Socrates Metaphysician, William J. Prior
Socrates Metaphysician, William J. Prior
Philosophy
Following R. E. Allen I argue, against the view of Gregory Vlastos that the Socrates of Plato's early dialogues was exclusively a moral philosopher, that there is a metaphysics, an early version of the theory of Forms, in the Euthyphro and other early dialogues. I respond to several of Vlastos's objections to this view.

Development Of Three Phase Load Flow By Reusing Object Oriented Single Phase Load Flow, M. Abdel-Akher, K.M. Nor, Hazlie Mokhlis, A.H.A. Rashid
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
This paper presents the development of three phase load flow software by reusing an existing single phase load flow software component. The single phase load flow component was developed using Object Oriented and Component Based Development methodologies. The object oriented power system model of the single phase load flow component was established separately from the mathematical solution. The proposed three phase load flow is formulated based on symmetrical components theory, which involves a positive sequence load flow solution. Based on this relation, the single phase load flow component and its power system model can be reused in the development of …

“The history of the intermingling of human cultures is a history of trade—in objects like the narwhal’s tusk, in ideas, and in great narratives.”
—Barry Lopez, Arctic Dreams
The Woman Warrior (1976), Maxine Hong Kingston’s first book, made her famous. Her arrival coincided with, and helped to fuel, an awareness of literature by women and ethnic minorities, and a change in the literature studied in high-school and college classrooms. Today Kingston is one of the most frequently taught of living American authors. Her works are studied in courses in English, women’s studies, Asian studies, ethnic studies, postmodern literature, postcolonial literature, …

As I think about the question of becoming an administrator, all sorts of things run through my mind. Things such as, am I really cut out to do this job ? Do I have what it takes to be an administrator? Will I fail or will I succeed? Will I have the support of my staff? Will I be able to perform the paper-pencil tasks of an administrator? Will I be able to handle the school's budget ? I mean the questions just go on and on. So, as I look at the driving forces behind my decision to become …

Ake V. Oklahoma: The Right To Expert Assistance In A Post-Daubert, Post-Dna World, Paul C. Giannelli
Faculty Publications
Although securing the services of defense experts to examine evidence, to advise counsel, and to testify at trial is frequently critical in modern criminal litigation, it was not until 1985 that the United States Supreme Court in Ake v. Oklahoma, 470 U.S. 68 (1985), recognized, for the first time, a constitutional right to expert assistance. In a system in which an overwhelming majority of criminal defendants are indigent, Ake was a landmark case. Nevertheless, the Ake Court could not have anticipated how the advent of DNA evidence would revolutionize forensic science or how the Daubert trilogy would alter the judicial …

‘Lose In Vietnam, Bring Our Boys Home’, Robert N. Strassfeld

This Article examines the contest over dissent and loyalty during the Vietnam War. The Johnson and Nixon Administrations used an array of weapons to discourage or silence antiwar opposition. These included criminal prosecutions for "disloyal speech," a tool that they used with less frequency than some other administrations in times of war; prosecutions for other "crimes" that served as pretext for prosecuting disloyal speech; infiltration and harassment; and an attempt to characterize their critics as disloyal. The antiwar movement, in turn, responded to allegations that dissent equaled disloyalty by offering an alternative vision of loyalty and patriotism. In so doing, …
Supreme Court Voting Behavior: 2002 Term, Richard G. Wilkins, Scott Worthington, Sara Becker, Lorianne Updike
Supreme Court Voting Behavior: 2002 Term, Richard G. Wilkins, Scott Worthington, Sara Becker, Lorianne Updike
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
The results of the 2002 Study - as with the Study last Term - reveal continued polarization and voting instability on the United States Supreme Court. Only two categories of cases, Civil/State and Civil/Federal, were decided by predominantly unanimous opinions. Yet, while the Justices voted in fairly consistent "conservative" and "liberal" blocs, neither wing of the Court seems able to consistently garnish the "fifth vote" crucial to a definitive liberal or conservative trend. As a result, the Rehnquist Court may have lost its conservative momentum. The data suggest several possible explanations for this development. Justice O'Connor is again the Court's …

Design Of Geophysical Surveys In Transportation, Paul Michaels
Design Of Geophysical Surveys In Transportation, Paul Michaels
CGISS Publications and Presentations
Designing geophysical investigations for transportation related projects requires special attention to the constraints imposed by right-of-way, irregular topography, noise from traffic, and the need to avoid the interruption of traffic flow. A geophysical engineer needs to be prepared to consider these design issues that are not addressed in a standard procedure such as ASTM D-5777. The author presents design strategies that address these issues, and illustrates the concepts with case histories taken from bridge and highway projects. Beam steering, broadside shooting, and non-traditional designs that preserve alternative analysis options are presented. Transportation engineers who augment traditional subsurface geotechnical surveys with …

This optional excursion is 8 miles on paved road from the center of Ketchum (Main Street and Sun Valley Road traffic light), northeast through Sun Valley along the Trail Creek Road (fig. 1). A short walk of 10 minutes takes you to the crests of two moraines of very different ages. Here we view and discuss calcareous soils developed into the deposits, the pretty weathering-rinds developed on the sandstone cobbles, and ages of Pinedale and Bull Lake advances. During the Quaternary, an extensive system of mountain glaciers accumulated in the Pioneer and Boulder Mountains and flowed down valleys emanating from …

