Pre-Service Teacher Education In Australia : A Mapping Study Of Selection Processes, Course Structure And Content, And Accreditation Processes, Lawrence Ingvarson, Adrian Beavis, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Alison Elliott

Initial Teacher education

The main purpose of this study was to conduct a survey of Australian institutions that provide pre-service teacher education courses for primary and secondary teachers. The key elements of this mapping exercise included: Selection processes: The criteria and processes that teacher education institutions use to select students for courses. Course structure and content: The types of course content and structure that exist currently, including key components such as arrangements for the practicum and for ICT. Accreditation processes: The processes currently used, both internally and externally, for the accreditation and evaluation of teacher education courses. The survey instrument was sent to …

Supporting English Literacy And Numeracy Learning For Indigenous Students In The Early Years, Tracey Frigo, Matthew Corrigan, Isabelle Adams, Paul Hughes, Maria Stephens, Davina Woods Jan 2004

Supporting English Literacy And Numeracy Learning For Indigenous Students In The Early Years, Tracey Frigo, Matthew Corrigan, Isabelle Adams, Paul Hughes, Maria Stephens, Davina Woods

Indigenous Education Research

A longitudinal study conducted by ACER has been monitoring the growth in English literacy and numeracy achievement of a group of 152 Indigenous students in 13 schools through the early years of primary school. Indigenous students' developing English literacy and numeracy skills were assessed at five points over the first three years of school using tasks developed for the ACER Longitudinal Literacy and Numeracy Survey (LLANS). In general, for both the English literacy and for numeracy the achievement of the Indigenous students began at a similar level to that of the main LLANS sample but by the time of the …

Responses Of Captive Fish Crows (Corvus Ossifragus) To Acetaminophen Baits And Bait Stations For Brown Tree Snake (Boiga Irregularis) Control On Guam, Michael L. Avery, Eric A. Tillman, Peter J. Savarie Jan 2004

Responses Of Captive Fish Crows (Corvus Ossifragus) To Acetaminophen Baits And Bait Stations For Brown Tree Snake (Boiga Irregularis) Control On Guam, Michael L. Avery, Eric A. Tillman, Peter J. Savarie

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

One component of brown tree snake (Boiga irregularis) management on Guam is the use of a toxic bait that consists of acetaminophen tablets inserted into a dead neonatal mouse (DNM), which in turn is placed within a cylindrical polyvinyl chloride (PVC) bait station suspended above ground. Whereas this technique is effective in killing snakes, possible hazards to nontarget species, especially the Mariana crow (Corvus kubaryi), are of concern. We used the fish crow (C. ossifragus) as a surrogate for the Mariana crow to evaluate (1) oral toxicity of acetaminophen, (2) behavior of crows exposed to DNM containing acetaminophen tablets, and …

Feminist Voices In The Debate Over Single-Sex Schooling: Finding Common Ground, Rosemary C. Salomone Jan 2004

Feminist Voices In The Debate Over Single-Sex Schooling: Finding Common Ground, Rosemary C. Salomone

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

This article examines the deep divide within feminist ranks with an eye toward proposing a constructive and essential role for feminist understandings as single-sex schooling inches its way toward legal acceptability and into the mainstream of educational reform. In doing so, the forces that have shaped competing perspectives on women's equality are examined, especially disagreements over sameness and difference. In the end the article looks to the Court's decision in United States v. Virginia as a road map for feminists to follow in reaching common ground on the approach, despite seemingly profound ideological differences among them.

Solvent-Free Conversion Of Alpha-Naphthaldehyde To 1-Naphthoic Acid And 1-Naphthalenemethanol: Application Of The Cannizzaro Reaction, John J. Esteb, Keith M. Glogorich, Stacey A. O'Reilly Jan 2004

Solvent-Free Conversion Of Alpha-Naphthaldehyde To 1-Naphthoic Acid And 1-Naphthalenemethanol: Application Of The Cannizzaro Reaction, John J. Esteb, Keith M. Glogorich, Stacey A. O'Reilly

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The Cannizzaro reaction is routinely covered in organic textbooks, but owing to the shortage of suitable procedures for the undergraduate teaching laboratory, this reaction is seldom performed in a first-year organic chemistry class. In this experiment, powdered potassium hydroxide and α-naphthaldehyde are heated under solvent-free conditions to produce 1-naphthoic acid and 1-naphthalenemethanol in 86% and 79% yields, respectively. The solvent-free nature of this procedure greatly reduces the quantity of waste generated by students relative to the typical solvent-based method of preparation.
