Digital Mountain: From Granite Archive To Global Access, William A. Barrett, Luke A. D. Hutchison, Douglas J. Kennard, Heath E. Nielson, Dallan Quass

Faculty Publications

Large-scale, multi-terabyte digital libraries are becoming feasible due to decreasing costs of storage, CPU, and bandwidth. However, costs associated with preparing content for input into the library remain high due to the amount of human labor required. This paper describes the Digital Microfilm Pipeline – a sequence of image processing operations used to populate a large-scale digital library from a “mountain” of microfilm and reduce the human labor involved. Essential parts of the pipeline include algorithms for document zoning and labeling, consensus-based template creation, reversal of geometric transformations and Just-In-Time Browsing, an interactive technique for progressive access of image content …

A Case Study Of Senior Students' Perceptions Of Factors That Shape Aspirations In One Low-Income Rural Iowa High School, Louise Elizabeth Esveld Jan 2004

A Case Study Of Senior Students' Perceptions Of Factors That Shape Aspirations In One Low-Income Rural Iowa High School, Louise Elizabeth Esveld

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Rural Iowa high school graduates from districts enrolling fewer than 600 students are more likely than their more urban peers to be economically disadvantaged as measured by eligibility for free and reduced cost meals. They are also less likely to aspire to high levels of educational attainment. Over the last decade, the percentage of graduates from small, rural schools intending to pursue any postsecondary education or training has approached or exceeded the percentage in more urban districts. However, among rural graduates with postsecondary intentions, the ranks of those students planning to pursue a four-year degree or higher remain disproportionately thin. …

Making Science Teams Work, Roxanne Greitz Miller Jan 2004

Making Science Teams Work, Roxanne Greitz Miller

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Science teachers, likely have more experience with students working together than teachers in any other subject area due to teaming students for hands-on activities. While the importance of teamwork is emphasized in the National Science Education Standards, getting teams to actually work-meaning getting students to share equally in the academic assignments and to interact in a positive and productive manner-often eludes even the best of teachers. It has been the author's experience as a middle level science teacher that effective teaming requires careful planning, clear communication with students and parents, relevant motivational strategies, and arranging the classroom and activities to …

Making Thinking Visible: A Method To Encourage Science Writing In Upper Elementary Grades, Roxanne Greitz Miller, Robert C. Calfee

Education Faculty Articles and Research

In order to make a dramatic change in the way teachers approach science writing, the authors found it necessary to address both science instruction as a whole and the use of writing during various stages. To guide them in this endeavor and communicate a concrete idea of an ideal foundation for highly effective science writing to teachers, the authors turned to the CORE Model of Instruction. The CORE Model on instruction, which was originally developed as a representation of the manner in which reading and writing can be linked and reinforcing to each other, is described in this article. The …

Theory And History Of Social Indicators With Demonstration, David Edward Roemer

Master's Projects

This planning report outlines the history and evolution of social indicators into community indicators and examines their use in regional and urban planning. Second, this planning report is a study of the uses and types of indicators that have been, and are being, used for planning at the regional and community level. As such, this report also examines what it means for indicators to be appropriate” and describes how they may also be misused. Third, this report demonstrates the recreation of a Santa Clara County social indicator index based on a 1984 published report updated to the year 2000. The …

Generalised Long Duration Probable Maximum Precipitation (Pmp) Isohyetal Map For Peninsular Malaysia Jan 2004

Generalised Long Duration Probable Maximum Precipitation (Pmp) Isohyetal Map For Peninsular Malaysia

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Isohyetal maps were prepared to estimate Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP) for long duration storms in Peninsular Malaysia. Historical storms of 1, 3 and 5-day durations from 21 rainfall recording stations operated by Malaysian Meteorological Service (MMS) were identified and analysed to calculate the PMP vales. Maximum rainfall for 1, 3 and 5-day storms in the Peninsula were recorded as 809, 1272.9 and 1494 mm, respectively. The widely used and most reliable hydrometeorological method was used to derive and transpose the PMP values from the storm locations to all MMS stations in the Peninsula. Maximum transposed PMP for a particular duration …

Land Use/Land Cover Changes And Groundwater Potential Zoning In And Around Raniganj Coal Mining Area, Bardhaman District, West Bengal – A Gis And Remote Sensing Approach Jan 2004

Land Use/Land Cover Changes And Groundwater Potential Zoning In And Around Raniganj Coal Mining Area, Bardhaman District, West Bengal – A Gis And Remote Sensing Approach

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

The Raniganj area has a long history of coal mining starting from 1744. This has resulted in major change in land use pattern and high groundwater abstraction leading to drinking water crisis especially during the premonsoon period. In the present study, land use /land cover conversions in Raniganj area from 1972 to 1998 and groundwater potential zoning for future groundwater development has been delineated using the techniques of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS). The study indicates that land covered by vegetation and settlement has decreased at the expense of mining activity, which is reflected in the increase in …

The Frequency Distribution Of Quantization Error In Digitizers For Coherent Sampling, Sol Neeman Ph.D. Jan 2004

The Frequency Distribution Of Quantization Error In Digitizers For Coherent Sampling, Sol Neeman Ph.D.

Engineering Studies Faculty Publications and Creative Works

In this paper the frequency distribution of quantization error in coherent sampling of digitizers will be investigated. As the distribution of the quantization error affects the values of THD and SNR, it is relevant for a correct interpretation of THD and SNR of sine waves in coherent sampling. The distribution of the quantization error will be analyzed as a function of N, total number of samples and M, number of cycles in the sample set and it will be proved that for certain cases, the quantization error falls on odd harmonics only of the frequency of the sampled sine wave.

The Beta Gumbel Distribution, Saralees Nadarajah, Samuel Kotz Jan 2004

The Beta Gumbel Distribution, Saralees Nadarajah, Samuel Kotz

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

The Gumbel distribution is perhaps the most widely applied statistical distribution for problems in engineering. In this paper, we introduce a generalization—referred to as the beta Gumbel distribution—generated from the logit of a beta random variable. We provide a comprehensive treatment of the mathematical properties of this new distribution. We derive the analytical shapes of the corresponding probability density function and the hazard rate function and provide graphical illustrations. We calculate expressions for the nth moment and the asymptotic distribution of the extreme order statistics. We investigate the variation of the skewness and kurtosis measures. We also discuss estimation by …

Senior Thesis Work, Corey Jansen Jan 2004

Senior Thesis Work, Corey Jansen

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

In closing, it is important to remember, as stated earlier, that no one can prove exactly what it was that the authors of Genesis were trying to get across to us. It is valid to note, however, that the stories they were trying to get across were intended for and more properly understood by the people at that time and place. While they form the basis of many of our beliefs in Christianity, they weren't written with the realization that thousands of years later there would be great scientific discoveries that would teach us more about the world and about …

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

A School University Research Network (SURN) committee composed of current mathematics teachers, central office math supervisors, building administrators, mathematicians, and mathematics educators researched numerous sources regarding best practices in mathematics instruction. The resulting professional development rubric synthesizes their findings and can serve a professional development role by providing teachers and administrators with a tool to develop clarity and consensus on best mathematics instructional practices, and how these practices are implemented in the classroom. It is also being used as a tool for cooperating teachers in their supervision of student teachers and as a reflective method for self-evaluation.