This 1-day field trip is a transect across the western Snake River Plain (fig. 1). The western plain is a continental- rift structure, 300 km long and 70 km wide. It is bounded and internally faulted by northwest-trending normal faults. The western Snake River Plain has a different orientation and structure than the eastern plain. The eastern plain is a curious downwarp related to magmatism and extension along the track of the Yellowstone hot spot (fig. 2). The faulted basin of the western plain began forming about 12 m.y. ago, and much of the relief was completed by 9 Ma. …

This 2-day trip will highlight recent fire and storm-related debris flows in the Payette River region, Holocene records of fires and fire-related sedimentation events preserved in alluvial fan stratigraphic sequences, and geomorphology and geology of alpine glaciations in the spectacular Sawtooth Mountains and Stanley Basin of central Idaho. Storm events and associated scour following recent fires in the South Fork Payette basin have exposed Holocene fire-related debris-flow deposits, flood sediments, and other alluvial fan-building deposits that yield insights into Holocene environmental change. Moraine characteristics and sediment cores from the southeastern Sawtooth Mountains and Stanley Basin provide evidence of late Pleistocene …

Approximating First-Order Logic Programs By Feedforward Networks, Pascal Hitzler
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
We want to apply Funahashi's theorem in order to approximate the TP operator for first-order (normal) logic programs P via 3-layer feedforward networks. I.e. we need to understand TP as a continuous function on the reals.
We will need to study some preliminaries from set-theoretic topology first result from [HS00, HHS0x], which extends results from [HKS99]. We close with some further considerations about the methods and results.

Information retrieval over semantic metadata has recently received a great amount of interest in both industry and academia. In particular, discovering complex and meaningful relationships among this data is becoming an active research topic. Just as ranking of documents is a critical component of today's search engines, the ranking of relationships will be essential in tomorrow's semantic analytics engines. Building upon our recent work on specifying these semantic relationships, which we refer to as Semantic Associations, we demonstrate a system where these associations are discovered among a large semantic metabase represented in RDF. Additionally we employ ranking techniques to provide …

Mathematical Disabilities In Elementary School Children, Teresa Oettinger Montani Ph.D.
Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education
A pilot study was conducted with the lowest performing sixth grade students in two classes in an urban environment. The nine students participating in this pilot study had been performing below grade level for at least two years despite the provision of supplemental services. With direct instruction, slower pace of instruction, mnemonics, math charts, manipulatives, and metacognitive strategies, gains were noted in the students’ performance. Pretest and posttest measure were administered and the results revealed modest gains in calculations and basic fraction knowledge with significant improvement noted with math fluency. The strategies used are known to both general and special …

Earthquake Source Parameters Determined By The Safod Pilot Hole Seismic Array, Kazutoshi Imanishi, William L. Ellsworth, Stephanie G. Prejean
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
We estimate the source parameters of #3 microearthquakes by jointly analyzing seismograms recorded by the 32-level, 3-component seismic array installed in the SAFOD Pilot Hole. We applied an inversion procedure to estimate spectral parameters for the omega-square model (spectral level and corner frequency) and Q to displacement amplitude spectra. Because we expect spectral parameters and Q to vary slowly with depth in the well, we impose a smoothness constraint on those parameters as a function of depth using a linear first-difference operator. This method correctly resolves corner frequency and Q, which leads to a more accurate estimation of source …

Residues And Tame Symbols On Toroidal Varieties, Ivan Soprunov
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
We introduce a new approach to the study of a system of algebraic equations in (C) whose Newton polytopes have sufficiently general relative positions. Our method is based on the theory of Parshin’s residues and tame symbols on toroidal varieties. It provides a uniform algebraic explanation of the recent result of Khovanskii on the product of the roots of such systems and the Gel’fond–Khovanskii result on the sum of the values of a Laurent polynomial over the roots of such systems, and extends them to the case of an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic.
Approximation For The Expectation Of A Function Of The Sample Mean, Rasul A. Khan
Approximation For The Expectation Of A Function Of The Sample Mean, Rasul A. Khan
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
Let X¯ n be the mean of a random sample of size n from a distribution with mean μ and variance σ2. Under some conditions it is shown that Ef(X¯ n ) = f(μ) + (σ2/2n) f″(μ) + O(n −2), and var(f(X¯ n )) = (σ2/n) (f′(μ))2 + O(n −2), where f is a continuous function with a suitable growth condition. This complements a result of Lehmann [(1991). Theory of Point Estimation. Wadsworth, California] and Cramér [(1946). Mathematical Methods of Statistics. Princeton University Press, Princeton, N.J.] for wider application. An illustrative example is given to show an application where the …

Written as a class-wide collective research project for a Political Communication course, this qualitative study explores young voters' perceptions of the meaning of voting. After conducting in-depth interviews with 66 eligible voters aged 18-25, the authors conducted a theme analysis. This study reveals that young people who tend to vote have a well-developed understanding of the ritual significance of voting which, in turn, contributes to their ability to recognize an instrumental effect. In contrast, those who do not vote tend to focus on the limited instrumental effect of voting, even as they argue that the effect of a wrong vote …
