Model Reduction Of Large-Scale Systems Using Perturbed Frequency-Domain Balanced Structure, Abbas Hassan Zadegan Jan 2004

Model Reduction Of Large-Scale Systems Using Perturbed Frequency-Domain Balanced Structure, Abbas Hassan Zadegan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Model reduction of large-scale systems over a specified frequency range of operation is studied in this research and reported in this dissertation. Frequency-domain balanced structures with integration of singular perturbation are proposed for model reduction of large-scale continuous-time as well as discrete-time systems. This method is applied to both open-loop as well as closed-loop systems. It is shown that the response of reduced systems closely resemble that of full order systems within a specified frequency range of operation. Simulation experiments for the model reduction of several large-scale, continuous and discrete-time systems demonstrate the superiority of the proposed technique over the …

Peer Reputations As A Determinant Of Gender Differences In School Outcomes: Evidence For Domain-Specific Effects, Lisa Borga Gelman Jan 2004

Peer Reputations As A Determinant Of Gender Differences In School Outcomes: Evidence For Domain-Specific Effects, Lisa Borga Gelman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study explored the impact of peer reputations for academic ability and school-related affect upon fourth- through eighth-graders' academic outcomes. In light of the prevailing stereotypes regarding the differential academic abilities of girls and boys (favoring girls in English, and boys in math and science), it was hypothesized that peer reputations in English would be more predictive of outcomes for girls than for boys, while math and science reputations would be most predictive of boys' outcomes. Peer reputations were found to be predictive of school grades, but not of standardized test scores. Although ability reputations in most areas were predictive …

Peer Reputations And Gender Differences In Academic Self-Concept, Madhavi Menon Jan 2004

Peer Reputations And Gender Differences In Academic Self-Concept, Madhavi Menon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study explored the extent and nature of academic peer reputation upon children's academic self-concept. Peer and self-perceptions of academic ability and affect were assessed for the subject domains of English, math, and science in order to investigate the generality of peer reputation influences across academic subject areas, and determine the extent to which gender differences might be evident. Gender differences were hypothesized, and peer reputation was expected to have the most influence on academic self-concept in school domains viewed as gender-normative and thus central to self-concept. MR analyses provided some support for this gender-congruency hypothesis, as it was primarily …

Pruefer Domains, The Strong 2-Generator Property, And Integer-Valued Polynomials, Heather. Roth Jan 2004

Pruefer Domains, The Strong 2-Generator Property, And Integer-Valued Polynomials, Heather. Roth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

We present several results involving three concepts: Prufer domains, the strong 2-generator property, and integer-valued polynomials. An integral domain D is called a Prufer domain if every nonzero finitely generated ideal of D is invertible. When each 2-generated ideal of D has the property that one of its generators can be any arbitrary selected nonzero element of the ideal, we say D has the strong 2-generator property . We note that, if D has the strong 2-generator property, then D is a Prufer domain. If Q is the field of fractions of D, and E is a finite nonempty subset …

Performance Analysis Of K-Means Algorithm And Kohonen Networks, Afzal A. Syed Jan 2004

Performance Analysis Of K-Means Algorithm And Kohonen Networks, Afzal A. Syed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

K-means algorithm and Kohonen network possess self-organizing characteristics and are widely used in different fields currently. The factors that influence the behavior of K-means are the choice of initial cluster centers, number of cluster centers and the geometric properties of the input data. Kohonen networks have the ability of self-organization without any prior input about the number of clusters to be formed. This thesis looks into the performances of these algorithms and provides a unique way of combining them for better clustering. A series of benchmark problem sets are developed and run to obtain the performance analysis of the K-means …

Subgroups Of Bounded Abelian Groups, Carla. Petroro Jan 2004

Subgroups Of Bounded Abelian Groups, Carla. Petroro

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Birkhoff raised the question of how to determine "relative invariants of subgroups" of a given group. Let us consider pairs (A, B ) where B is a finite pn-bounded Abelian group and A is a subgroup of B. Maps between pairs (A, B) --> (A', B') are morphisms f : B --> B' such that f (A) --> A'. Classification of such pairs, up to isomorphism, is Birkhoff's famous problem. By the Krull-Remak-Schmidt theorem, an arbitrary pair (A, B) is a direct sum of indecomposable pairs, and the multiplicities of the indecomposables are determined uniquely. The purpose of this thesis …

Studies On Transreceive Diversity Schemes (Including "Polarization-Sense" Antenna Diversity) For Wireless Communication Systems, Wichean. Preedalumpabut Jan 2004

Studies On Transreceive Diversity Schemes (Including "Polarization-Sense" Antenna Diversity) For Wireless Communication Systems, Wichean. Preedalumpabut

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The research addressed in this study and deliberated in the dissertation is broadly tied to finding hybrid methods of diversity compatible for modern wireless applications. The hybrid strategy advocated thereof involves a combined use of space- (antenna and polarization), frequency-, and time-diversity schemes in a judicious manner so as to realize a desirable BER versus Eb/No performance across RF links that face multipath and other unwanted EM artifacts. The underlying reason for the hybrid scheme as above is to replace multiple-antenna based transreceive diversity. Such multiple antennas would otherwise require large base station real estate and may not be compatible …

