discovery can certainly be enhanced by authentication. However, the possible node compromises and the fact that location determination uses certain physical features (e.g., received signal strength) of radio signals make authentication not as effective as in traditional security applications. This paper presents two methods to tolerate malicious attacks against range-based location discovery in sensor networks. The …

Education Finance Reform In New York: Calculating The Cost Of A 'Sound Basic Education' In New York City, William Duncombe, John Yinger Jan 2004

Education Finance Reform In New York: Calculating The Cost Of A 'Sound Basic Education' In New York City, William Duncombe, John Yinger

Center for Policy Research

In June 2003 the New York State Court of Appeals altered the education-finance landscape with its ruling in Campaign for Fiscal Equity v. New York. This ruling called for “[r]eforms to the current system of financing school funding” designed to ensure “that every school in New York City would have the resources necessary for providing the opportunity for a sound basic education.” This ruling addressed a wide range of issues, but also declared that “the funding level necessary to provide City students with the opportunity for a sound basic education is an ascertainable starting point.” This policy brief addresses the …

Decision Fusion In A Wireless Sensor Network With A Large Number Of Sensors, Ruixin Niu, Michael Moore, Dale Klamer Jan 2004

Decision Fusion In A Wireless Sensor Network With A Large Number Of Sensors, Ruixin Niu, Michael Moore, Dale Klamer

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

For a wireless sensor network (WSN) with a large number of sensors, a decision fusion rule using the total number of detections reported by local sensors for hypothesis testing, is proposed and studied. Based on a signal attenuation model where the received signal power decays as the distance from the target increases, the system level detection performance, namely probabilities of detection and false alarms, are derived and calculated. Without the knowledge of local sensors' performances and at low signal to noise ratio (SNR), this fusion rule can still achieve very good system level detection performance if the number of sensors …

Design And Implementation Of A Collaboration Web-Services System, Wenjun Wu, Geoffrey C. Fox, Hasan Bulut, Ahmet Uyar, Harun Altay

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Conference control has been studied for years but most researches focus on homogenous collaboration. There is no conference control framework for integration of multiple collaboration systems such as H.323, SIP and AccessGrid. In this paper we present a web-services based scalable conference control framework for such a heterogeneous collaboration system. Based on this framework, we implemented a prototype system to verify and refine our framework. This system can support various conferencing endpoints and communities.

Sensor Fusion For Video Surveillance, Lauro Snidaro, Gian Luca Foresti, Ruixin Niu, Pramod K. Varshney

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

In this paper, a multisensor data fusion system for object tracking is presented. It is able to track in real-time multiple targets in outdoor environments. The system can take advantage of the redundant information coming from different sensors monitoring the same scene. The measurements (positions of the targets) obtained from the available sources are fused together to obtain a more accurate estimate. Data fusion is performed considering sensor reliability at every time instant. A confidence measure has been employed to weight sensor data in the fusion process. Compared to single camera systems, the adopted approach has produced more accurate and …