Techniques For Combining Binary Classifiers: A Comparative Study In Network Intrusion Detection Systems, Hua. Lin Jan 2004

Techniques For Combining Binary Classifiers: A Comparative Study In Network Intrusion Detection Systems, Hua. Lin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

We discuss a set of indirect combining techniques for addressing multi-category classification problems that have been used in many domains, but not for intrusion detection systems. In contrast to the indirect combining techniques, direct techniques generally extend associated binary classifiers to handle multi-category classification problems. An indirect combining technique decomposes the original multi-category problem into, based on some criteria, multiple binary-category problems. We investigated two different approaches for building the binary classifiers. The results of the binary classifiers are then merged using a combining technique---three different combining techniques were studied. We implement some of the indirect combining techniques proposed in …

Threat Of School Choice And Changes In Public School Organizations, Jeanethe D. Thompson Jan 2004

Threat Of School Choice And Changes In Public School Organizations, Jeanethe D. Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study tested the assumption that faced with the threat of losing students via vouchers public school principals would make changes in their organizational practices to improve their schools and avoid this occurrence. Two variables were investigated: (a) the level of threat and (b) school organizational practices. Data were collected using a 55-item mail survey-questionnaire, structured to assess changes in school organizational practices perceived by teachers at the randomly selected schools. The School Organization Teacher Survey was field-tested twice to check reliability and validity. Cronbach alpha values were 0.88 and 0.93 for the pilots. The unit of analysis for this …

A Boundary Element Method For Thermo-Poroelasticity With Applications In Rock Mechanics, Qiang Zhang Jan 2004

A Boundary Element Method For Thermo-Poroelasticity With Applications In Rock Mechanics, Qiang Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

Coupled thermal and poromechanical processes play an important role in many geomechanics problems, such as borehole stability analysis and studies of initiation and propagation of hydraulic fractures. Thermal effects, as well as hydraulic effects, can greatly change the stresses and pore pressure fields around an underground opening. This is due to the fact that thermal loading induces a volumetric deformation because of thermal expansion/contraction of both the pore fluid and the rock solid. Volumetric expansion can result in significant pressurization of the pore fluid. In order to take into account the influence of temperature gradients on pore pressure and stresses, …

Predicting Dynamics Of Aggregate Loafing Behavior In Glaucous-Winged Gulls (Larus Glaucescens) At A Washington Colony, Shandelle M. Henson, James L. Hayward, Christina M. Burden, Clara J. Logan, Joseph G. Galusha

Faculty Publications

Seabirds move throughout the day in changing, patchy environments as they engage in various behaviors. We studied the diurnal abundance dynamics of Glaucous-winged Gulls (Larus glaucescens) in a habitat patch dedicated to loafing in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Washington. We constructed three differential equation models as alternative hypotheses and then used model selection techniques to choose the one that most accurately described the system. We validated the model on an independent data set, made a priori model predictions, and conducted a field test of the predictions. Clear dynamic patterns emerged in the abundance of loafing gulls, even though …

Cross sections for e+ p neutral current deep inelastic scattering have been measured at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 318 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 63.2 pb -1. The double-differential cross section, d2σ/ dxdQ2, is presented for 200 GeV2 < Q2 < 30 000 GeV2 and for 0.005 < x < 0.65. The single-differential cross sections dσ/dQ2, dσ/dx and dσ/dy are presented for Q2 > 200 GeV2. The effect of Z-boson-exchange is seen in dσ/dx measured for Q2 > 10 000 GeV2. The data presented here were combined with ZEUS e+ p neutral current data taken at √s = 300 GeV and the structure function F2em was extracted. All results agree well with the predictions of the Standard Model.

Inclusive Ks0Ks0 production in deep inelastic ep scattering at HERA has been studied with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 120 pb-1. Two states are observed at masses of 1537-8-9 MeV and 1726 ± 7 MeV, as well as an enhancement around 1300 MeV. The state at 1537 MeV is consistent with the well established f′2(1525). The state at 1726 MeV may be the glueball candidate f0(1710). However, it's width of 38 -14-20 MeV is narrower than 125 ± 10 MeV observed by previous experiments for the f0(1710). © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Modified Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy Logic Based Controllers For A Static Compensator In A Multimachine Power System, Salman Mohagheghi, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Takagi-Sugeno (TS) based fuzzy logic controllers have been designed for controlling a STATCOM in a multimachine power system. Such controllers do not need any prior knowledge of the plant to be controlled and can efficiently control a STATCOM during different disturbances in the network. Two different approaches for the TS fuzzy logic controller are proposed: a conventional TS fuzzy logic design and a modified TS fuzzy logic design based on shrinking span membership functions. Simulation results, along with a comparison of the conventional TS fuzzy logic controller performance with that of the proposed controller are presented.
